The First Strike

The arctic wind howled like a wounded animal, rattling the research station's reinforced windows. Axel had been staring at the satellite images for hours, his eyes burning, his mind churning. The Collective's operation was massive—a network of facilities stretching across three continents. But there was one location that stood out, a hub in the heart of Europe that served as their primary command center. "If we hit this, we cripple them," he said, his voice flat. "Take out their leadership, their coordination. Without this hub, they'll be in chaos." "That's a big if," Troy said. "That facility is a fortress. We'd be walking into a meat grinder." "Which is why we don't walk in." Axel turned to Vance. "You said you found a backdoor into their systems?" Vance nodded, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "The Collective's network is massive, but it has a vulnerability. They use a legacy system for their internal communications. It's old, outdated, and poorly secured. If I can get into that system, I can feed them false intelligence. Make them turn on each other." "Start with their leadership," Axel said. "Plant evidence that one of their inner circle is a traitor." "You want me to cause a civil war?" "I want to make them paranoid. They've been so careful, so hidden, that they've become suspicious of everyone. If we can feed that suspicion, they'll tear themselves apart." Sable stepped forward, her expression unreadable. "I know someone who can help. A woman named Vale. She's a Reclaimer, one of the faction leaders who's been fighting the Collective from the inside. She has access to their inner circle." Axel's eyes narrowed. "The same Vale who tried to betray us before?" "The same. But she's been playing a longer game than we realized. She's been working against the Collective for years, feeding them misinformation. If we can reach her, she can help us." "Or she's setting us up for another trap." "Maybe." Sable's voice was flat. "But she's also our best chance." Axel considered this. It was risky, incredibly risky. But it was also the best lead they had. "Set up the meeting," he said. "But we do it on our terms. Neutral ground. And we bring backup." The meeting was set for midnight, at an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of a small town. It was the kind of place where deals were made and lives were lost. The perfect setting for a woman like Vale. Axel arrived early, his team positioned around the warehouse. Troy was on the roof, his sniper rifle trained on the entrance. Sable was inside, hidden in the shadows. Axel stood in the center of the room, his weapon concealed, his senses sharp. Vale arrived exactly on time, her footsteps echoing in the empty space. She was tall and angular, with short-cropped hair and a scar running down her cheek. She looked like someone who had fought her way through hell and come out the other side. "Vance," she said, her voice flat. "I was wondering when you'd show up." "It's Axel," he corrected. "And you know why I'm here." Vale smiled, a thin and humorless smile. "The Collective. You've stumbled onto something much bigger than the Exordium, haven't you?" "I need to know what you know." "And what makes you think I'll tell you?" Axel's hand moved to his weapon. "Because if you don't, you'll die right here. The Collective will find you sooner or later. At least with us, you have a chance." Vale studied him for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly. "Fine. I'll tell you what I know. But I want protection. And I want a way out." "Deal." Vale began to speak, her voice low and urgent. "The Collective is planning something big. A coordinated attack on multiple cities. They're going to use a weapon—something they've been developing for years—to create chaos and panic." "What kind of weapon?" Axel asked. "I don't know exactly. But it's powerful enough to cause widespread destruction." Vale's voice was flat. "They're planning to use it in three days." Axel's blood ran cold. "Three days? That's not enough time." "It's all we have." Vale's eyes met his. "If we're going to stop them, we need to move now." The team gathered at the research station, the weight of the news pressing down on them. Three days. It was almost impossible. "We need to hit the hub," Axel said. "Take out their command center before they can launch the attack." "How?" Troy asked. "We're a handful of people against an army." "We use their own tactics against them." Axel turned to Vance. "How long until you can feed false intelligence into their system?" "Twelve hours. Maybe less." Vance's voice was tight. "But I need access to their network. I can't do it from here." "Then we get you access." Axel turned to Vale. "Can you get us inside the hub?" Vale nodded slowly. "I can. But it's going to be dangerous. The Collective has tightened security since the Exordium fell. They're expecting an attack." "Then we give them one." Axel's voice was hard. "We create a diversion. Draw their attention away from Vance while he does his work." The plan took shape over the next few hours. Vance would infiltrate the hub's network, planting