The low, wet growl vibrated through the damp earth, traveling straight up Arian’s boots. He froze instantly. The thick trees blocked the moonlight, but the faint purple glow from the broken sky gave him just enough vision. A massive Shadow Hound stepped out from behind a rotting pine log.
It wasn't a normal forest hound. The leaking purple rain had already warped its body. Patches of its dark fur were burned away, exposing raw, glowing purple muscle underneath. Thick saliva dripped from its jaws, sizzling quietly as it hit the wet dead leaves. The beast locked its glowing red eyes firmly on Arian.
Arian didn't step back. The heavy black book against his spine sent a cold pulse into his blood. The geometric grid flashed over his eyes again, bringing that strange, heavy numbness to his mind. The system drew red target circles on the hound's front knees and the base of its thick neck.
[TARGET MASS: 400 POUNDS. KINETIC TRAJECTORY: LINEAR. FLAW: SPINAL NERVE CLUSTER.]
The hound lunged. It didn't jump like a normal dog; it shot forward like a cannonball, completely ignoring the basic rules of gravity. Its jaws snapped wide open, aiming straight for Arian’s throat. Arian noticed a small piece of blue silk stuck between the beast's back teeth. It belonged to an outer disciple's uniform.
In that high-stress split second, a totally useless thought crossed Arian’s mind. He actually wondered if the dead student tasted like the cheap, watery cabbage soup the academy served every Tuesday. He forced the bizarre thought away and quickly dropped his center of gravity.
He didn't try to dodge out of the way. He stepped directly into the hound’s path. As the beast’s jaws snapped shut, Arian drove his left forearm straight into its mouth. The hound’s razor-sharp teeth clamped down hard, expecting to bite through soft flesh and bone.
Instead, a loud, metallic crunch echoed in the dark woods. The beast’s teeth shattered against Arian’s iron-dense arm. The hound let out a confused, high-pitched whimper. The Primordial Dust coating Arian’s skeleton made his bones harder than solid steel. His skin bled, tearing slightly under the pressure, but the bone did not give a single inch.
Arian didn't give the beast a chance to recover. He brought his right fist down like a heavy hammer, striking the exact red circle the Archive had painted on the back of the hound's neck. He put his entire body weight into the blunt blow.
The thick spinal bone snapped with a sickening crack. The massive hound dropped to the mud instantly, completely paralyzed. It twitched once and then stopped moving. Arian pulled his bleeding left arm out of its mouth. He wiped the toxic saliva off his sleeve, feeling no victory. It was just a sick animal pushed mad by the energy leak.
He kept moving north, climbing higher up the slope. The forest was getting colder. Heat always flowed naturally from a hot object to a cold one. The purple energy bleeding from the rift was freezing the very air, aggressively stealing the natural warmth of the mountain. Arian’s breath turned into thick white mist.
Down in the valley, the screams were getting much louder. Arian reached the edge of a high rocky cliff and looked down. The giant gray hand from the rift was now followed by a massive, scaly shoulder. The inner disciples were fighting a losing battle.
Eshani was at the very front of the line. Her blue sword moved in a blur, sending sharp waves of water magic against the beast's scales. She looked tired, but she didn't step back. Arian watched her fight. A heavy pressure pushed down on his chest. It was a brief flash of guilt, the psychological weight of knowing he caused this bloodbath. But the Archive pulsed warmly, burning the guilt away and replacing it with cold logic.
He turned his attention away from the valley and looked at the Northern Ward standing right on the edge of the cliff. This anchor was very different from the southern one. It wasn't a stone pillar. It was a large, floating silver disk, spinning rapidly in mid-air.
Three inner court disciples guarded it. They stood in a tight triangle, feeding their spiritual Qi directly into the spinning disk to keep the barrier stable. They looked exhausted. Sweat poured down their faces, and their hands shook violently under the heavy strain of the broken sky.
Arian stayed hidden behind a large boulder. He watched them carefully. The Archive pulsed again, analyzing the energy flow connecting the three students.
[ENERGY TRANSFER DETECTED. THE TRIANGLE FORMATION SHARES THE LOAD. FLAW: THE WEAKEST LINK CONTROLS THE SPEED.]
Arian looked closer. The disciple on the left was a young boy, maybe sixteen. He was pale, biting his lower lip hard just to stay awake. His legs were shaking badly. He was the weak link. If his energy dropped, the spinning disk would lose its balance and crash.
Arian picked up a heavy, jagged rock from the cold ground. He weighed it in his hand. He didn't need to fight all three of them in a fair match. He just needed to break their concentration for a single second. The system taught him that karma was exactly like an echo. You push the world, and the world pushes back.
He stepped out from behind the boulder and threw the rock. He didn't use any fancy martial art form. He just used his raw, terrifying physical strength. The rock shot through the cold air faster than an arrow. It hit the young pale disciple squarely in the chest.
The boy gasped loudly, his eyes rolling back as the wind was knocked right out of his lungs. He collapsed backward into the dirt. The energy connection broke instantly. The floating silver disk screeched like metal grinding against metal. It wobbled violently, throwing hot sparks in every direction.
The other two guards panicked. "Hold it! Push more Qi into the center!" the older one yelled, his face turning dark red. But it was way too late. The delicate balance was entirely gone.
Arian didn't wait to watch. He sprinted forward, crossing the short distance before the guards could even draw their swords. He ignored the two standing disciples and kicked the wobbling silver disk directly in its center. His iron-heavy boot hit the core with the force of a falling tree.
The Northern Ward shattered into a blinding flash of white light. A heavy shockwave of pure energy threw Arian backward. He hit the ground hard, rolling in the dirt to absorb the harsh impact. The two guards were thrown right off the edge of the cliff, screaming in terror as they fell into the dark valley below.
Arian pushed himself up quickly. His ears were ringing with a sharp, high pitch. He looked up at the sky. The massive invisible dome protecting the academy camp completely dissolved. The magical cage was fully open now.
But something was wrong. The giant gray beast trying to crawl through the spatial rift suddenly stopped roaring. It froze completely in its tracks. The chaotic screams from the disciples fighting in the camp below also stopped. An unnatural, dead silence fell over the entire mountain.
Arian walked to the very edge of the cliff and looked down. The beast wasn't attacking the students anymore. It was slowly pulling itself back into the rift, whining like a beaten dog. It was running away from something else.
A single human figure slowly floated down from the torn purple sky. It wasn't a monster. It was an old man wearing the simple, faded gray robes of a Starfall Academy Elder. But that made no sense. Arian recognized the face from the stone statues in the main hall. That man had been dead for over two hundred years.
The old man opened his eyes. They were completely black, leaking a thick, dark smoke. He looked directly up at the cliff, locking eyes with Arian from a mile away. The ancient, heavy voice of the Archive screamed in Arian’s head for the very first time.
