Chapter 2
Put us back in opposition to the Council and shut down this operation. Please spare me the shitshow. Micah, I don't want to stress out the pack again now that I've calmed them down. Our land has been returned to us at last.
And this time we're going to keep it. We have nothing to fear from Detective Marks. This time, we're prepared. You need a break anyway, so go on over and ask the girl next door out for coffee. s*x it up.
I rolled my eyes and muttered, "Yeah, werewolf gone wild with humans." After telling Micah, "She and I are in different worlds; we cannot do this," I excused myself from the workplace and went for a stroll.
I pushed the door open and felt the refreshing breeze on my face. As I looked over, I saw her leaning against the wall, eyes closed, outside once more. As I drew nearer, I realized that her beauty did not do her justice. Despite the urge to cross the street and start a chat, I continued on my way.
It was "nice to see you walking," Detective Marks hissed to Gerald Stone.
I glanced across at the detective and decided I didn't need his BS; I had enough on my mind as it was. What else could possibly go wrong with my day? How may I assist you, Marks?" I snarled. To paraphrase Ronald Reagan: "Last I heard, this is a free f*****g country."
As I walked down the street, Detective Marks peered at me. He seemed weird, and I couldn't tell if it was because it was getting dark or because I had caught him off guard by being out on the street when I usually kept inside except when we were on our land. I had no idea you'd be out and about like that. We don't know why you're just kind of... With his brow furrowed, he said
"Window shopping!" I snarled. "The sun is bad for vampires, or so I've heard," he said. "
Marks snapped, "The sun has set." "Won't you be closing up shop any time soon? I see you have some competition," Marks commented as he walked past me and observed the young woman closing her shop and getting into her car.
I looked at Marks and said, "Don't bother her; I'm sure she isn't going to be trouble." I turned and headed back to the cafe, saying, "Besides, I'm sure she won't be around long enough to make much money." Vampires are dangerous, so take caution.
Stone, take caution; we often hunt in packs, and people frequently disappear. He mumbled, "She does look tasty," before licking his lips. In that moment, I wanted to snap his neck, but I restrained myself.
I wanted to go back and murder him, but I realized it wouldn't be appropriate behavior. Whether or not he would harm the girl, I felt it necessary to have two people keep a close eye on her. I was completely unfamiliar with her.
"Well? I walked back into the business to see Micah asking me.
I was like, "Well, what?" I lost my cool.
That vampire—what did he want with us? Micah questioned me as we walked back to my office. I was in no mood to talk to him, but I knew he had to know what I was up to.
He threatened the girl across the street, so I sent some guards over to protect her.
"You're dispatching soldiers to safeguard a human being? Micah scowled at him. "For? He slammed his palms on the tabletop and screamed, "You didn't want to go and speak with the girl; we cannot spare our warriors to protect a human unless there is something more to this." "Explain to me, Gerald, why the f*ck you're guarding her."
"Because I f*****g want to," I snarled. "Don't talk smack; I'm the Alpha! Using an alpha tone, I roared.
Micah rolled his eyes and said, "Fine." As he left the office, he added, "I'll get Jake and Ryan here, and we'll figure out where she lives, and you'll make sure they're safe, too." I overheard his grumblings.
I relaxed in my chair. I was well aware of the risks involved in trying to keep her safe. I don't know what it was exactly, but I felt an overwhelming urge to defend her. I simply couldn't identify what it was. I knew I had to be in her company more often, so once her store opened, I planned to stop in and introduce myself. Perhaps that would provide me with the impetus to investigate the nature of my emotional state.
Even my wolf had completely lost it and had no explanation. When I first saw her, neither of us could explain the strong attraction we felt for one another.
After staring at her storefront for a while, I decided to walk back to the window and peek inside to see what she was selling without a sign.
When Gerald asked, "Where are you going?" This is Micah.
Before leaving the store, I suggested, "Let's go across the street, and then we should head to the packhouse before it gets too late."
I was taken aback by how nice and furnished the apartment looked when I crossed the street and walked up to the window.
"Tea? I uttered it aloud. She's a very intriguing person.
