CHAPTER FOUR: When the Alpha Loses Control The howl came again. Closer this time. Aria felt it before she heard it, an icy dread that slid straight into her bones, tightening her chest until breathing hurt. The warmth she’d grown used to inside the lodge vanished, replaced by a sharp, dangerous chill. Kael moved instantly. He stepped in front of her, his body a solid wall of muscle and intent, silver eyes blazing as they locked onto the darkened windows. The surrounding air shifted, thick with power. Stay behind me, he ordered. His voice wasn’t raised, but it carried absolute authority. Aria’s pulse thundered. That wasn’t one of yours. No, he growled. Rogues. The word hit her harder than fear. She’d heard it whispered among the pack, wolves without loyalty, without restraint. Wolves who hunted for pleasure. Another howl split the night, answered by a chorus farther away. Kael cursed under his breath. They’re testing the boundary, he said. And they know you’re here. Her stomach dropped. Because of me. He turned sharply, gripping her shoulders. His touch burned, hot, grounding, terrifyingly intimate. No, he said fiercely. Because the Moon chose you. The windows rattled as something slammed into the tree line outside. Chaos erupted. Wolves shifted mid-run, bones snapping, fur bursting through the skin. The sound should have horrified her, but instead, Aria felt something else stir inside her. Power. Heat flared beneath her skin, pooling low in her belly, spreading through her veins like liquid fire. Kael froze. His eyes snapped back to her, pupils blown wide. Aria… breathe. I... I feel strange, she whispered, knees weakening. He caught her before she fell, hauling her against his chest. The contact was explosive. The bond surged. Her body reacted before her mind could, arching into him, breath hitching as warmth flooded her senses. His scent wrapped around her, deep and intoxicating, making her dizzy with a need she didn’t understand. Kael sucked in a sharp breath. Moon help me, he muttered. You’re triggering the heat. What does that mean? She asked shakily. “It means,” he said, voice rough and strained, that every instinct in me wants to claim you right now. Her cheeks burned. Outside, a roar shook the ground. Kael swore again, then pressed his forehead to hers. I need you to stay here. Lock the door. Don’t open it for anyone but me, Kael He cupped her face, thumbs brushing her cheeks with aching tenderness. Trust me. Then he was gone. She watched from the balcony as he shifted, power ripping through him as his wolf burst free, massive and lethal, silver eyes glowing like twin moons. He leaped into the snow, leading his pack into battle. The fight was brutal. Aria’s heart raced as she saw flashes of fur and teeth, heard snarls and screams echo through the forest. Every time Kael was struck, pain lanced through her chest. She clutched the railing, gasping. Kael, The bond flared violently. Without warning, light exploded around her. Silver spilled from her hands, pulsing like moonlight given form. The air hummed, vibrating with ancient magic. What...what is this? she cried. The rogues froze. The forest went silent. Even Kael stopped mid-attack, his massive head snapping toward the lodge. Aria stood glowing, wrapped in lunar light. The boundary flared to life, an invisible wall of silver energy slamming outward, throwing the rogues back with bone-crushing force. They fled howling into the darkness. The moment it ended, Aria collapsed. Kael was there instantly, human again, catching her before she hit the floor. He carried her inside, kicking the door shut behind him. She clung to him, shaking. I didn’t mean to, You saved us, he said hoarsely. He lay her on the couch, kneeling beside her. His hands hovered over her like he was afraid to touch. “You have moon magic,” he said. Rare. Powerful. Her chest rose and fell rapidly. I don’t want to be a weapon. You’re not, he said firmly. You’re a miracle. The heat surged again, stronger now. Aria whimpered, body arching involuntarily. Kael… something’s wrong. His jaw clenched, restraint etched into every line of his body. The bond reacted to danger. It awakened faster than expected. I feel like I’m burning, she whispered. He swallowed hard. “So do I.” Silence stretched between them, heavy and charged. Slowly, carefully, he reached for her hand. The moment their fingers intertwined, the world narrowed. Fire. Need. Home. Kael leaned down, resting his forehead against hers, breathing her in like oxygen. “If I kiss you,” he warned, “there’s no turning back tonight.” Her lips parted. “I don’t want you to turn back.” His control shattered. Kael’s mouth crashed onto hers—hungry, desperate, reverent. The kiss was deep and consuming, stealing her breath as his hands slid into her hair, anchoring her to him. She kissed him back with equal fire. The bond roared. He pulled away just enough to press his lips to her jaw, her throat, breathing her in like he’d been starving. “Mine,” he growled softly. Her body responded instantly, heat pooling low, aching. “Kael,” she gasped. He froze. With visible effort, he pulled back, resting his forehead against hers again, trembling with restraint. “Not yet,” he whispered. “I want your choice clear. Not driven by magic.” Tears stung her eyes—not from pain, but from how deeply that mattered. Outside, snow continued to fall. Inside, two souls stood on the edge of something irreversible. And Christmas, once broken, was quietly becoming sacred again.
