The Truth Protocol

The desert station had become a fortress of determination. Axel stood at the window, watching the sun rise over the endless sands. Forty chapters. Forty battles. Forty moments where death had brushed against him and moved on. He was still standing. They were all still standing. But the cost had been immeasurable. "We need to talk," Vance said, his voice low. "I've been going through the data we recovered from the Citadel. There's something you need to see." Axel turned, his eyes tired. "What is it?" Vance pulled up a file on his laptop, his face pale. "It's a protocol. A contingency plan that the Covenant's leader put in place years ago. It's called the Truth Protocol." "The Truth Protocol?" Sable stepped forward, her expression wary. "What is it?" "It's a dead man's switch." Vance's voice was tight. "If the Covenant's leader is killed or captured, the protocol activates. It releases all of the Covenant's secrets—every operation, every asset, every piece of compromising information—to the public. It's designed to create chaos. To bring down governments, corporations, entire systems." Axel's blood ran cold. "If she dies, the world burns." "Exactly." Vance met his eyes. "We can't kill her. We can't capture her. If we do, the protocol triggers, and everything we've fought for is destroyed." "Then what do we do?" Troy asked, his voice hard. "We can't just let her keep running things." "We don't." Axel's voice was flat. "We find another way. We make her see that the protocol is a mistake. We make her want to stop it herself." "Make her?" Flint's voice was skeptical. "She's been running the Covenant for decades. She's not going to change her mind just because we ask nicely." "Then we don't ask." Axel's voice was hard. "We make her see that her way is wrong. We show her that there's another path." "And how exactly do we do that?" Nyla asked. Axel was silent for a moment. Then he said, "We find out why she started this. What made her become the person she is. And we use that to reach her." The team fell silent, the weight of his words pressing down on them. It was a long shot, a desperate gamble. But it was the only chance they had. "I have a lead," Dr. Vance said. "There's a file. A personal journal that the Covenant's leader kept. It's stored in a secure server in the city." Axel's eyes narrowed. "Where in the city?" "The financial district. The same building we hit before. But this time, we're not going in through the front door." "Then how do we get in?" "Through the roof. There's a helicopter pad. If we can get to it, we can access the server from there." The plan was set. They would infiltrate the building from the roof, access the server, and download the journal. It was risky, incredibly risky. But it was the only chance they had. "We move at dusk," Axel said. "Vance, you'll disable the security systems. Troy, you're on perimeter. Sable, you're with me. Nyla, you coordinate from the van." "What about me?" Jett asked. "You stay here with Mira and Sloan. If something goes wrong, you're our backup plan." Jett nodded, his face pale. "Understood." The night stretched on, cold and unforgiving. And somewhere in the shadows, the Covenant was waiting. Axel sat alone on the station's roof, staring at the stars. The sky was clear, the constellations bright and sharp. It was the kind of sky that made you feel like you could reach out and touch infinity. Mira joined him, her footsteps silent on the sand. "Can't sleep?" "Never can." She sat down beside him, her eyes fixed on the horizon. "I've seen something. A vision. It's not certain yet, but it's coming." "What is it?" "The journal. It's going to change everything." Mira's voice was soft. "It holds the key to understanding the Covenant's leader. And it's going to show you a path forward." Axel looked at her, his expression unreadable. "How do you know?" "I've seen it." Mira's eyes met his. "The future is not set. But there are possibilities. And this is one of them." Axel stared at her, his mind racing. The journal was their best hope. Their only hope. "Then we need to get it," he said. "Before it's too late." Mira nodded slowly. "I know. That's why I'm still here." The night stretched on, cold and unforgiving. And somewhere in the shadows, the Covenant was moving. The morning came gray and cold, the sky heavy with clouds. The team moved out, their movements silent and precise. The building rose from the financial district like a monument to power. It was the same building they'd hit before, but this time they were going in through the roof. Vance set up his equipment in a stolen van, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "Security systems are down. You've got a ten-minute window." Axel nodded. "Let's move." They approached the building, their movements silent and precise. The roof was accessible through a fire escape, the ladder leading up the side of the building. "This way," Sable said, leading them up the ladder. They reached the roof, the wind whipping around them. The helicopter pad was empty, the door to the stairwell sealed and secure. Axel entered the code, and the door slid open. The interior was dark, the walls lined with pipes and wires. "This way," Dr. Vance said, leading them through the maze. "The server room is on the top floor." They reached the server room, its door sealed and secure. Axel entered the code, and the door slid open. Inside was a room filled with servers, their lights blinking in the darkness. Dr. Vance moved to a console, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "I'm in the system," he said. "Downloading the journal now." The minutes stretched into an eternity, each one heavier than the last. The team watched the door, their weapons raised. "Almost done," Dr. Vance said. "Just a few more seconds." "We don't have seconds!" Troy shouted. "They're coming!" The operatives poured in, their weapons blazing. Axel fired back, dropping the first man, then the second. "Done!" Dr. Vance shouted. "I've got the journal. Let's get out!" They ran, the operatives right behind them. The building was swarming with guards, their numbers overwhelming. "We're not going to make it," Sable said, her voice strained. "We will," Axel said. "We have to." They burst through the exit, the van waiting. Vance floored the accelerator, the van lurching forward. They had escaped. For now. But the Covenant was still out there. And they wouldn't stop until they were dead. Axel looked at the team, his eyes hard. "We need to find a new place to hide. Somewhere they won't think to look." "I know a place," Sable said. "An old research station in the desert. It's been abandoned for years, but it's still operational. The Covenant doesn't know about it." "Take us there." The journey to the desert was long, the road winding through the mountains, the landscape growing more barren with each passing mile. The team was silent, each member lost in their own thoughts. The research station was a cluster of buildings on the edge of a vast desert. It was surrounded by sand and rock, the sun beating down on the plain. It looked like a ghost town. It probably was. "This is it," Sable said. "We'll be safe here." Axel nodded, relief flooding through him. They had found a refuge. A place to regroup. But as he looked at the team, he knew the fight was far from over. The Covenant was wounded, but it wasn't dead. And it would come for them. It was only a matter of time. "We need to read the journal," he said. "We need to understand who we're dealing with." Dr. Vance opened the file, his voice steady. "I've already started reading it. It's... it's not what I expected." "What do you mean?" "The Covenant's leader. Her name is Elena. She started the Covenant after her family was killed by a corrupt government. She wanted to create a world where that couldn't happen again. But somewhere along the way, she lost sight of that goal. She became the very thing she was fighting against." Axel's jaw tightened. "So she's not evil. She's broken." "Exactly." Dr. Vance's voice was soft. "And that means she can be reached. She can be saved." Axel was silent for a long moment. Then he said, "Then we need to find her. And we need to make her see what she's become." The night stretched on, cold and unforgiving. And somewhere in the shadows, the Covenant's leader was waiting. Axel looked at the stars, his mind racing. The game was far from over. It was only just beginning. But now they had a new weapon: the truth. And they were going to use it.
