Joana had barely drifted off to sleep. Despite enduring the gala, she had managed to evade Elijah's inquiries about the pregnancy. Perhaps he was truly unaware; maybe her nerves had heightened her perception, and the Elijah she encountered that evening was simply his typical distant and harsh self.
