Marco
If only I had the brains to ask this girl who she was before inviting her into my family home, this
could have gone so bad; I mean it still might, she could have gone anywhere while I was asleep, did
she even know who I was? Although she looks as shocked as I feel.
“This is bad, this is so bad Yvonne!” I didn’t know Henry Collins had a daughter and if I did I certainly
wouldn’t have slept with her.
“You don’t think I know that? How was I suppose to know you are THAT Marco Russo?!” As angry as
I am her voice is so soothing, its like my body is being taken over by butterflies, I am not falling in
love at a time like this.
“You’re telling me your dad doesn’t have photos of all of us Russo's on his wall just waiting to cross
us out, or a dart board with all of our faces on it or at least warned you about us?” I know that its a
bit out there but I am stressed.
“Are you really so self absorbed that you think all my dad thinks about is Russo’s? God you are just
how people describe you, self centred and arrogant. I was totally falling for the tall dark and
mysterious act you had going but really you are just a worried little boy. Can you just take me
home?”
“So you have heard of me?” I can feel a smirk cross my lips and I don’t even stop it even after
watching Yvonne roll her baby blue eyes. “Yes, I will take you home but we have to swing past a
pharmacy first, you have to get plan b, I am definitely not letting anything slip. Sleeping with you is
one thing that could get me killed, getting you pregnant opens a whole other can of worms.”
“Well I am not going into a pharmacy to get plan B, what if someone sees me? And they definitely
won’t sell it you.” We stare at each other for a moment before a thought pops into my head.
“Why not? If I just say you are my girlfriend and you asked me to why wouldn't they sell me it?”
Yvonne lets out a laugh, a proper belly holding tear streaming laugh. “what?”
“You understand how shady that would look? A young man asking for a plan b for a girl who isn’t
with him who wont come into the store with him, looking as pale and shaken as you look right now.
They would think you had done something you shouldn’t have and the cops would be on you before
you could say over 18” okay so she’s making sense but what else can I do. I need to make sure she
takes it but she wont buy it for herself, I need someone to go in and buy me it but who… and then it
hits me.
I pound up the hallway, the sooner this is over with the better I need this girl out of my house before
dad catches wind because he will know exactly who that is. I knock at my little sister Marnies door
and wait for an answer but there isn’t one so I crack open the door and whisper in “Marnie? Marnie”
still nothing. I walk up to her beside and realise she is still asleep. My sister is a very pretty girl, not
that I would admit that to her but she is, she has beautiful emerald green diamonds where her eyes
should be, they could make you do whatever she wanted and she knew it, that's why dad always did
anything she wanted. Her skin was a shade of golden olive, almost like she was in the sun 24 hours a
day rather than never seeing the sun because she spends her entire life in clubs with her hooligan
friends. She still has a freckled face, most people grow out of it but hers seemed to have gotten more freckled as time went on. The older she gets the more she looks like mom and its hard to
watch, our mother was a saint and I know Marnie misses her, we all do. My heart starts to fill with
sadness but I am not dealing with that today. I push the thoughts of mom down deep.
“Marnie get up.” I start to shake her out of her comatose state “Marnie! Get out of bed!” I pull back
her duvet so she is hit with the a breeze of cold air “Why are you in bed?”
“I’m up!” she begins to swat at my hands and I take a step back. “What do you... Marco, what do
you want?”
“I need some help. I need you to go buy me a... have you been drinking? You stink!” I can smell the
alcohol from here she must have been a state last night.
“Yes, and I’m very hungover, what do you want? Make it quick please.”
“I thought you told Uncle Vinny you were going to stop drinking? You know how much you’re
stressing dad out right?”
“How do you even know what me and Vin talk about? Marco, you haven't spoken to me in about a
week and before that it was to shout at me for driving my own car because I was alone. What the
hell are you doing in my room and what do you want? If it's to lecture me about my own decisions,
can you shut the door on the way out because I really don’t care.”
