My eyes flickered open. The room was too bright, too white, too sterile. I blinked against the sting of fluorescent lights. A soft beeping came from somewhere near my head. I turned slowly, and there they were. Dad and Mom, both seated beside the bed, staring at me like I’d come back from the dead. I tried to sit up. Plastic tubing tugged at the back of my hand...an IV drip. My arm felt heavy, sluggish. I let my head fall back against the pillow. Silence stretched between us. Dad’s face was carved from stone, jaw locked, eyes stormy, fighting every urge to speak. Mom looked like she’d been crying for hours...cheeks flushed, lips trembling, but no sound came out.
