The Extraction

The mountain wind cut through Axel's jacket like a knife, but he barely felt it. His eyes were fixed on the facility below, a sprawling complex of concrete and steel nestled in the valley. The Ascendancy's prison. Zayn was in there somewhere, waiting to be rescued. Or waiting to betray them. Either way, they had to try. "I count twelve guards on the perimeter," Troy said, his voice low through the earpiece. "Two more on the roof. They're rotating every fifteen minutes." "We can work with that," Axel replied. "Vance, how's the security system?" "Old school," Vance said. "They're using a legacy system, similar to what the Exordium used. I can disable it, but I need twenty minutes." "We don't have twenty minutes." Axel's voice was hard. "We go in now, before they change the rotation." "Risky," Sable said. "If we're caught before we get to Zayn, we're dead." "We're dead either way if we don't try." Axel looked at the team. "This is it. We go in quiet, we get Zayn, and we get out. No heroics. No casualties. Just the mission." The team nodded, their faces grim. They approached the facility under the cover of darkness, their movements silent and precise. The guards were focused on the perimeter, their attention fixed on the fence line. "Now," Axel said. They went over the fence, their feet landing softly on the ground. The facility was a maze of corridors and rooms, the walls lined with monitors and equipment. "This way," Sable said, leading them through the building. "The holding cells are on the second floor." They reached the second floor, the cells lining the walls. Zayn was in the last cell, his face pale, his eyes wide with fear. "You're here," he said, his voice trembling. "I knew you'd come." "We need to move," Axel said. "Fast." They unlocked the cell, pulling Zayn to his feet. He was weak, barely able to walk. Troy half-carried him, his movements surprisingly gentle. "We've got company," Vance said into his earpiece. "Two guards, coming around the corner." Axel fired, dropping the first guard. Sable took out the second, her shot precise and deadly. "Move!" Axel shouted. "We need to get out!" They ran, the guards right behind them. The facility was swarming with operatives, their numbers overwhelming. "Split up!" Axel shouted. "We'll meet at the rendezvous point!" They scattered, each member disappearing into the shadows. Axel ran, his lungs burning, his legs screaming. The guards were close, too close. He reached the exit, the night air cold against his face. The van was waiting, its engine running. Troy was there, Zayn slumped in the back. "Get in!" Troy shouted. "Now!" Axel jumped in, the van lurching forward. The guards were right behind them, their shots ringing out. "Go!" Axel shouted. "Go!" The van sped into the night, the facility disappearing in the distance. They had made it. They had rescued Zayn. But the fight was far from over. Zayn was weak, barely conscious. Tessa worked on him, her hands gentle, her voice soothing. "He's going to be okay," she said. "He just needs rest." Axel nodded, relief flooding through him. "We did it. We rescued him." "Now we need to get him to talk," Nyla said. "We need to know what he knows." The hours passed, each one heavier than the last. Zayn slept, his body healing, his mind resting. The team waited, their nerves frayed. And then Zayn woke up, his eyes wide with fear. "You need to get out of here," he said, his voice trembling. "The Ascendancy knows you're coming. They've been waiting for you." Axel's blood ran cold. "What do you mean?" "It was a trap. All of it." Zayn's voice was desperate. "Sloan was working for them. She led you here on purpose." The room fell silent, the weight of his words pressing down on them. They had been set up. The rescue mission was a trap. "We need to move," Axel said, his voice hard. "Now." They gathered their gear, moving fast. The Ascendancy was coming. They were surrounded. "We're not going to make it," Vance said, his voice strained. "We will," Axel said. "We have to." They ran, the compound collapsing around them. The guards were everywhere, their shots ringing out. Axel fired back, covering the team's retreat. "Get to the van! I'll hold them off!" "No!" Troy grabbed his arm. "We go together. That's the rule." Axel nodded, relief flooding through him. "Then let's go." They piled into the van, the doors slamming shut. The van roared to life, speeding into the night. They had escaped. For now. But the Ascendancy was still out there. And they wouldn't stop until they were dead. Axel looked at the team, his eyes hard. "We need to find a new place to hide. Somewhere they won't think to look." "I know a place," Sable said. "An old research station in the arctic. It was abandoned years ago, but it's still operational. The Ascendancy doesn't know about it." "The arctic?" Vance's voice was incredulous. "You want us to go to the arctic?" "It's the only place they won't find us." Sable's voice was flat. "We can regroup there. Plan our next move." Axel considered this. It was risky, incredibly risky. But it was also the best chance they had. "Let's do it," he said. "We leave at dawn." The journey to the arctic was long, the road winding through the mountains, the landscape growing more barren with each passing mile. The team was silent, each member lost in their own thoughts. The research station was a cluster of buildings on the edge of a frozen lake. It was surrounded by snow and ice, the wind howling across the plain. It looked like a ghost town. It probably was. "This is it," Sable said. "We'll be safe here." Axel nodded, relief flooding through him. They had found a refuge. A place to regroup. But as he looked at the team, he knew the fight was far from over. The Ascendancy was wounded, but it wasn't dead. And it would come for them. It was only a matter of time. "We need to plan our next move," he said. "We can't stay here forever." Zayn stepped