Prologue Pt. 1

~Age 8~ I wake up one morning to the sound of birds chirping and what sounds like paws running through the forest. Oh they must have just gotten back from a hunt. I thought to myself. My Grandpa -the current alpha- never woke me up for hunts, he says I'm “too young”, I mean he has a point, I'm 8 and wolves don't go on their first hunt until they are at least 16 so I still have 8 years left till my first hunt. I got up and went to my grandfather's pack house, “Grandpa?” I ask while rubbing sleep from my eyes. “Yes, what is it, Lexie?” He asked gruffly. He has yet to actually get any sleep. I can tell because his hair is still a mess. “Are you doing ok?” I ask shyly. Our pack is split into two groups: the north side and the south side. The north side stays up during the day while the south side stays up during the night. We're split into two groups because of; A) our size and B) Some of us do better at night than during the day and vice versa. “Yes, why wouldn't I be?” He asked. I can tell he's lying but I decide to drop it because I know he won't tell me no matter how many times I ask. People often think I'm older than I actually am because I'm always more worried about other people rather than myself “Your dad asked to see you.” He said, snapping me back to reality. He said it like it was completely normal but in reality my dad wanting to see me was the furthest thing from normal. I look away and at the ground irritated. Me and my dad never really got along, especially after he chose Nick -my brother- over me, “oh, what does he want this time?” I asked bitterly. It was obvious I didn't really care but I asked to humor him. Plus my dad only asks to see me when he needs or wants something. He gives me this, are you sure look, then sighs, “he wants to take you out for a run I told him it's-” “I'll go.” I say cutting him off. I'm not sure why I agreed to go. I mean it's not like I enjoy being around him but still. I can tell my answer confused him because of the look he's giving me but eventually he just sigh's and nods. He's not happy about my decision and I understand that but he's also not asking questions even though it's obvious he has them. I'm thankful that he's not asking them because I wouldn't have the answers to them. “ok, go get some sleep and I'll come wake you up in a bit.” He says with a slight sigh to his voice. I nodded, then turned and left. I went back to the Omega pack house and went to Lillian's room where I was staying with her and Connor, our other best friend. I was alpha born, Lillian was omega born, and Connor was beta born. we're all born into different ranks but we're best friends which is usually rare and while it does cause problems we find ways to make it work. I go in as quietly as possible so I don't wake them up and I go over to the pallet on the floor I made, “so where'd you go?” Lillian asked. I looked over and saw her sitting up on her elbow. “I went to go see my grandfather.” I whisper so I don't wake Connor up. “Well, what happened?” She asked. I could tell she was trying to be concerned while also being nosey but I didn't really mind. “He told me that my dad wants to take me out for a run.” I said flatly. “You're dad WHAT?” I heard Connor ask loudly. I couldn't tell if he was surprised, mad, or both. So much for him being asleep I guess. I sigh and look over at Connor, “I said, he wa-” Connor cuts me off “no I mean I heard that, I want to know why?” He said. You could hear the bitterness in his voice. None of us really liked my dad so he was always a sore subject for us especially for Connor though I never knew why. “I'm not sure, anyway-” I go to say something else only to be cut off a second time by Lillian's mom. “SHUT THE HELL UP AND GO TO BED, NOW!!!” her yell could probably shake the entire pack house. Me, Lillian, and Connor all laughed for a bit then Connor and Lillian turned and looked at me. “So what'd you say?” I heard Lillian ask quietly so we didn't get yelled at again. I look between the two of them then sigh, “I’ll tell you only if you promise not to yell OR get mad.” I knew those two things would be near impossible for those two especially when they find out that I agreed to go. I hear them sigh and then they both reluctantly nod in agreement. I didn't wanna see their reactions so I turned my head and looked down. “I told Grandpa I'd go.” I still have yet to look up at them, but I can still tell they're angry from the way the air stands on end. I wanna leave so bad but I know sooner or later I'm gonna have to face this so I'll do it now. “Let's just go to bed.” I hear Lillian strain out through gritted teeth. I give a sigh of relief and start to lay back down when I hear Lillian snap. “don't think this is over cuz it's not,” I sigh knowing she's right then I turn and lay down letting the darkness of sleep consume me. The south pack goes to bed at 8 AM and the north pack goes to bed at 8 PM, but if you're younger than 10 you go to bed two hours earlier than the other wolves. It's about 8 AM when my grandpa comes to get me. I hear the door to Lillian's room slowly creak open and I look over to see who it is. “Lexie, you awake?” I hear my grandpa whisper softly so he doesn't wake the other two up. “Yes.” I say before getting up and going to my grandpa. “Your dad is here.” He says quietly. All I do is nod and follow him back to his pack house. We get to my grandpa's room and I see my dad. He goes to hug me and I cross my arms and step back. I hear my dad sigh, “that's fair.” He says as he steps back from me. “What do you want dad, you never want to see me unless you want something from me or you need something, so what is it?” I ask him, completely avoiding eye contact. “I’ll explain later.” He turns to my grandpa, "hey dad, I'll bring her back before it gets too