Chapter 4

“Huh?” I had to ask in case my ears had misheard. He wanted to go out? With me? It didn't help that he still didn't turn to me, which, if you may know, was the definition of annoying. What the heck was wrong with this dude. Calm down Marie. Just three hundred and sixty four days to go and you'll be free from his frustrating behavior. Also you'll have money to take care of yourself. That calmed me a little. “A friend of mine has invited me to a dinner party and you'll be coming along.” He sounded like he was talking to his worker. What was his deal with bossing people around? Maybe because all his life, he'd probably been doing that. He was a CEO after all. Had been for a long time so he probably was used to only bossing people. Still, must he do that to me. “Why must I tag along?” I crossed my arms across my chest, wondering what would make him ask such. The last time I'd gone to a dinner party with him was a day after our wedding when I was still extremely excited to be his bride. I'd tried to create an excuse as to why we both had separate rooms and that he had gone to work on our wedding night. But apart from the party, he'd never taken me to any of his other parties again. I just assumed he was embarrassed of me as I was nothing close to being as high class as his other friends’ wives. “You must've heard the rumors.” He still didn't raise his head from the laptop. The frown on my forehead deepened. “So?” I wasn't even aware that he ever checked on the rumors. “People are doubting our relationship.” From his tone, I could make out that he didn't really care. This guy was weird. “And if I must remind you, I think they're right.” “But that shouldn't be happening,” his tone was so emotionless, I wondered how he felt being himself, “I don't want anything to affect my social status which could also have an effect on my company's stock.” “So?” “We're going to the party to calm the public's mind on what they think our relationship is heading to.” “I think it's only right to actually fuel their thoughts more as we're going to get a divorce in just a year time.” Why would he want them to think we're a perfect couple just for us to get a divorce. Did he reason at all? “I don't want a situation where, after the divorce, everyone's putting the blame on me.” His gaze was so focused on whatever he was doing, my patience started wavering. How I felt like slamming that laptop on his perfectly shaped head. Don't do it girl. The laptop costs way more than you'll ever earn in ten years. True. Very true. So instead, I let out a dry, irritated laugh. “So you want them to blame me?” “No, I want neither of us to take the blame on our divorce.” He sounded bored of the drifting of discussion. “So we're both going to the party.” “I don't understand how that'd make our divorce neither of us fault.” “Will you just do as I've said so I can do what I have and at the end neither of us would be at fault for our divorce.” He made it sound like that was the end of the conversation. “I think it's one of us fault that we'll be getting a divorce.” I muttered, huffing, but then realized he must've heard as he stopped typing. When he turned to me with drawn brows, my eyes widened in surprise. If I didn't get myself, we might end up getting a divorce on a bad note. “I guess I'll take my leave then.” Turning, I started towards the door. But weirdly enough, it felt like his gaze followed me as I moved, searing holes through my cloth. Obviously he wouldn't be staring at me for so long. I mean, why would he care to. Still, it felt like he didn't avert the gaze the entire time. When I reached the door, I dared to turned to clear my curiosity on if he would care to watch me. And truly, he actually was. Our gaze locked, catching me by surprise, especially since he didn't seem to want to break it. With a slightly increased heart rate, I turned the knob, breaking the gaze to open the door and rush out. What was that about? *** “So you're going to a rich people party all because of the public.” Charlotte dropped the bowl of chips on the table in front of us by her pool. She lived in a huge duplex as her parents were millionaires and she just had to be fortunate enough to be born as the only child of such wealth. Her spoiled self was expected since she'd been given all she wanted at a young age, because before her birth, her parents had suffered ten years of marriage with weeping, two failed IVFs, four miscarriages and a failed adoption process. So when Charlotte's mom became pregnant unexpectedly and gave birth smoothly, they'd treasured their child like she was the most priced possession. The both of us were the only ones in our group of four without a sibling. Caley was the elder of three girls while Cherry was the youngest with an elder brother. “But how does you going out help with your divorce whatever?” Caley asked, sounding like she found something suspicious in Henry's behavior. Well, that was expected since Caley always thought outside whatever box or whatever. My shoulders lifted in a shrug. “He's not understandable.” Charlotte took a seat on my left side of the round table, “I don't get why he needs a year till your divorce. Isn't it just a signature stuff?” “He didn't even want to sign the papers, he only did so after I threatened him with the court.” I lifted the orange juice from the table, taking a sip of it. Caley still had that suspicious look on as she took a sip of her apple juice. “Maybe he's going to end up with a huge loss after your divorce.” Charlotte, seeming oblivious of Caley's expression, said. “What's going on in that extremely smart head of yours, huh?” I finally asked Caley who blinked twice like I'd snapped her out of whatever she'd been thinking about. She shrugged. “I'm not certain so I don't think it's right to say it so as not to build something that'd be difficult to break.” Charlotte and I blinked in confusion. “Oh… okay.” As expected, Caley speaking in parables. Charlotte chuckled. “You're getting crazier the longer you stay single, I advise you to come with me to a club someday where we can meet hot dudes.” She just rolled her eyes, because we all knew there was no way Caley could be like Charlotte having s*x with any man that comes to view. "Whatever." “Why don't we talk about something else,” Charlotte suggested, “I mean, we came here to have a singles day together which means no one is married, alright?” We nodded, knowing it was really time to get our mind off Henry and his weird invitation to his friend's party.
