Chapter 2

578 Words
I used to be cheerful and optimistic, the one who always made my family and friends laugh. So how did I end up like this? Honestly, the moment I caught him cheating, I already thought about divorce. Back then, the one who threw away his pride and begged me for an entire month, swearing countless times that he would never make the same mistake again, was him. But later, the one who watched me lose my mind with a cold expression and asked whether I was done causing a scene… was also him. The time I broke down the hardest, I almost smashed everything in the house. Pointing at him, I screamed, "Do you think I only forgave you that one time? No. Every single sleepless night, whenever I think about it again, I forgive you all over again. Why is it that you’re the one who made the mistake, but I’m the one suffering for it?!" I wasn’t the one who shattered the glass, yet I was the one forced to walk across it every single day. Tonight was our eighth wedding anniversary. Everything had originally been perfect. Christopher had usually drunk a lot of alcohol. With every sip, he told me once more that he loved me. After hearing those sweet words hundreds of times, both of us were flushed red, as if we had returned to the days when we were deeply in love. I even silently thought to myself that maybe… maybe I really should forgive him and pretend nothing had ever happened. But only now did I suddenly realize how ridiculous I had been. His loss of composure wasn’t because he loved me. It was because another woman was leaving. And so, all of a sudden, I felt like there was nothing left to regret. I pulled out the divorce agreement I had prepared long ago from the bedside drawer and handed it to him. "Christopher, I’m finally letting you go." But he immediately sprang up from bed. "Vivian, will you only be satisfied after you drive me to my death? Claire is leaving for Toronto soon. After that, we won’t even have the chance to meet again. I’m only going to see her off as her professor. Is that not even allowed?!" His phone suddenly rang. The moment he answered it, his voice became unbelievably gentle, "Hmm, wait for me. I’ll be there in half an hour." Before leaving, Christopher threw the divorce papers into the trash can. "We’ll talk about everything after I come back. But divorce? Don’t even think about it." The door slammed shut so hard it shook the room. Inside the bedroom, the only sound left was my quiet sobbing. I already checked earlier. There were no flights to Toronto tonight at all. Sure enough, not long after, Claire sent me a photo. Christopher was leaning against her bare-chested, sleeping peacefully in her arms. After that, she sent a message. Claire Sullivan: Professor Elowen said that, nowadays, he can only fall asleep when he’s beside me. Do you really think he refuses to divorce you because he still loves you? He just doesn’t want it to affect next week’s evaluation for the Vice Dean promotion. Looking at the divorce agreement inside the trash can, the one where I had originally intended to split everything equally, I suddenly laughed. The one who betrayed this marriage was him. So the one who should pay the price… should also be him.
