THE STRANGE CONVERSATION with the queen played through Zaina’s mind several times in the next few days.
The guards allotted her a bed in one of the female dorms, full of kitchen and laundry maids who viewed Zaina with a good deal of suspicion. Zaina, in turn, didn’t know what to say to them, and so they settled on keeping out of each other’s way.
The Knights were preparing for the expedition, and although most of that work was done at the eyrie, Zaina got called on to do the jobs that the Knights weren’t doing now that they were preparing for the mission.
This meant maintenance work and caring for the animals.
She looked after horses because the stable hand figured that she, being Aranian, knew those. But the palace stables also contained a handful of big white fluffy dogs
