Chapter Three
Ajax
‘I hope it doesn't break your heart when you find her dead on the morrow, Alpha.’ Those words had been ingrained on my mind ever since I woke up in my bed this morning. Benjamin had found me in the locker room in my helpless state and as much as I wished he hadn't called anyone's attention to it, he had. Now the whole pack thought someone had ‘apparently’ beaten up their Alpha.
I had two problems now, speaking to the pack about what actually happened in the locker room and Riley. I couldn't both. I collapsed on my bed and let out a sigh.
I would be lying if I said I knew what to do just as I would be lying if I said I didn't know what to do. The thought has been spilling into the back of my mind ever sj ce this afternoon. Banished wolves had a less than twenty percent chance of surviving the wilderness beyond pack borders, it's why I didn't want to banish Riley but leaving it to the witch’s hands meant a hundred percent chance of dying. I didn't want that to happen, banishing was an option, my only option for now.
“Alpha are you alright?” My Beta peeped in through the doorway.
“Yeah.” I nodded at him.
“The pack's waiting for you.” He told me.
“I know that.” I said to him. “Is Riley there?” I asked him.
“No.” He responded walking him. “I need to know what happened back there in the girls locker room. The whole pack wants to.” He told me.
I gave him a blank expression, “Send a few guards over to Riley’s house. I want her here at the pack house when I make the announcement.”
“Is there any problem between you both?”
“No.” But there would be, of course I didn't say that out loud. Asides Benji and my sister Willow, no one else knew about my relationship with Riley.
“Alright, I would go get her myself.” He closed the door behind him as he walked out. The creaking sound of it pissed me off, I was getting angry at even the slightest things.
My wolf was upset, I was upset. I got off my bed and went to the bathroom to take a bath. Scrubbing off every part of my body as if the soap would wash away the guilt that engulfed my heart. I had just one thought keeping me going, if my plan worked as I hoped it would. Riley would be safe in another pack away from here. It's better to have an estranged mate to lose a mate forever.
Riley's POV.
“Who is it?” I wiped off the tears on my face when I heard a knock on my door.
“Hey Riley, it's Benji.” I froze. Benjamin Ashbourne. What the heck was he doing here. I paced towards the door and opened it in a rush.
“What do you want?” My tone came out sharp and accusing.
“I'm sorry, it's just Ajax told me to bring you over to the pack house for the celebration.”
“Tell him I do not wish to come.” I slammed the door against his face. Benji's quick reflexes instantly kicked in and be opened it back.
“He actually wants to see you, there's an important announcement he wants to make to the whole pack and he wants you there.” he insisted.
“That’s none of my business.”
“Riley please, I know you're angry at him but he might just want to make things right. Think about it, I'm sorry about this morning too and I don't know what the hell came over him, please.”
I folded my hands up above my chest, he did make a point. I loved Ajax and rejecting him didn't reduce that love one bit but I doubt he was trying to make any right. This only sounded like a plot to disgrace me further.
“I don't know Benji, the last time I had such hopes like this, I was crushed.”
“I understand but I'm imploring you to take your chances. You don't know what he has to say.”
I thought about it for a while, I wouldn't be able to live with my conscience if I didn't give this a chance.
“Fine.” I told him. This was just one last chance I was giving to Ajax and he better not break my heart this time.
“Thank you.”
Benji drove me to the pack house himself, every pack member had already arrived by the time I got there. I got out of the car and went in without waiting for Benji,I just wanted to stay somewhere I couldn't be seen. Ever since this morning, it had felt like every eyes I saw was watching me, pitying me. I didn't want to live through that again.
“Riley, you came.” Willow found me seated at one of the tables at the corner. I don't know how she had but I'm glad she did. Of all the faces in the pack, she had the only face I could stand seeing.
I gave her a nod, “yeah.”
“I'm so sorry about my brother, I didn't know about his plans to announce Lola as his mate. It came as a shock and I swear I haven't talked to him since, there's no way I'm going to do tha5 if he doesn't make it up to you.”
I gave her a weak smile, “you don't have to, he is your brother and your Alpha. I'm not that important.”
“You are my best friend Riley and that alone makes you more important than everyone else in this room, okay.” She said assuringly.
I nodded and turned my head to the podium, Ajax had just entered the hall and I held my fingers shakily. I didn't know what I was expecting but this did not feel good.
“Hello, my dear esteemed pack members. I'm sure we are all having a good time aren't we?” He smiled but I could see the smile didn't exactly reach the corner of his lips.
“It's no news what happened at the girls locker room.” The girls locker room? Did the whole pack know about the rejection now.
“It's something that has never happened before in the history of the pack and I want you all to know that the person who put me in that situation is no other than Riley Stone!” A few pack members let out a gasp when he said that, I didn't understand what he meant but from their reaction I could tell it was no good.
“What?” Willow mumbled.
“What does he mean?” I asked her but she wants listening to me anymore.
Ajax continued his speech, “No Alpha of this pack has ever been subdued by any wolf before how much more an Omega. I don't know how she did it but I'm sure it's clear to us that Riley now poses a threat to us all in this pack. Riley attacked me as a revenge for rejecting her as my fated mate, as a result I want her cast out of Moon Ridge immediately.”
At the same moment, the guards at the entrance surrounded me and Willow. Willow planted herself in front of me and faced them immediately.
“Stand down!” She ordered.
“The Alpha wants us to arrest her.”
“I heard that but I'm telling you to stand down. No one here gets to touch her until I speak to my brother.” She gave them a stern order. The guards looked among themselves before releasing their weapons. Their leader stepped forward and began speaking to Willow.
“We all know about your friendship with Miss Stone but the Alpha has given us all clear orders. If you don't allow us to do our jobs, we would have no choice but to arrest you along side the prisoner.”
“She is not a prisoner, my brother doesn't know what he is saying!” Willow snarled at them all, just as she she was speaking one of the guards held her from behind and picked her up taking her away while she struggled against his hold.
The remaining two flanked me at both sides and prepared to drag me out. I tried my best to wriggle out of their hold but the guards held me down, “if you know what's best for you, you would stay put.” He whispered against my ears. The shame and regret that covered me now had no comparison to what I felt earlier before. Ajax had only been using me as I feared.
They dragged me out to the floor outside the pack house, the air was cold against my skin. Their hold on me was tight and stong, there was no way I could escape them even if I wanted to.
“You really have some gut attempting to attack the alpha.” One of the guards spat at me.
‘I didn't do anything!” I was going to tell him that but not like whatever I said would make any difference. They only listened to Ajax and right now realizing what my fate was, I knew I should never have come tonight.
