The farmhouse kitchen smelled like coffee and desperation.
Axel had been staring at the same file for three hours, his eyes burning, his mind churning. The Variable. It was a ghost, a shadow, a secret buried so deep that even the Exordium's own records were fragmented and incomplete.
"Damon was looking for this," he said, his voice hoarse. "This is what got him killed."
Vance nodded, his fingers still flying across the keyboard. "The records are heavily redacted. But I've been able to piece together some fragments. The Variable is a person. Someone with unique abilities. The Exordium has been hiding them for years."
"What kind of abilities?" Nyla asked.
"I don't know exactly. But whatever it is, it's important enough that they've gone to extreme lengths to keep it secret." Vance pulled up a file. "There's a name here. Dr. Elias Vance. He was the lead researcher on the project."
Axel's blood ran cold. "Vance? Is he related to you?"
Vance's face went pale. "He's my father. I haven't seen him in years. I thought he was dead."
"Apparently not." Axel's voice was flat. "He's been working for the Exordium. Hiding the Variable."
Vance stared at the screen, his hands trembling. "He told me he was working on a research project. Something that would change the world. I never knew it was this."
"It doesn't matter now," Axel said. "What matters is finding the Variable. Before the Exordium does."
"How do we find someone who doesn't want to be found?" Troy asked.
"We find Dr. Vance," Axel said. "He's the key to all of this."
The search for Dr. Vance took them to the city, to a crumbling research facility on the outskirts of town. It was a relic of another era, its walls covered in graffiti, its windows shattered.
"This is the last known location," Vance said, his voice strained. "He was here six months ago."
"Then we need to find out where he went." Axel's voice was hard. "Spread out. Look for anything that might give us a lead."
They moved through the facility, their footsteps echoing in the empty corridors. The building was a maze of labs and offices, its walls lined with equipment and documents.
"Over here," Nyla called. "I found something."
They gathered around, looking at the documents spread out on a table. They were research notes, written in a cramped hand, filled with diagrams and equations.
"This is my father's handwriting," Vance said, his voice trembling. "He was working on something big. Something that could change everything."
"What is it?" Axel asked.
"I don't know. But it's connected to the Variable." Vance paused. "There's an address here. A location in the mountains. It might be where they're hiding the Variable."
Axel studied the address, his mind racing. "Then that's where we're going."
The drive to the mountains was long, the road winding through dense forest. The team was silent, each member lost in their own thoughts. The weight of the discovery pressed down on them, heavy and suffocating.
The location was a small cabin, hidden in a valley. It was surrounded by trees, its windows dark, its doors locked.
"This is it," Vance said. "This is where he was working."
Axel approached the cabin, his weapon drawn. The door was locked, but Troy made short work of it, his shoulder slamming into the wood.
The interior was a mess, papers and equipment scattered everywhere. It looked like someone had left in a hurry, abandoning everything.
"He's been here," Axel said. "Recently."
"How do you know?" Nyla asked.
"The dust. It's disturbed." Axel pointed to the floor. "Someone was here within the last few days."
Vance moved to a desk, his hands shaking. He picked up a photograph, his face going pale. "He's alive. My father is alive."
Axel looked at the photograph. It showed a man in his late fifties, his face lined with age, his eyes tired. He was standing next to a younger woman, her face hidden in the shadows.
"Who's that?" Axel asked.
"I don't know. But she's important." Vance's voice was tight. "He's protecting her. That's why he ran."
"Then we need to find her." Axel's voice was hard. "She's the key to all of this."
The search for the woman took them deeper into the mountains, following a trail of clues left by Dr. Vance. It was a puzzle, a game of cat and mouse.
"She's heading north," Vance said. "Toward the border."
"Canada?" Troy asked.
"Maybe. Or maybe she's trying to leave the country entirely."
"Then we need to stop her," Axel said. "Before she disappears."
They drove through the night, the road winding through the mountains. The sky was clear, the stars bright and sharp. It was the kind of night that made you feel like you were the only person in the world.