late." "You better not do anything stupid Jackson, I mean it, cause if you do I'll personally ban you from seeing her." I hear my grandpa say in a threatening tone. My dad looks over at my grandpa and nods, "I understand." My dad reaches for my hand but then stops thinking against it and just motions for me to follow him and I do. I see my dad shift into a black wolf that's 6 feet tall and he has golden eyes. All wolves have golden eyes when they shift. That's why when someone is part vampire it's obvious cuz it shows in a wolf's eyes. I follow my dad keeping up with him while still in my human form. I have black hair and blue eyes apparently like my mom though I don't remember much about her. I follow him to his pack house and wait outside for him to finish. While I'm waiting for him an older male beta comes over. "Hey your Lexie, right, Jackson's daughter though I'm guessing you don't see him as a dad huh." He says this and chuckles nervously I look up at him, "your Dominic right and yea I don't really see him that way." I sigh and look away. I feel him put his hand on my shoulder and I look up at him and smile softly. "I'm glad you remembered me and try to keep in mind if you ever need anyone to talk to while you're here, you always have me and my brother. You remember my brother right?" He asks softly. "I think so, his name is Niko, the guy with short blonde hair, right?" He chuckles and nods, "yes and while it might be true that his hair is short he hates when people point it out." Me and Dominic talk for a little longer than my dad comes out of the pack house. "You ready to go Lexie?" I hear my father ask from behind me. "Yes." He nods and shifts back into his wolf. His wolf's name is nightmare. He stops and looks at me waiting for me to shift and I do. My wolf is a pale blue but has white on the tips of certain patches of fur making it look like I have icicles stuck to my fur and my eyes are sectoral heterochromia. So both my eyes are half golden and have red but my grandpa teaches me how to hide the red since vampires aren't allowed in the pack (apparently it’s working and thank god too). My wolf's name is icicle. He looks at me then turns and runs into the forest. I follow after him in the forest, "so why'd you bring me out here. I know it wasn't just to see me." "Your right Lexie it's not I have a few things to talk to you about, first hunting, hunting is always-" "Dad stop, you know I'm not old enough to know about hunting and if Grandpa finds out we'll be in trouble." I said cutting him off. I wanted to know about hunting but I didn't want to get in trouble so I decided to try and stop dad from telling me though it was pointless. "I know, but I'm your dad and I don't care." I looked over at him in disbelief and I wanted to run and go back to the night pack but he was a lot faster and would've caught me so I just stayed quiet and listened. "Now as I was saying hunting is always better if done with your pack but hunting by yourself is just as fun because you don't always have to give out orders to your other pack mates." I looked down following him and as much as I didn't want to, I listened. He continued to tell me about hunting then went silent. I always thought that being around him and being silent would be so uncomfortable but it wasn't. It was actually quite nice. After a few beats of silence I looked over, "what was the other thing you wanted to talk about?" He looked at me and stopped and I followed suit and stopped as well. I saw him lay down but I stayed standing. "It's about vampires," he said flatly. I look at him confused since we are vampires or at least partly, but I decided not to say anything. "If you ever come across one or see one, run and don't look back there evil and won't hesitate to attack. Promise me that if you see one you'll run." I looked at him and nodded, "I promise, I'll run." It was a lie but I wouldn't tell him that. Me and my dad are on our way back to my grandpa's pack house. We get back and I shift back into a human or as much of a human as wolves get considering the whole wolf ears, tail and canine teeth aspect. "Gramps, I'm back." I hollered and I see him come out of his room. "Good now, go back to Lillian's, you'll be getting up in a few hours." He informed me, I didn't want to. I was still wide awake and icicle still wanting to run but I knew it'd be pointless so I went back to Lillian's. I look around and see Lillian asleep but I know better and Connor is now awake. I go over to my makeshift bed and lay down and hear a soft voice, "Lexie?" I look over and see Connor. "Yea what is it?" I whisper. "Did anything, well bad or weird happen?" I sigh. I don't wanna say what exactly happened, especially not at this time. "No not really but I'll talk more about it tomorrow, ok?" I see him nod and we both fall back to sleep. We woke up the next night at 8 PM sharp. I get woken up by Lillian shaking me awake. I yawn and sit up and look over at Lillian and Connor, "what is it?" I ask. I mean I already know why they want but still. "Tell us what happened completely." I can still hear the anger in her voice so I sigh and nod. "We didn't really talk about much, we mostly just went for a run like he said but he also warned me to stay away from vampires." "Vampires?" I heard Connor ask, it was more of a question than a statement. I nod, "yes vampires, I'm not sure why but still I told him I'd stay away from them plus I'd not like it'd matter, vampires aren't allowed in the pack anyway." I lied a bit but I didn't want them knowing I was scared of what would happen if they knew. They sigh and nod, "I can't speak for Connor but I'm still upset but whatever happened it doesn't matter let's just forget about this, plz." Me and Connor both nod in agreement and we leave the room and go for a run.
