--- *LILY* *Chapter 8: Confrontation* For 3 days, Lily didn’t answer his calls. She filed the report. Gave Detective Bello the email. Gave a statement. The media called it “The Richard Corp Cold Case Reopened.” St. Mercy put her on administrative leave. “For your safety,” Rina said. Lily told herself she was fine. She wasn’t. Every time her phone buzzed, her chest tightened. 12 missed calls. All from Lawrence. 3 voicemails. She didn’t listen to them. On day 4, he showed up at the hospital. --- *2:14 PM. St. Mercy. East Wing.* Lily was dropping off her ID badge when she saw him. Lawrence. In a plain t-shirt and jeans. No security. No suit. He looked tired. And thinner. “Lily,” he said. She stopped walking. “You can’t be here.” “I had to see you,” he said. “To ask you one thing.” “What?” “Was any of it real?” His voice was rough. “The coffee. The 3 AM talks. Me trusting you with admin access. Was any of it real, or was it all about the case?” The question hit like a punch. Lily lifted her chin. “I don’t know anymore.” Lawrence flinched. “That’s not an answer.” “It’s the only one I have,” she said. “I thought you were just a patient. Then you were an ally. Now you’re... the son of the people who killed my parents.” “I’m not them,” he said. “But you’re theirs,” Lily said. “And I don’t know how to separate that yet.” She walked past him. “Lily, wait—” She didn’t. --- *6:00 PM. Richard Estate.* If she couldn’t talk to him, she’d talk to them. Margaret Richard answered the door herself. “Lily Roland,” Margaret said. No surprise. “We’ve been expecting you.” Lily stepped inside. The house was too big. Too quiet. “I have a few questions,” Lily said. “Of course,” Margaret said smoothly. “Tea?” “No. Thank you.” They sat in the living room. Victor wasn’t here. Margaret poured tea with perfect hands. “You look just like your mother,” she said suddenly. “Such a tragedy what happened to the Rolands.” Lily’s blood went cold. “You remember her?” “Of course,” Margaret said. “Lovely woman. Terrible what happened. Robbery, was it?” Lily stared at her. “You know it wasn’t a robbery.” Margaret’s smile didn’t waver. “Do I? The police said—” “The police were wrong,” Lily cut in. “And I have proof. An email. From your husband.” For a second, Margaret’s mask slipped. Just a flicker. Then it was back. “I’m sure there’s a misunderstanding.” “Is there?” Lily stood. “Because your son quit the company over it.” Margaret set her cup down. “Lawrence always was... emotional. He’ll come back. They always do.” Lily walked to the door. “He’s not coming back.” As she left, Margaret called after her: “Be careful, dear. Digging up the past can get people hurt.” It wasn’t a threat. It was a promise. --- *11:40 PM. Lily’s apartment.* She was packing a bag. She couldn’t stay here. Not after that photo. Not after today. Her phone rang. Lawrence. She answered before she could think. “Where are you?” he asked. No hello. “Home. Packing.” “Don’t,” he said. “Please. Let me come over.” “Why?” “Because I’m tired of doing this wrong,” he said. “And because my dad called me today. He said, ‘Fix this. Or you’re out of the company.’” Lily went still. “What did you say?” “I said I already did,” Lawrence said. “I chose.” Silence. “Come over,” Lily said finally. “We need to talk. Before I go to the police tomorrow.” “20 minutes,” he said. --- *12:05 AM.* Lawrence showed up with takeout and no agenda. They sat on her floor. No table. “I’m scared,” Lily admitted. “Of what happens next. Of court. Of them. Of... you.” “I know,” Lawrence said. “I’m scared too. Of losing you. Of what my name did to you.” He looked at her. “I can’t change what my dad did. But I can choose what I do now. And I choose you. I choose the truth.” Lily nodded. Tears fell. She didn’t wipe them. “Okay,” she said. “Tomorrow. We go together.” Lawrence reached out. Took her hand. No kiss. No almost. Just his hand in hers. And for the first time in 17 years, Lily didn’t pull away. ---
