My pulse quickened, and my hand reflexively reached for the blade clipped to my belt.
I looked around the room and froze, for this was not what I expected. He sat there, hunched over on the floor and leaning against the wall, moaning quietly and swallowing huge tears. His sobs were so quiet that a regular person was probably unable to hear him.
Panic-stricken, he tried to pull out a sharp wooden piece of furniture that had been stuck in his hand.
I don't think he even noticed me, because he didn't move when I removed my hand from the weapon and quickly crossed the room. Nor did he react when I knelt in front of him.
No, that's not it, he knew perfectly well that I was here, but his suffering and despair made him indifferent to what I would do with him.
I grunted quietly and only then did he raise his head so that I could see his face, which was not an easy task because some of his long dark hair was falling on his arms and face like a curtain. And goddess.... what a face it was.
Here I was kneeling before a man as beautiful as if he were a combination of a Norse God and an Angel.
He was powerful, he could easily measure 6.2 ft, his body was beautifully sculpted, and his skin was lightly bronzed by the sun.
He had several days of stubble that beautifully accentuated his chiseled jaw, slightly humped nose and the most beautiful deep emerald green eyes I have ever seen. In addition, the most confused eyes I've ever seen.
It took him a few seconds before he realized what had happened, and he pulled back a tad while emitting a feral growl from his throat.
Still, he looked as if he didn't have the strength to lash out at me now, so I decided that maybe I could allow myself to relax a little.
I breathed out and counted to three in my thoughts, not wanting to be overwhelmed by what I saw here today.
" oh sweetie, you hurt yourself like this, let me help you," I said quietly in the kindest tone I could muster, overwhelmed by this scene and emotions boiling inside me and him. Normally, I should address him your highness, but for now, I needed to gain his trust.
The man looked at me for a few moments, testing my intentions towards him. I let him see all of me, still looking into his gorgeous face and smiling gently. My heart was beating so violently as if it wanted to jump out of my chest.
Finally, he held out his shaking hand to me. He was bleeding badly, and definitely, he was in great pain. Nevertheless, he did not take his eyes off me for a second.
" Well, my love, now I will help you, but I don't want you to be angry when I do this. It will hurt, but I'm only doing it to help you" I said calmly, in the same tone as before.
I reached out my hand toward him and touched the area next to the wound. I must have been hallucinating because I could have sworn I felt a slight sparkle as soon as I made contact with his skin.
He hissed in pain and jerked his hand slightly which of course brought me back from a delicate shock of this feeling. Instinctively I tried to hold it in place and that was my mistake.
From his throat came a growl so loud and commanding that I shook involuntarily.
Damn it, I had forgotten that, despite his condition, he was still an Alpha and not just any Alpha. He was a king, the strongest and most dangerous one imaginable. In addition, he was really insane and unpredictable.
His green terrified gaze flashed with a golden gleam and another wild growl came from his mouth. Before I could look away, he launched himself in my direction and violently grabbed me by the throat, hurling me against the wall that was behind my back. I whined in pain and surprise, grabbing his hand and trying to pull it away from my neck, while at the same time unable to tear my gaze away from his incredulous stare. Oh Moon Goddess, just how much strength did this man have in him?
And most of all, I couldn't understand why my instinct for self-preservation didn't work, why I couldn't get the strength to neutralize him and save my skin. The only thing I could think of, given the situation, was that he was the Alpha of all Alphas, as it were. Surely my instincts were fully responsible for me not being able to stand up to him. After all, you need to know your position in the pack and when to submit. If it had been anyone else, he would have been hurling his jaw at the floor by now.
All I could muster was increasingly weakened from lack of oxygen moans and pleading attempts to push his hand away.
My pleading must have by some miracle brought him back to reality because he trembled and shook his head violently, which caused his gaze to return to normal. He sighed in surprise and loosened his grip on my throat, then, terrified by his action, he tried to say something but failed at that. The only thing that came from his mouth was a weak, quiet whimper.
Unexpectedly, the door to the chamber opened with a loud bang. I turned my gaze toward them and saw familiar figure. My brother, who was boiling with anger, saw the king's hand on my throat and reacted instantly.
" How dare you threaten the life of a member of my family!" he roared angrily, his eyes flashing with fury.
If only it had been any other wolf, he would have swept him away into ashes, but still, his instincts worked properly, and he knew he couldn't raise a hand against his Alpha.
Instead, he furiously rushed to the medicine casket standing by the entrance and pulled out a syringe with what might appear to be a sedative drug.
King's hand left my throat, and his resigned and frightened gaze shifted from me to Sebastian and back again. Coughing fiercely, I slid down the wall. Seeing Sebastian heading toward us with the medkit, I tried to get up and stop him, but still, due to hypoxia, I was too slow.