"She's a tea vendor?" Micah murmured as he approached from behind.
To which he replied, "Looks like it," I turned to face him. We need to assist her immediately.
"Gerald, how are we going to assist her?" he questioned, raising an eyebrow.
I told her, rolling my eyes, "Make sure she has the customers for one."
He crossed his arms and added, "But that's cheating, Gerald, and you know that." Let's close up shop and go home now. After saying, "You know the bloodsuckers are going to be coming out, and we don't want any more issues with them," he turned and walked away, leaving me in dismay.
Exactly what he said: I was unable to assist her in that manner. I had to let her find success on her own, but there was a catch if I wanted her to hire me. Since I was familiar with the locals and knew that some of them enjoyed tea, I might suggest that she add it to the menu and bring in more customers. Perhaps if she kept the shop well stocked, it might increase in popularity.
As I sprinted across the street to join up with Micah, I stole one last look into her shop before realizing that I wasn't quite ready to introduce myself to her. If Marks was serious about his threat, I needed to maintain my distance for the time being. I figured if he didn't avoid her, he'd have me introduce myself.
We locked up the shop and headed to the packhouse, where I'd be meeting the two warriors who would be assigned to her protection. They were to keep their distance from Marks and conceal their mission from him as much as possible.
There was a rap on my office door. I said, "Come in." Jack and Ryan walked in and took seats at the conference table.
"Micah told me you wanted to see me; do I have a special task?" Jack questioned.
I told them, "Yeah, there is a human girl I need you two to protect; the vampires are watching her because they think she's special." In the morning, when we open, the two of you are to join us and hang out until she goes home. You are to shadow her wherever she goes and guard her from harm.
With a "understood," Jack indicated his agreement. As in, "Is there anything else?"
With my back to them, I added, "You two will take shifts of twenty-four hours," so that one of them would always be here to keep me updated and the other would be with her. That is, until I learn more about her. So long, then.
Freda’s pov
When I got home, I collapsed. I hadn't anticipated how tiring setting up a shop would be. I was looking forward to a long soak in the tub and some quality pillow time. Even though I still had a few days until I opened my store, tomorrow was going to be even longer. I couldn't wait until the delivery guy brought my store sign. With that settled, I took the next necessary step toward realizing my goal.
When I got home, my cat, Mouse, was waiting for me when I unlocked the door. "Hey Mouse," I said, picking up the chubby cat. "I'm exhausted," I replied, kissing him. When I set him down to eat, I would tell him, "Time for mommy to take a bath and then off to bed," and then I would get in the shower.
While I was relaxing in the tub, Mouse walked in and sat on the toilet to observe me. For some reason, I really liked taking the hottest route possible for a human. I eventually got to bed and slept till the alarm went off.
I greeted the day with optimism, telling myself, "Today is going to be great." As soon as my sign arrived, I could complete the store's decor and place my door order. However, I was apprehensive since I knew I would be on my own if something went wrong. I'm crossing my fingers that today goes smoothly and lots of folks stop by to buy some tea.
I finished feeding Mouse and got ready to leave. I was looking forward to setting up business as soon as I saw my sign and went window shopping. Today would be a great day for my nerves. I was bursting with anticipation and joy. After a short trip, I jumped out and did a quick inspection of my store to make sure everything was in order. I knew I stood out like a sore thumb, but I didn't care. In all likelihood, the general public would accept me without question.
It wasn't long until the man with the placard knocked on my door, and when I opened it, he beamed at me.
A smile crossed his face as he apologized for his tardiness.
"Don't worry, I am happy that you made it in the short time that you did," I reassured her. I shrieked, "Once this baby is in place, I am going shopping to get the stuff I need, and this afternoon I am open." Seeing everything come together made me anxious, but I knew that by letting myself feel that way, I would eventually be able to let my guard down. Both fear and joy coexisted within me. Harold would be very pleased to see what I've done with this shop.
Smiling, he said, "I don't think I've seen anyone this happy in a long time; it's good to know someone can be." He then went to his truck to retrieve the ladder.
