Chapter 7

As expected, the party had been the definition of boring since I arrived— a glance at the table clock— ten minutes ago. Seriously? A groan threatened to leave my throat. It had just been ten minutes? Ten minutes that felt like ten years. Oh my, this would certainly be the most boring day of my life. It didn't help that Henry was nowhere to be found. He'd just left with some group of people and since then, hadn't come back. And that was five minutes ago. Five whole minutes. It's not like his presence made things any better, but at least there'd be someone I knew in this huge place. I internally huffed, because, why bring someone out and just leave them by themself. “Excuse me,” I stopped a waiter walking with a tray of glasses of wine. He stretched the tray, then left after I'd taken a glass. At least I could keep myself busy with something sweet rather than thinking about how bitter my life was. Lifting the glass to my lips, I took a sip of the sweet wine, the taste causing my taste buds to jump. All the while wondering what to do to avoid further boredom. A female invited herself to the seat opposite me, offering a polite smile before dropping her red purse that matched her dress on the table. Just like every other wife here, she had an aura of wealth permeating around her. A crease tugged at my forehead, because certainly she'd be aware who I was. And from all I knew, none of them ever stared in my direction, not to talk of offering polite smiles or sitting near me. So what was wrong with this one? “Hey, I'm Nora.” Her smile showed two white teeth. Still, her introduction didn't explain why she was here. “Marie.” “Yeah, I know.” Of course she did. I mean, who didn't know the wife of Henry. “How ‘bout your husband?” She asked in a slightly whispered tone that made my brows furrow. “Uh…” the stare I hurled her way should probably be enough to let her know how weird the conversation was. That is, if it could be called a conversation. She cleared her throat, leaning forward and dropping her tone even further. “I'm actually a huge fan, you know.” I had to resist the urge to— you know what, I couldn't. An eye roll replied her, then I took a sip of the wine, wondering when Henry would get me out of here. Her expression shifted in a scowl, as she leaned back. “Seriously?” That made me turn back to her with as much disinterest a human could have. Would she leave already? “You've begun growing wings, haven't you?” She scoffed. “‘Dis probably ‘cause you're the wife of someone so great, right?” “Uh?” Was she kidding me right now? I sincerely had no time for this s**t. “All your pride will fall once you two get a divorce.” She sneered, seeming angry-proud of herself, while I sat in confusion. How did this conversation take this turn? She seemed to have misinterpreted my confusion to meaning the divorce situation, because she added, “it's all over social media. Everyone knows you two aren't as picture perfect as you'd want us to think you are.” Okay, now she was pushing buttons. I didn't care about her saying the truth about her divorce, but the fact she was talking to me in such a manner. “Listen bitc—” “What do you think you're doing?” Henry's voice called from behind. It made Nora's eyes widened, as she jumped to her feet. “M-Mr Smith.” I had to resist another urge to roll my eyes, then stood up after her to turn to Henry. Although he'd sounded mad, his posture was still ever-composed. How did he do it? “Why did you talk to my wife in that manner?” He asked the trembling Nora, in a spine shivering tone. A crowd had gathered, while some even filmed the scene. “I'm s-sorry, but it just seemed like you two might get a divorce soon and—” His brows pulled together as though truly confused. “Divorce?” Wow, he was a great actor. Even I would believe him with his expression and tone. “Where do you all get your rumors from?” He rolled his eyes, grabbing my arm to pull me towards me. That had come as a surprise, but knowing we were in public, I didn't yank it from his grip. Instead, offered a small smile, then said in my most feigned genuine tone, “thank you.” He held my gaze, “there's no way I can ever stop loving this female.” Although I was sure they weren't true, the words still seized my breath, increasing my heart pace. Especially when he brushed a few strands behind my ear, leaning closer to press his lips against mine. What the— My breath hitched… but my eyes closed to kiss him back. It was the sweetest kiss ever, and the second kiss I'd have with him. The first was our wedding kiss, and now… His lips moved with mine in ways that sent snakes dancing round my spine. That cologne of his drew me even nearer, especially with him exploring my mouth in undescribable ways. Wait, what was going on? What the heck was I doing kissing him? I pulled apart, our faces inches apart, gaze locked like true lovers. What just happened?