Sebastian forcibly jabbed the needle straight into his friend's neck and applied the medicine. I screamed in a hoarse voice, however, trying to stop him, but didn't manage to do so. Before my hand could grab the syringe, the king slumped to the ground with a quiet squeak.
Annoyed, I sprang to my feet and pushed him away from my patient. Some strange instinct told me to protect him at all costs. Even if this means standing against a member of my family, and my Alpha. The rational part of me knew that Seb was only protecting me, but this primal urge made me most eager to whip him here and now. It was also strange that, for the first time in my entire life, Selia was emitting a primal growl from somewhere deep inside my mind. While I might have disagreed with my brother, she had never really defied Areus- Sebastian's wolf.
"What did you do that for? He was only scared!" I yelled at him for absolutely no reason. Completely unable to process in my head that, after all, he did it wanting to save my life, which actually could have been in danger. To be honest, I myself was very surprised by my reaction because I had never reacted that way to Sebastian. Something was really wrong with me at that moment. Maybe the madness of the king was just affecting me for an unknown reason. After all, given my gift I have already happened to perceive and emit the emotions of those around me.
Sebastian raised an eyebrow, transferring his surprised gaze to me and gasping heavily.
" No young lady, you will not speak to me in such a tone. Do we understand each other?" He wheezed furiously, trying to control the anger raging inside him, and I shrugged visibly.
True, he was my big bear, but he was also the leader of my pack. The primal sense of obedience forced me to look away. Purple eyes of Areus flashed for a brief moment somewhere in my brother's eyes. It was clearly a warning destined for me and my wolf. Alpha only muttered something under his breath and moved me out of his way, intending to get to the king, but to my surprise and his, I again blocked his path, growling warningly.
"Selia, what the hell is wrong with you today?" I rebuked my wolf in my mind. However, to my surprise, she did not honor me with any answer. For a moment I even wanted to panic that this terrible curse had gotten me too, but that was not it. I felt that she continued to be in the depths of my soul, but for some reason, she was not ready to talk to me now. The only thing that I know was that she is now seriously pissed by Seb's behavior.
Sebastian, however, did not try to force his way through me, instead strangely patiently waiting for me to explain the situation to him.
" Don't you dare harm him in any way, Sebastian. There is no need at all to unload your nerves on him. He is suffering enough. I have never seen such a hurt and frightened creature," I warned him, straining almost every word through clenched teeth. Of course my behavior was ridiculous, but I needed to find a way to explain myself.
I knew, after all, that my brother was in no way responsible for this situation and had no way to do any better than he did. However, that didn't stop me from wanting to defend the werewolf lying on the ground from the entire world, even if the threat was my brother wanting to do the right thing for him
" If you dragged me into this mess, then we will now play it out on my terms, or I withdraw from it and forget that I ever agreed to be a part of it"
My Alpha only sighed heavily and shook his head in slight embarrassment " I don't know what you've been up to Moira, but let's let this pass considering what you've seen here today. I agree with these conditions under another condition. One that if you can't handle something you will come to me with it." He didn't wait for my answer, just wordlessly walked past me and, after counting to three, lifted the unconscious man off the ground. Then, as gently as he could, he dragged him toward the bed and laid him on it.
Worried, I rushed after him and helped him lay the unconscious man on the bed.
As soon as Sebastian moved away from him, I quickly rushed to get a first aid kit, a water dish, and a few other necessities. Our ruler was a werewolf, but I had no idea if, given his affliction, he was able to heal himself like other wolves.
At the same time, my brother summoned servants to clean up the mess in the room and bring in the new necessary furniture. They did this as quickly as they could, stumbling and bumping into each other in a panic. How much must they have seen so far if they were so terrified?
I didn't spend my time thinking about it though, instead, I carefully busied myself dressing his wounds, and Seb assisted me in this without a word, lifting his friend and rearranging him according to my instructions. In the end, the dream team was again functioning as it always did-flawlessly.
After some time, my patient had been properly cared for. I raised my gaze to Sebastian, and he simply stroked my head and nodded at the door. I responded with a look of understanding, with which I summarily escorted him to the exit. I knew he still had a ton of responsibilities and I shouldn't hold him back. I shifted my gaze to the man sleeping peacefully and allowed myself to admire him shamelessly. He was both as handsome as he was simply beautiful. With a slight smile, to my own surprise, I stroked his cheek almost tenderly and sat down by his side. Only now did I feel how tired I was of the situation? Of course, to my shame, I didn't even notice when I drifted off into a sweet dreamland.