“Do you have to be a little b***h 24/7? It was to see if you would go get me the morning after pill? I
have a girl over from last night and she wanted me to go get it for her, but I went, and I tried, and
they wouldn’t sell me it.” Please say yes…
“So, you want me to go to the pharmacy and get you a morning after pill because your f**k buddy is
too embarrassed to?” I know how mas this sounds “why should I? what's in it for me?” I have to
offer her something good for this
“I'll stop at taco bell, or McDonalds or chick-fil-a. Anything you want; I just need this girl out and
she's not leaving unless she gets the pill.” I really am desperate but I don’t want her to know just
how much I need this from her. She cant know how bad I f****d up this time.
“Fine but you’re paying. Now leave so I can go for a shower since I stink so bad.”
I feel a smile creep across my face, I am so glad she said yes. I know I haven't been the best brother
to her but I am so glad she is willing to help me “Thanks Marn I will pull the car around. Don’t be too
long”
“Okay get dressed, my sister is going to go in and get it.” I say opening the door to my bed room,
where is she? Where could she have gone?
I start to search around my bedroom to see if she had left anything, maybe she got a taxi home or a
ride. The bed sheets are still crumpled in a pile in the middle of the bed, I will need to change the
sheets. Maybe even get checked to be sure she was clean, of course we were safe but how safe can
you really be? I decide to give the duvet a shake to at least make my room look a bit less of a dump
as I shake the sheet her phone catapults across the room onto the floor. I really hope its not broken.
Just as I go to pick it up the bedroom door opens, I look up from my crouched position on the floor
slowly taking in the person standing in front of me. Brown leather Derbies, Beige suit trousers, crisp
white shirt, could only mean one thing “Hey dad!” could he have picked a worse time?
“Hey Marco I have a job I need you to do today and I want us to have dinner later. Me you and your
train wreck of a sister.” he looked down at me still crouched on the floor “What are you doing down
there?” I quickly jumped to my feet and smoothed my shirt out with my hands.
“Dropped my phone” I cleared my throat “So what's the job and can it wait about an hour I have
some things to do.”
Dad shook his head slightly “Um yeah it can wait, no later than 6 though, it needs done today”
I nodded hoping Yvonne doesn’t appear soon, I need to get him out “And dinner tonight what time
and why together, is there a birthday I missed?” I can feel myself getting uneasy I hope he doesn't
see it, last thing he needs is to know Yvonne Collins is in our house he would kill me on the spot for
letting that assholes daughter into our home.
“No no, no birthdays missed, I will explain it all later I have something big to discuss with you and
Marnie. Be there say about 8?”
“Okay dad, I will be there and ill make sure to bring the drunken princess with me, I will come and
get the details for the job when I’m back, like I said about an hour.” He nodded and closed the door
shortly after Yvonne opened the door to my en-suit.
“Hey I was just getting cleaned up I heard your dad come in and didn’t want him to see me so I
waited. Is that my phone?” She pointed to my hand.
“Yeah! I found it in the duvet and it fell so I was making sure it hadn’t broke. Thank you for waiting,
are you ready to go?”
Yvonne nodded and followed me to the car. I opened the door to my brand new Jeep Grand
Cherokee and hopped in.
“So my sister doesn’t know who you are and I plan on keeping it that way, she doesn’t need to know.
She wouldn’t take it too well knowing she was doing a favour for a Collins, especially since you’re
dad…” I got cut off with Marns opening the passenger side door.
“Oh ... I guess I'll take the back.” She slammed the door and climbed in the back “So much for won’t
leave” even though it was muttered I still heard her and regardless of who this girls family is I do still
kinda like her. The drive to the store was pretty quiet I could see Marnie sulking in the back and
throwing daggers at Yvonne, I tried to warn her in the mirror with a growl but she was ignoring me.
We pulled up to the pharmacy and I handed her my wallet “Just the pill Marn” she is a nightmare for
taking money out of my wallet that’s why I don’t leave it laying around any more “Don't go spending
what's not yours.” she slid out of the car, I didn’t even bother turning around, I gave her a stern look
threw the mirror to be met with an eye roll. “Marnie-Grace, I mean it!”