false intelligence that would cause the Collective's leadership to turn on each other. The rest of the team would create a diversion, drawing the Collective's attention away from him. It was risky. It was reckless. It was the only chance they had. "We move at dawn," Axel said. "Vance, you'll be in the van, monitoring the system. Troy, Sable, and I will create the diversion. Nyla, you coordinate from the station." "What about me?" Jett asked. "You stay here with Mira and Sloan. If something goes wrong, you're our backup plan." Jett nodded, his face pale. "Understood." The hub was a massive complex in the heart of the city, its walls lined with cameras, its gates patrolled by armed men. It was the heart of the Collective's operations, the place where their leaders gathered to plan their attacks. Vance set up his equipment in a stolen van, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "I'm in the system. Give me a few minutes." Axel nodded. "Troy, Sable, let's go." They approached the hub, their weapons drawn. The guards were alert, their eyes scanning the perimeter. "Now," Axel said. They opened fire, drawing the guards' attention. The operatives poured out of the hub, their weapons blazing. The firefight was brutal, the sound of gunfire echoing through the streets. "Vance!" Axel shouted into his earpiece. "How much longer?" "Almost done," Vance replied. "Just a few more seconds." "We don't have seconds!" The operatives were everywhere, their numbers overwhelming. Axel fought on, his training taking over. Every shot found its target. Every movement was precise. "Done!" Vance shouted. "I'm in. I'm planting the false intelligence now." The operatives began to falter, their coordination breaking down. The false intelligence was working, creating chaos in the Collective's ranks. "We need to get out!" Sable shouted. "Now!" They retreated, firing blindly into the darkness. The operatives were disoriented, their communications compromised. They reached the van, the doors slamming shut. The van roared to life, speeding into the night. They had done it. They had planted the seeds of chaos. But the fight was far from over. The hours passed, each one heavier than the last. The team waited, their nerves frayed. The false intelligence was spreading through the Collective's network, causing confusion and paranoia. And then the first reports came in. The Collective's leadership was fracturing, factions turning on each other. The attack had been delayed. The weapon had been secured. "We did it," Vance said, his voice filled with disbelief. "We actually did it." But Axel knew better than to celebrate. The Collective was wounded, but it wasn't dead. And it would come for them. It was only a matter of time. "We need to keep moving," he said. "They'll regroup. They'll come for us." "Where do we go?" Nyla asked. "Back to the research station," Axel said. "We regroup there. Plan our next move." The journey back to the arctic was long, the road winding through the mountains. The team was silent, each member lost in their own thoughts. The research station was a welcome sight, its buildings rising from the snow. They had made it. They had survived. But as Axel looked at the team, he knew the fight was far from over. The Collective was weakened, but it wasn't defeated. And it would come for them. It was only a matter of time. "We need to plan our next move," he said. "We can't stay here forever." Jett stepped forward, his voice steady. "I can help you. I know the Collective's weaknesses. I can help you fight them." Axel looked at him, his expression unreadable. "Why should we trust you?" Jett's eyes met his. "Because I've seen what they do. I've seen the people they hurt. I want to stop them as much as you do." Axel was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded. "Fine. We'll work together. But if you betray us, I'll kill you myself." "I wouldn't expect anything less." The night stretched on, cold and unforgiving. And somewhere in the shadows, the Collective was regrouping. Axel sat alone on the station's roof, staring at the stars. The sky was clear, the constellations bright and sharp. It was the kind of sky that made you feel like you could reach out and touch infinity. Mira joined him, her footsteps silent on the snow. "Can't sleep?" "Never can." She sat down beside him, her eyes fixed on the horizon. "I've seen something. A vision. It's not certain yet, but it's coming." "What is it?" "The Collective isn't the only threat. There's another organization. Darker, more powerful. They've been operating in the shadows for years." Axel's blood ran cold. "Who are they?" "I don't know. But they're coming. And they're going to change everything." Axel stared at her, his mind racing. The Exordium. The Collective. Now something else. It never ended. "We need to be ready," he said. "Whatever's coming, we need to be prepared." Mira nodded slowly. "I know. That's why I'm still here." The night stretched on, cold and unforgiving. And somewhere in the shadows, the new enemy was moving. Axel looked at the stars, his mind racing. The game was far from over. It was only just beginning.
