* Kim's POV*
“ Kim are you sure you want to do this?”
Allison asked for the umpteenth time.
She kept adjusting my dress, fussing over my makeup.
I held her hand. “ Stop please, it’s not that serious”
“ Is there no other way you can raise the money?. I don’t like this one bit” she sighed, plopping down on her bed.
“ It’s either this or I have to tell my parents about the money. I can’t afford to risk Dad’s health by worrying him again” I said, slowly sitting beside her.
“ And he said it’s only just two weeks” I added reassuringly looking at Allison “ it’ll be over before you know it”
“ He made you sign a contract, Kim!” she pointed out. “ Are you sure he’s not dangerous?”
“ I don’t know and I really don’t care” I stood to check myself in the mirror.
“ I just have to do what he says for two weeks and then he’ll be out of my hair” I added.
“ Just be careful, dear” she said “ I wish I could go with you”
“ You just stay here and hold the Fort for me in case my parents call” I replied.
For all my parents knew, I was sleeping over at Allison’s house and finishing my due homework.
Scott called out of the blue and here I was, trying to look pretty on a school night.
The house looked imposing. He was standing outside by the lawn when I arrived.
“ You are really enthusiastic about our arrangement” he teased, checking me out “ you even dressed for the occasion”
I rolled my eyes at him “ Let’s get this over with”.
The party was not what I expected.
There was no loud music.
No frat boys.
Not even a keg of beer was present.
Everyone looked like they woke up at six o’clock to brush their teeth, do their taxes and think of a business idea.
They all sipped their wines and talked in groups and laughed with their mouth covered
“ I thought we were coming to a party” I asked Scott
“ Yes we are.. or so they call it.” He replied, ushering me into the living room.
“ Then why is everyone moving and talking like they’re about to close a multimillion-dollar deal?” I prodded
“ This is their idea of having fun. You’re here basically as a mental support.”. He quipped “ I don’t want to leave here in a strait jacket”
I could see through the fake enthusiasm he had in making introductions.
The way he laughed at their bland jokes.
His reactions to their words were almost pitch-perfect like he rehearsed them.
“ Why do you do this if you don’t like it?” I asked him as soon as those guys were at a safe distance.
“ My dad, he wants me to associate with the offspring of the Elite” he said wryly “ something about a pathway to Ivy League schools”.
“ Well then you should be happy you’re going to a prestigious school” I pointed out to him.
“ I don’t know, man” he sighed “ I just want to play basketball and get drafted not sit around all day and talk about passive income and stocks”
I was about to say something when he started his rehearsed laughter at two other ladies.
I took the opportunity to wander around the house, looking for the bathroom to ease myself.
Luckily, I found the bathroom just in time.
I heard a voice call out my name with surprise just as I was about to twist the doorknob.
I spun around immediately and sighed in disdain.
It was Jason.
He kept looking at me, wide-eyed in shock.
“ Kim what are you doing here?” he asked, his voice heavy with suspicion.
“ I should be asking you the same question, Jason” I shot back
“ A friend invited me. Why are you even here?” he asked again
I read my eyes. “ Well, that should be none of your business, Jason”
“ Let me guess, you’ve been going out with someone behind my back” his face hardened as he moved closer to me “ Don’t think you can fool me for one second”
“ You’re the one who made out with another person behind my back” I shot back at him, standing my ground
“ I told you she just came to talk” he said, raising his voice “ Don’t you forget I stopped her from harassing you that same day”
“ I didn’t ask you to do all that” I retorted “ It’s not my fault you were sticking your tongue down that b***h’s throat”.
He stopped in his tracks, folded his arms and hit me with a look of disapproval.
“ I had a lot of respect for you, Kim. How could you act so cheap...”
“ Kim, are you okay?” a voice called out behind him.
It was Scott.
I held my breath, hoping Jason won’t do anything stupid, praying Scott reads the room quickly.
“ I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Those guys are trying to bore the hell out of me” he said, beaming with smiles,
He was totally oblivious to the tension in the room.
“ Yes dear, I’m fine. I was just looking for the bathroom”. I called out in a petty effort to rile Jason up.
“ Well then, let’s go continue our charade” he said, pointing to the living room “ They’re starting to miss your lovely presence, milady”
Jason watched silently with a scowl on his face as Scott came over and took my hands.
As soon as Scott tried to step out of the door..
Jason blocked his way.
“ Hey man, do we have a problem?” Scott asked gently, squaring up to him.
“ Don’t know about you but I don’t. I was speaking to my girlfriend so why don’t you move elsewhere and mind your own business” said Jason.
“ Well the Lady came here with me” Scott replied, shrugging his shoulders “ It’s only right if she leaves here that same way”
“ The lady doesn’t want to go with you anymore, so kindly move along!” Jadon hissed, balling up his fist.
They stayed that way for some time, sizing each other up.
Each person silently daring the other to make the first move.
Scott turned to me , after what felt like an eternity.
“ Kim, do you want to go with this guy?”.
