Shattered

“What?!” Damian blurted, turning quickly to face Sophie; he couldn't believe his ears. “She is a waitress at the Blackwood Regency Hotel… our hotel,” Sophie said, passing the card over to Damian. “Sh…she…is a staff.” Peter stammered. “So… The woman who humiliated me at the bar somehow works under my name?” Damian held onto the ID, staring at it like it was a trophy. “Call the manager at the branch she works at; make him tell everything he knows,” Damian ordered, this time sitting on his chair. “Yes, sir,” Peter and Sophie mumbled, walking out of the office. Damian's eyes glowed with an unfamiliar glint as his lips curved into a small, devilish smile. Lily shot her eyes open with a loud gasp. Her head throbbed and her eyes spun. For a few minutes, she could not remember how she went to bed last night, and then gradually, the memories came pouring in. The bar scene replayed in her head, every detail. She gasped. How could she be so stupid as to curse out her boss? But he wouldn't know she works under him. He has many staff; a lowly waitress would be the least of his worries, considering that he never held any meetings with them. As a matter of fact, she didn't even know what he looked like until yesterday at the bar. She shouldn't have gone so far as to insult him; she should have walked away. “Oh my God…..” What has she done? She buried her head in her lap, full of regret.“What if he finds out she works for him?”She would lose her job. “He wouldn't,” she assured herself; such rich folks don't care about the poor, and he would be too busy signing papers in his polished office. She buried her head in her palms, praying silently that he would forget her face, forget her voice, forget everything that happened at the bar, and forget she ever existed. Her bedside alarm rang noisily, disrupting the peace of the room. It was 6AM. Lily remained on her bed. When the alarm stopped ringing and the room went back to its formerly quiet state, she couldn't help but miss Ivy. If she wasn't admitted, the room wouldn't be this quiet. Ivy would have woken her up with her tiny feet; she would bang the door loudly heading for the sitting room or looking for her toys, which Lily had hidden the night before in order not to be disturbed in the morning. She struggled out of the bed; she needed to go see Ivy. She should at least go to the hospital and stay with her daughter. Her shift wasn't till 10 anyway. She reached for her phone. Still no call from Ethan. Not even an apology text. She dragged her feet to the bathroom, washed her face till her eyes stopped looking so swollen, and pulled on the only clean shirt that was still available in her closet. Stepped into another pair of trousers, picked up her bag, and walked out of her apartment. The bus ride that morning was quiet; the cold air slipping through the windows and brushing her hair. Her hair!! She had forgotten to style it back into place, she must really look like a mentally deranged person right now. She looked around the bus; she thought everyone would be staring at her, but no one was. She felt relieved, too scared to look at her image in the window. When she stepped into Blackwood Hospital, the regular smell of disinfectant hit her nose. Her legs carried her on their own, her mind vague. Room 401 She pushed open the door; there she was, her Ivy, her baby girl, lying pale on the bed beneath white sheets, her chest heaving slowly, tubes connected to different parts of her body. The monitor was beeping softly. “Oh my dear,” Lily cried, walking towards the bed and kneeling beside it, her shaken hands reaching for Ivy’s cold fingers. “Ivy…” she called.“My sweetheart… Mummy is here,” she whispered. But Ivy didn't move. “Please… Don't leave me, I will get the money… I promise,” her sobs clashing with the beeping sounds from the monitor. Her phone buzzed loudly from her bag; she picked up the call without looking at the caller ID, wiping her tears with the back of her hands. “Ethan?” She asked; he was her only hope, and somehow she wanted him to be the one calling. “Lily…” Becky's sharp voice came in from the other end. “Hey…” Lily's voice cracked. “I… I am at the hospital.” “I figured… How is Ivy?" “Same old way… not much difference,” Lily mumbled. Becky sighed pitifully. “The bill… were you able to pay the hospital's bills?" Lily shook her head, even though Becky couldn't see her.“No… I still don't have it.” Becky paused for a second. “What about Ethan?” She asked, “I know I have always been against him and all, but this might be a good time for him to prove himself, he could be of help.” Lily broke down, sobbing. “No… I…I… I caught him with someone else.” Lily spilled. "Ivy’s sick, and he…he's… He has been cheating… I don't know what to do.” “What?!” Becky exclaimed, “I know this isn't the right time, but I warned you. Ethan’s never been good; he is selfish. How could he do this at your worst moment?” “I know…” Lily muttered, “I should've listened to you. I guess I… I wanted him to care… to love me… I can't do this, Becky… I can't… I am failing Ivy.” “You are not failing Ivy.” Becky snapped.“You’ve done all you could, and you are still going … You will get through this.” “I hope so,” Lily whispered. “I am so sorry you have to go through this, I wish I could help.” “You’ve done enough, Becky… more than enough.” The line was silent. “I think you need to come over to the hotel.” Becky's voice was laced with concern. “Why?… My shift isn't until 10.” Becky hesitated for a while. “I overheard two of our colleagues earlier… something about an order from the higher-ups… I think they want to let you go…”