She walks with almost a skip, like she is still 5 years old. I do miss her, its just hard to be close to her
when she looks so much like mom.
“My dad didn’t mean it you know, he didn’t mean for it to go the way it did” I started to see red,
how could she try and defend that rat.
“Do not try and defend your jackass father to me when MY family is the one doing you the favour.
You’re lucky I was in a good mood when you told me who you were otherwise this could have gone
very differently” I don’t know what happened, I just snapped, maybe it was thinking about mom,
maybe it was Yvonne trying to defend that piece of s**t but I just saw red. I could feel Yvonne start to tense up “I just mean…” I slammed the steering wheel, hard.
“ENOUGH! We are not doing this! This was a mistake and I’m sorry about that but do NOT sit in my
car and defend that man!” I saw Yvonne start to tear up and a wave of guilt flooded my body, its not
her fault she was born into that family. “I’m sorry, please don’t cry.” she stiffened up as I touched
her arm trying to comfort her, why did I say that. It wasn't a mistake, I actually really enjoyed her
company. Before I could say anything else a pill box and my wallet were tossed on my lap. Startled I
turn to Marnie who was now a pack of twizzlers and bag of chips up.
“I thought I told you not to spend what’s not yours?” I seen her roll her eyes and I could not do the
argument today “Thanks for going in for us Marnie, it means a lot” I could tell from her wide eyes
that she was shocked.
“Yeah thank” Yvonne practically whispered.
“Yeah no problem, so, Taco Bell?” I was relived that she didn’t say anything else I couldn’t deal with
any conversations.
We decided to drop Yvonne off home before going for food, I could tell she wasn’t comfortable with
being in a car with me right now. I pulled into her street, there were rows and rows of beautiful
white Victorian houses, most of which had amazing sports cars, jeeps and collectable cars “Where
should I drop you Yvonne?” I shot her a quick glance and could tell she had tuned out. I spoke a little
louder “Yvonne?” that got her attention “Where should I drop you?”
She pointed to a house near the bottom of the street, it had a tall steel fence, 2 black SUV’s and 1
bright pink mini, I guess that’s Yvonne's car. “Thank you for dropping me home Marco” She leaned in
to kiss me and I don’t know why I did it but I turned my cheek to her, I really don’t know why
because I wanted to kiss her but I froze. Her face twisted into the most disappointed frown
imaginable and I felt sick.
“I’ll call you okay?” She didn’t even answer she just closed the door. I hope I see her again. Before I
could think about how mad I was at myself Marnie climbed over the seat.
“HEY! Watch the leather don’t get your filthy shoes on the interior.” I was alittle mad but not really,
she really did do me a solid today.
“I really am grateful Marnie; I wouldn’t have asked if it wasn’t important.”
“I know, but why was it so important, who even is she? You’ve never regretted them THAT much
that you had to get me involved.”
“She’s no one, it doesn’t matter” I cant let her know “Just leave it”
“I think I should get to know who I am buying pills for don’t you? It can’t be that bad. Just tell me, its
not like I will tell anyone.”
I cant believe I’m doing this, she is going to hate me forever “You promise, dad can’t know” She
nodded eagerly holding her pinky up in promise “okay, well... she is Henry Collins daughter.”
She was clearly thinking very hard about that name, it was almost as if I could see the penny drop
when she figured it out “Henry Collins as in dads biggest rival? Collins as in the guy who shot dad 20
years ago? Collins who got...”
“Yes... that Collins. Please don’t tell dad. I am begging you; he will kill me and not just figuratively. He
will literally kill me.” I should not have told her, I have never seen such a look of disgust in her face,
especially not aimed at me. I should have just told her she was no one. What have I done?
“Can you just take me home? I can’t even look at you right now” And with that we drove home in
silence. No music no chatting, complete silence, I really hope she doesn’t tell dad. He will be livid. He
might actually kill me...