forward, his voice steady. "I can help you. I know the Ascendancy's weaknesses. I can help you fight them." Axel looked at him, his expression unreadable. "Why should we trust you?" Zayn's eyes met his. "Because I've seen what they do. I've seen the people they hurt. I want to stop them as much as you do." Axel was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded. "Fine. We'll work together. But if you betray us, I'll kill you myself." "I wouldn't expect anything less." The night stretched on, cold and unforgiving. And somewhere in the shadows, the Ascendancy was moving. Axel sat alone on the station's roof, staring at the stars. The sky was clear, the constellations bright and sharp. It was the kind of sky that made you feel like you could reach out and touch infinity. Mira joined him, her footsteps silent on the snow. "Can't sleep?" "Never can." She sat down beside him, her eyes fixed on the horizon. "I've seen something. A vision. It's not certain yet, but it's coming." "What is it?" "The Ascendancy is going to make their move soon. They're going to unleash something terrible. Something that will change everything." Axel's blood ran cold. "What is it?" "I don't know. But it's coming." Mira's voice was soft. "And we need to be ready." Axel stared at her, his mind racing. The Ascendancy was planning something big. Something that could destroy everything they had fought for. "We need to stop them," he said. "Before it's too late." Mira nodded slowly. "I know. That's why I'm still here." The night stretched on, cold and unforgiving. And somewhere in the shadows, the Ascendancy was moving. Axel looked at the stars, his mind racing. The game was far from over. It was only just beginning. The next morning, Axel gathered the team in the station's main room. The air was thick with tension, each member waiting for his words. "We need to find out what the Ascendancy is planning," he said. "Before they make their move." "I have a lead," Zayn said. "There's a man. A Scholar named Vale. He's been working against the Ascendancy for years. If anyone knows what they're planning, it's him." Axel nodded. "Then we find him. Before it's too late." The search for Vale took them deep into the city, to a crumbling building on the outskirts of town. It was a relic of another era, its walls covered in graffiti, its windows shattered. "This is the last known location," Zayn said. "He's been hiding here for years." Axel approached the building, his weapon drawn. The door was locked, but Troy made short work of it, his shoulder slamming into the wood. The interior was a mess, papers and equipment scattered everywhere. It looked like someone had left in a hurry, abandoning everything. "He's been here," Axel said. "Recently." "How do you know?" Nyla asked. "The dust. It's disturbed." Axel pointed to the floor. "Someone was here within the last few days." Zayn moved to a desk, his hands shaking. He picked up a photograph, his face going pale. "He's alive," he said. "Vale is alive." Axel looked at the photograph. It showed a man in his late fifties, his face lined with age, his eyes tired. He was standing next to a younger woman, her face hidden in the shadows. "Who's that?" Axel asked. "I don't know. But she's important." Zayn's voice was tight. "He's protecting her. That's why he ran." "Then we need to find her." Axel's voice was hard. "She's the key to all of this." The search for Vale took them deeper into the city, following a trail of clues left by the Scholar. It was a puzzle, a game of cat and mouse. "She's heading north," Zayn said. "Toward the mountains." "Then we need to stop her," Axel said. "Before she disappears." They drove through the night, the road winding through the mountains. The sky was clear, the stars bright and sharp. It was the kind of night that made you feel like you were the only person in the world. Vale was staying at a small cabin at the edge of a town. It was the kind of place that didn't ask questions, the kind of place where people went to disappear. Axel approached the door, his weapon drawn. He knocked, three times, a pause, then two more. The door creaked open, revealing a man in his late fifties. He had silver hair and sharp eyes, a face lined with years of hard living. "Zayn," he said. "I was wondering when you'd show up." "You know why I'm here," Zayn said. "I know." Vale stepped back, pulling the door open. "Get inside. Fast." The cabin was warm, the air thick with the smell of wood smoke. Vale led them to a large room at the back of the building, filled with books and computers. "I know about the Ascendancy's plan," Vale said. "They're planning to unleash a weapon. A device that can manipulate the weather. They're going to use it to create chaos and panic." "Which city?" Axel asked. "London. They're going to hit London in two days." Axel's blood ran cold. London. Millions of people. The Ascendancy was going to destroy it. "We need to stop them," he said. "Before it's too late." "How?" Troy asked. "We don't even know where the weapon is." "I know where it is," Vale said. "It's being held in a facility in the mountains. But it's heavily guarded. You'll never get in." "Then we'll find a way." Axel's voice was hard. "We have to." The plan was set. They would infiltrate the facility, disable the weapon, and stop the Ascendancy's attack. It was risky, incredibly risky. But it was the only chance they had. "We move at dawn," Axel said. "Vance, you'll disable the security systems. Troy, you're on perimeter. Sable, you're with me. Nyla, you coordinate from the van." "What about me?" Jett asked. "You stay here with Mira and Sloan. If something goes wrong, you're our backup plan." Jett nodded, his face pale. "Understood." The night stretched on, cold and unforgiving. And somewhere in the shadows, the Ascendancy was preparing. Axel looked at the stars, his mind racing. The game was far from over. It was only just beginning.