The woman was staying at a small motel at the edge of a town. It was the kind of place that didn't ask questions, the kind of place where people went to disappear.
Axel approached the door, his weapon drawn. He knocked, three times, a pause, then two more.
The door creaked open, revealing a woman in her early twenties. She had dark hair and nervous eyes, her face pale with fear.
"Who are you?" she asked, her voice trembling.
"My name is Axel Vance. I'm looking for Dr. Elias Vance. I think you know him."
The woman's eyes widened. "You're his son."
"No, I'm not. But I'm with his son." Axel stepped aside, revealing Vance. "He wants to talk to you."
The woman looked at Vance, her expression unreadable. "You're Elias's son. He told me about you."
Vance stepped forward, his voice soft. "Where is he? Is he okay?"
The woman's eyes filled with tears. "He's dead. They killed him. The Exordium found him and they killed him."
Vance's face went pale. "No. No, that can't be."
"It's true." The woman's voice was choked. "He was trying to protect me. He sacrificed himself so I could escape."
Axel stepped forward, his voice gentle. "Who are you? Why were they after you?"
The woman looked at him, her eyes filled with pain. "My name is Mira. I'm the Variable."
The room fell silent, the weight of her words pressing down on them. The Variable. The person they'd been searching for. She was standing right in front of them.
"You're the Variable," Vance said, his voice barely a whisper. "What does that mean?"
Mira's eyes met his. "I have a gift. A ability that the Exordium has been trying to exploit. I can see the future."
Axel's blood ran cold. "You can see the future?"
"In fragments. Flashes. It's not always clear." Mira's voice was shaking. "But it's real. I've seen things that have come true. The Exordium wants to use me to control the future. To make sure their plans succeed."
Axel looked at the team, his mind racing. It was impossible. It had to be impossible. But the evidence was there, staring them in the face.
"You've been hiding from them all this time," he said. "That's why your father was protecting you."
Mira nodded. "He knew what they would do to me. He tried to keep me safe. But they found us. They killed him."
Vance stepped forward, his face pale. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
Mira looked at him, her eyes filled with pain. "It's not your fault. It's theirs. They're the ones who did this."
Axel turned to the team, his voice hard. "We need to protect her. The Exordium will come for her. They won't stop until they have her."
"She can't stay here," Troy said. "It's too dangerous."
"I know." Axel's voice was grim. "We need to find a place to hide her. Somewhere they'll never think to look."
"I know a place," Sable said. "A safehouse in the desert. It's isolated, off the grid. No one will find her there."
Axel looked at her, his expression unreadable. "Can we trust you?"
Sable met his eyes. "You can."
The drive to the desert was long, the road stretching through endless miles of sand and rock. The team was silent, each member lost in their own thoughts.
The safehouse was a small compound, hidden in a canyon. It was surrounded by cliffs, its walls reinforced, its windows protected by bars.
"You'll be safe here," Sable said. "No one knows about this place."
Mira nodded, her face pale. "Thank you. For everything."
Axel looked at her, his voice soft. "We'll find a way to stop them. I promise."
Mira smiled, a faint and tired smile. "I know you will. I've seen it."
Axel's blood ran cold. "Seen what?"
Mira's eyes met his. "The future. It's not certain. There are many paths. But in one of them, you win." She paused. "You destroy the Exordium."
Axel stared at her, his mind racing. The weight of her words pressed down on him, heavy and suffocating.
"How?" he asked.
"Find the other one," Mira said. "The one who can help you. He's hiding in the city."
Axel's eyes narrowed. "Who?"
"I don't know his name. But you'll know him when you see him." Mira's voice was soft. "He has a scar on his face. And he's been waiting for you."
Axel turned to the team, his eyes hard. "We need to find this man. He's our only chance."
The night stretched on, cold and unforgiving.
And somewhere in the shadows, the Exordium was moving.
Axel looked at the stars, his mind racing. The game was far from over.
But for the first time in weeks, he felt a glimmer of hope.
