5. Pretence

Marthas p.o.v Cold gaze, Intense eyes, was what Hayley was giving me while she sipped her coffee. I pretended not to see what she was doing while I ate my breakfast calmly. I knew very well how much Sonny loved his so-called, beloved mother. Last night he defended her like crazy and for the first time treated me roughly. I was so shocked over his actions because since I met him, he had never yelled at me or treated me badly. Having him push me to the ground was a first and who was to blame?. Hayley.  It was my first time meeting her yesterday, and I was hoping that today was the last time I was ever seeing her around. "Morning" Sonny greeted cheerfully when he walked into the dining room. I kept quiet and took a bite from my bread. "Morning son, how was your night" Hayley answered politely.   He sat next to me and smiled. "It was okay." He whispered then glanced at me. I tensed and took another bite from my bread. What?. Was he expecting me to greet him or something?. Was he so stupid not to realize how much I hated him?. He sighed softly then picked up an empty tea cup. I frowned when his words rang in my head. "Now just to make myself clear again.  if you ever get me this upset Martha. You will never, ever see your son and that's a promise. You know that I can play the good guy and bad guy when I want to." The thought of never seeing my son really scared me a lot. I needed to be on my best behavior with him. "Morning honey," I whispered under my breath. When a second went by in silence I sighed in relief. "Thank God he heard nothing." I said to myself in silence. How lame was I to say such words? "Morning to you too darling." He answered startling me. The bread piece slipped from my hand and fell to the ground. He glanced at it then looked at me and smirked proudly. "After breakfast, can you drop me off at the airport?" Hayley asked getting out attention. "No mother, you aren't going anywhere." He answered seriously. "I have to meet someone important there. You know, to discuss about the upcoming design." She said seriously. He put the cup down and leaned against the chair lazily. "Are you lying to me mother?" He asked seriously. "No, I'm really telling you the truth son." She answered. "Fine. I'll ask one of the guards outside to drive you there." He said softly. "No, I will drive her there." I said calmly surprising them. They both looked at me like I was some kind of ghost. "Really, are you so eager for me to leave?" Hayley asked annoyed. Yes I was. But that wasn't why I had suggested to take her there. I wanted to mend things with her so Sonny could easily give in and bring me my son. "No, It's because I want to apologize for yesterday's behavior. Mother, please forgive me. I was way out of my mind and very disrespectful. I couldn't sleep much because I spent hours going through my horrible behavior." I answered. She stood up and pointed a finger at me. "Did Sonny make you do this?" She asked loudly. "No, he didn't. Mother please listen, I really want to talk to you. if it's possible, spend the night here. I want to truly welcome you into our home." I said sadly.    She kept quiet then nodded after a minute. "Sure, why not?. Seeing that I have nothing to lose." She said with a smile. I stood up and cleared my throat. "Give me five minutes to grab my car keys. I'll find you outside." I said then rushed upstairs to clean my teeth.  I glanced at myself in the mirror then Forced a smile across my face after cleaning my teeth. I came out of the bathroom and grabbed the car keys on the head board quickly. I had an hour to drop her off and check a few things at my office. I was about to go downstairs when I saw Sonny standing between the stairs staring at me coldly. I slowly went to him and stood in front. "What are you planning Martha?" He asked seriously. I folded my hands and looked him in the eyes. What I was planning was simple. I was going to win his trust and have my son in my arms. Once I was sure that it really was him. I was going to disappear from his life and never, ever see him again. "Nothing. I just want to drop my mother-in-law at the airport then pass through my small office to check how the business is going." I answered. "Okay. I'll play dumb and believe you. But if you dare do something stupid to my mother. You will regret it." He said then walked past me. "Jerk." I spat then rushed downstairs and went outside where I found Hayley standing next to my car. "Sorry I'm late," I said while unlocking the door for her. She frowned then got in without a word. I closed the door and walked around to the driver's seat and got in. Calm yourself and try not to talk to her. I reminded myself while I started the car and drove off. It was so uncomfortable to be all alone with her. "Do you love my son?" She asked softly surprising me. I wanted to laugh at her and call her names but I couldn't. For some reason, her question was making me feel nervous and my heart was beating so loudly. "I.....well I......."  "You don't?" She asked. I glanced at her then bite my lower lip. "He married me out of pity not love." I whispered sadly then frowned deeply when she laughed softly. "I know my son well dear. So believe me when I tell you, he can never settle down with anyone he isn't in love with." She said confusing me. She really was the one who had no idea what kind of son she had it seemed. He was capable of anything and much worse.
