LockhartT wo weeks later, Shake was in his shop working on an intricate free-form table that Chan wanted for the house. It was supposed to look like a long oval slab supported by a tree branch. He had the parts all finished and prepared, but assembly was making him crazy. Bear was happily watching in his sphinx pose near the table saw and covered in sawdust. The session with the Sheriff to make his official statement had morphed into a two-day grilling with questions from several State and Federal law enforcement agencies. By the end of it, after curious lines of questioning from the Feds, Shake decided that he had been the target of a contract hitter. Why was still an open question, but he was beginning to think it had something to do with their encounter during the Rio Grande crossing.
