Chapter 4- A DEEPER SECRET

598 Words
For the first time, I wondered whether I had been looking at the wrong betrayal all along. I hurried after Cynthia. “Wait!” She stopped near the entrance but didn't turn around. “Tell me what you meant.” She finally faced me. “Daniel was seeing someone else before me.” My mind went blank. “Who?” “I don't know her name.” “Then how do you know?” Cynthia lowered her voice. “Because I found her messages on his phone. He told her the same things he told me.” I stared at her. “So I wasn't the only woman?” “No.” That was the moment everything became clear. Daniel hadn't simply fallen for my best friend. He had been lying to both of us. I called him immediately. He answered after the second ring. “Veronica—” “Don't explain. Just answer one question. Was Cynthia the only woman you were seeing?” Silence. That silence was enough. “I understand now,” I said. “Please, let me explain.” “I don't want an explanation anymore.” I ended the call. For days, I felt strangely calm. The pain was still there, but it no longer controlled me. I had spent so much time asking myself what I had done wrong that I had forgotten one important truth: someone else's dishonesty wasn't my failure. Daniel tried several times to reach me. I refused every call. Cynthia also stopped contacting me. Eventually, I heard that she had ended things with him. She told a mutual friend that she could never trust Daniel after discovering how many lies he had told. I wasn't happy about it. I simply accepted that some consequences arrive naturally. Months passed. Life slowly became peaceful again. I started spending more time with my family and friends. I laughed without forcing it. I stopped checking my phone whenever a message arrived, wondering whether it was Daniel. One evening, I received a message from Cynthia. I'm sorry. I know I broke something that can never be repaired. I don't expect you to forgive me. I stared at those words for a while. Then I replied. I forgive you, but I can't be your best friend again. Some things change after betrayal. I hope you understand. She responded with a simple: I do. That was the last conversation we ever had. A year later, I was sitting in a café when I noticed Daniel across the room. Our eyes met. He approached cautiously. “Veronica.” I smiled politely. “Hello, Daniel.” “You look happy.” “I am.” He nodded. “I lost a good woman.” “No,” I replied. “You lost someone who trusted you.” He looked down. “You're right.” I stood and picked up my bag. “I hope you've learned from what happened.” “I have.” I walked away without anger, regret, or the need for another conversation. Once, I thought my best friend had stolen my man. Now I understood something different. Daniel was never something Cynthia could steal from me. He was a person who made his own choices. And so did I. I chose myself. I chose peace. Most importantly, I chose not to let someone else's betrayal determine the kind of woman I would become. As I stepped outside into the evening air, I smiled. My old life had ended. But for the first time, I was excited about what came Next. TO BE CONTINUED...
