Fellicity Johnson sat alone on the old wooden bench beneath the oak trees that lined the outer path of the academy grounds.
The early afternoon sun filtered through the leaves, scattering soft patterns of light across the gravel walkway.
Students passed by occasionally, some laughing, some whispering, some pretending not to stare at the young woman sitting so perfectly still.
Fellicity watched none of them.
Her attention was fixed on a single figure walking across the courtyard.
Stephanie.
The girl moved toward the campus buildings with quiet determination, her books pressed tightly against her chest.
She had returned.
The entire pack knew it.
Rumors had spread through the territory faster than wildfire.
Florence had been beaten.
Then sold to Alpha Anthony.
The story had grown darker with every telling.
Fellicity had heard the whispers everywhere.
At the academy.
At the market.
Even at home.
Especially at home.
Her father had been speaking with Leonard Littlewood for days.
And that morning, everything had changed.
Fellicity lowered her gaze to the folded document resting in her lap.
The agreement.
Signed by Alpha Elliot himself.
Her father had shown it to her over breakfast.
The meaning had been unmistakable.
As soon as Amber married Anthony…
Fellicity would be promised to Kevin.
A political marriage.
A strategic alliance.
A decision made by men who never once considered asking her opinion.
Fellicity exhaled slowly.
Her fingers tightened slightly on the paper.
Kevin.
The future Alpha of Elliot's pack.
Strong.
Arrogant.
And completely unacceptable as a husband.
Not because he was cruel.
Not because he was weak.
But because marrying him meant surrendering control of her own future.
And Fellicity Johnson had never surrendered anything in her life.
She leaned back slightly on the bench.
For a moment she closed her eyes.
Then someone suddenly dropped down beside her.
The bench creaked loudly.
Fellicity opened her eyes.
Matthew.
He looked entirely too pleased with himself.
Without saying a word, he extended his hand toward her.
In his fingers was a flower.
A night lily.
Fellicity’s eyes widened.
She immediately took it.
“Where did you find this?”
Her voice carried genuine delight.
Night lilies did not grow easily within their territory.
Matthew shrugged casually.
“Ran past the lake yesterday.”
Fellicity raised one eyebrow.
“The lake?”
Her gaze sharpened slightly.
“That’s inside Alpha Anthony’s territory.”
Matthew grinned.
“Well,” he said lightly, “I’m allowed a little more freedom than most.”
He winked.
Fellicity felt warmth rise unexpectedly in her cheeks.
She quickly looked down at the flower.
The lily was delicate, pale silver with faint purple veins across its petals.
Beautiful.
And rare.
Matthew leaned back comfortably on the bench.
“You like it?”
Fellicity smiled softly.
“Yes.”
But then her attention shifted.
Across the courtyard.
Kevin.
He was moving quickly across the academy grounds.
Almost running.
And his direction was obvious.
Stephanie.
Matthew noticed the change immediately.
He followed her gaze.
Then his expression darkened slightly.
“You’re not starting to like Kevin, are you?”
Fellicity lowered her eyes.
“No.”
Her voice was quiet.
“Then why are you staring?”
She hesitated for a moment.
Then answered honestly.
“My father told me this morning.”
Matthew turned his head slightly toward her.
“Told you what?”
Fellicity spoke without looking up.
“They intend to marry me to him.”
Matthew stared at her.
“Kevin?”
She nodded slowly.
“It will be a political alliance.”
Matthew looked toward the courtyard again.
Kevin had already reached Stephanie.
They were speaking now.
Too far away to hear.
Matthew leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
“I’m sorry.”
Fellicity exhaled slowly.
“It doesn’t matter.”
Matthew glanced at her.
“Doesn’t it?”
She gave a faint smile.
“Marriage is rarely about what we want.”
Matthew watched her carefully.
Then something occurred to him.
“Wait.”
He frowned.
“Isn’t Kevin with Stephanie?”
Fellicity shrugged lightly.
“That doesn’t matter.”
Her voice remained calm.
“Who we spend time with before marriage isn’t important.”
Matthew studied her face.
“What matters,” she continued quietly, “is loyalty after the marriage.”
She lifted the lily slightly, twirling it between her fingers.
“So Kevin is free to entertain himself.”
Matthew watched her for a moment.
Then he turned his gaze toward the campus again.
Then back to her.
Slowly, deliberately, he reached for her hand.
Fellicity froze.
His fingers closed gently around hers.
Immediately he felt the difference.
Her pulse.
Fast.
Much faster than she had been pretending.
Matthew’s lips curved slightly.
“And you?” he asked softly.
Fellicity blinked.
“You?”
His voice dropped slightly lower.
“Don’t you want to entertain yourself?”
Her eyes widened.
Color rushed to her face instantly.
Her cheeks turned deep crimson.
She pulled her hand back quickly.
At that exact moment someone called her name from across the courtyard.
Fellicity stood abruptly.
“I should go.”
Her voice sounded breathless.
She glanced at Matthew once more.
Then quickly added,
“Thank you for the flower.”
And before he could respond, she hurried away.
Almost fleeing.
Matthew watched her go.
For several seconds he remained sitting on the bench.
Then he chuckled softly.
“You’re doing very well.”
Matthew did not turn.
He already knew the voice.
A man stepped out from behind one of the oak trees.
Finn.
Tall.
Calm.
Watching everything with the quiet patience of a hunter.
Matthew finally stood.
“You were watching.”
Finn shrugged slightly.
“Of course.”
Matthew crossed his arms.
“You seem satisfied.”
Finn’s lips curved faintly.
“You’re moving faster than I expected.”
Matthew smirked.
“I’m enjoying it.”
Finn glanced toward the direction Fellicity had disappeared.
“Judging by her reaction…”
He paused.
“She seems to find you very suitable entertainment.”
Matthew raised an eyebrow.
“Is that the goal?”
Finn looked back at him.
“For now.”
Matthew studied him carefully.
“What happens next?”
Finn leaned casually against the tree.
“Nothing.”
Matthew frowned.
“Nothing?”
Finn nodded.
“For the moment, everything is unfolding exactly as I planned.”
He glanced briefly toward the academy buildings.
“Fellicity Johnson is intelligent.”
“Ambitious.”
“And desperate to avoid marrying Kevin.”
Matthew nodded slowly.
“That much is obvious.”
Finn continued.
“She will begin looking for ways to escape the marriage.”
Matthew’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“And we help her?”
Finn smiled.
“Not directly.”
Matthew waited.
Finn’s voice lowered slightly.
“What we need… is scandal.”
Matthew understood immediately.
“A ruined reputation.”
Finn nodded.
“The future Luna of Kevin must be completely disgraced.”
Matthew tilted his head.
“And I’m the tool.”
Finn met his gaze calmly.
“Yes.”
Matthew considered this for a moment.
Then he asked,
“And my payment?”
Finn’s smile widened slightly.
“Four rubies.”
Matthew’s eyes glinted.
Expensive stones.
More than enough to make the effort worthwhile.
He nodded slowly.
“Then I suppose I should continue entertaining her.”
Finn pushed away from the tree.
“Yes.”
His gaze moved toward the distant courtyard.
Where Kevin and Stephanie were now walking side by side.
“And soon,” Finn said quietly, “everything will begin to burn.”
Matthew watched Fellicity disappear into the academy building.
He smiled slowly.
The game had just begun.
