Mom takes a full minute of silence to process what I just blurted out, and I can’t blame her. She just found out that I found my mate and got rejected by him in the same sentence, and it would have put a band-aid on the matter if I didn’t speak up, but that solution would have been temporary and leading to more hurt for both of us sooner rather than later.
Finally, after what feels like a silent funeral for my loss, Mom breathes out a deep sigh. We are still standing by the door, so she leads me to the closest couch in the living room so we can sit. She holds me with eyes where I get mine from and of all things I expect her to say next, she asks.
