*Ava*
As Caleb pulls into the driveway of his beach house, the sound of the waves crashing against the shore fills the air, providing a stark contrast to the chaos that’s been swirling in my mind. I glance over at him, my heart still racing with remnants of fear. He looks focused, determined, but I can feel the tension radiating from him, a silent promise that he will protect me at all costs.
“Just breathe,” he says, his voice low and steady as he parks the car. “We’re safe here.”
I nod, but the knot in my stomach remains. This place is beautiful… white walls, big windows, a sprawling deck, and palm trees swaying gently in the salty breeze… but I can’t shake the darkness that has followed me here. I step out of the car and take a deep breath of the fresh ocean air, hoping it will clear my mind, if only for a moment.
As we walk toward the entrance, I catch sight of Butterscotch, Caleb’s golden retriever, bounding toward us with uncontainable excitement. His tail wags furiously, and I can’t help but smile as he jumps up to greet me, his warm, fluffy body a welcome distraction from the weight of my worries.
“Hey, buddy!” I laugh, kneeling to scratch behind his ears. Butterscotch licks my face, and for a brief moment, I forget about everything that just happened.
“Come on in, Ava,” Caleb says gently, ushering me inside. “Virginia’s here. I’ll get us some tea.”
As I step into the cozy living room, I’m greeted by the familiar smell of cinnamon and vanilla wafting through the air. Virginia is in the kitchen, her hands busy as she prepares something warm. When she sees me, her expression shifts from surprise to concern in an instant.
“Ava? What happened?” she asks, her voice laced with worry. I can see the questions in her eyes as she sets down the kettle and wipes her hands on a towel.
Before I can respond, Caleb steps in, his tone serious. “Ava’s car was vandalized. Graffiti everywhere, he had also been at her house and it seems like it’s connected to a guy she canceled her date with.”
Virginia’s eyes widen, and she moves closer to me, her gaze intense. “What do you mean? Why did he… do that?”
I shake my head, swallowing hard. “I don’t even know why he would. I never went on the date. I canceled it because of Rasmus’ accident. He sent me an angry message, but I didn’t think he’d actually hurt me.” My voice trembles at the last word, and I feel the tears threaten again.
Caleb reaches for my hand, squeezing it reassuringly. “We’re going to figure this out. But for now, you need to stay safe. I told Ava that she can stay in your little house next door.”
Virginia’s brow furrows in confusion. “Wait, I told Rasmus he could stay there. He can’t be in his own place because of the stairs.”
My heart sinks at the mention of Rasmus. “It’s okay, I can go to a hotel or something,” I say quickly, wanting to alleviate the tension that’s building between them.
Caleb shakes his head, his voice firm. “No way. That’s not safe, Ava. The house has two small bedrooms, and if you both stay, Rasmus has help if he needs it, and you have someone to protect you just in case… win-win.”
I hesitate, feeling the weight of the decision pressing down on me. A part of me knows that it’s probably a bad idea to share a space with someone I barely know, especially with everything that’s happened… and especially Rasmus. But I also realize that I don’t have many options right now.
“Okay,” I finally say, my voice steadying despite the turmoil inside me. “I’ll stay.”
“Good,” Caleb says, relief flooding his features. “You’ll be safe there, I promise.”
Virginia glances between us, her expression softening. “We’ll make it work, Ava. You’re not alone. Just take a deep breath and let’s figure this out together.”
As she moves to fill mugs with steaming tea, I take a moment to process everything. I can’t believe how quickly my life has turned upside down. Just days ago, I was excited about a date, imagining what it would be like to get to know someone new. Now, I’m standing in Caleb’s beach house, feeling like a prisoner of my own fear.
Butterscotch nudges my hand, and I scratch his ears again, letting the warmth of his presence comfort me. “You’re my protector now, huh?” I murmur, and he responds with a playful woof.
“Let’s sit down and talk,” Virginia suggests, bringing the mugs to the table. She hands me one, and the warmth seeps into my palms, grounding me further.
As we settle into the cozy living room, I glance at Caleb and Virginia, who are both looking at me with concern etched on their faces. “I just don’t get it,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper. “I didn’t even get to know this guy. Why would he take it this far?”
Caleb leans forward, his expression serious. “Some people can’t handle rejection. It’s a twisted way of thinking, but it happens. The important thing is that you’re safe now. We’ll keep an eye out for anything suspicious.”
Virginia nods in agreement. “You’re not in this alone, Ava. We’ll help however we can. We’ll keep Rasmus in the loop, and together, we’ll figure out a plan to make sure you’re protected… he should be out of the hospital tomorrow.”
I take a sip of my tea, feeling the warmth spread through me, a small flicker of hope igniting amidst the fear. “Thank you,” I say softly, wishing I could express how much their support means to me. “I really appreciate it.”
