Lines That Shouldn’t Be Crossed

Klay didn’t sleep much that night. Not because of the party. Not because of the noise or the late hour. Because of the kiss. It had been simple. Quick. Almost accidental. But his mind kept replaying it like a loop he couldn’t turn off. The way Amara had leaned forward first. The small pause right before their lips touched. And the look on her face afterward—half surprised, half thoughtful. Klay stared at the ceiling of his apartment again, the faint glow of early morning light creeping through the blinds. His phone sat on the nightstand beside him. He had checked it at least six times. No message yet. He told himself not to overthink it. People slept in after parties. Still… his chest carried that familiar tight feeling. The same feeling he got whenever someone important to him suddenly went quiet. ⸻ Around eleven that morning, his phone finally buzzed. Klay grabbed it immediately. Amara: You alive? Relief washed through him. He typed quickly. Klay: Barely. Three dots appeared. Amara: Same. Then another message. Coffee? Klay smiled slightly. ⸻ The campus café was quieter than usual. Most students were still recovering from the night before, which meant the usual lunch crowd hadn’t arrived yet. Klay sat at a small table near the window when Amara walked in. She looked slightly tired, but still effortlessly composed. When she saw him, she gave a small smile. “Morning.” “Morning.” She sat across from him. For a moment neither spoke. It wasn’t awkward exactly. But it wasn’t as easy as usual either. Finally Amara sighed. “Okay.” “Okay what?” “We should probably acknowledge what happened.” Klay raised an eyebrow. “You mean the kiss?” “Yeah.” He leaned back slightly. “Alright.” She stirred her coffee slowly. “That wasn’t planned.” “I figured.” “And I’m not someone who jumps into things quickly.” Klay nodded. “I understand.” She looked up at him carefully. “You do?” “Yeah.” He paused before continuing. “But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like it.” Amara smiled faintly. “I liked it too.” The tension eased slightly. “But,” she added. Klay’s stomach tightened. “Here it comes.” She sighed. “I just don’t want things to get complicated.” “Things are always complicated.” “Exactly.” She looked out the window for a moment. “I’ve seen what happens when people rush into feelings.” Klay understood what she was really saying. Slow down. Don’t get too attached. Don’t expect too much. But his heart had never been very good at following those rules. “So what are you saying?” he asked quietly. Amara looked back at him. “I’m saying… let’s just see where things go.” Klay nodded. “That sounds fair.” But somewhere deep inside, he already knew something. He was already further in than she was. ⸻ Across campus, Michael Carter was having a much worse morning. The sunlight streaming through the windows of his apartment felt too bright. His head pounded. The small glass table in front of him was covered in empty bottles, playing cards, and the remains of last night’s poker game. Ryan sat on the couch nearby scrolling through his phone. Michael rubbed his temples. “You look like hell,” Ryan said. “Shut up.” Ryan smirked. “Party too hard?” Michael didn’t answer. Instead he stood up and walked toward the kitchen. Ryan watched him. “You still thinking about it?” Michael opened the cabinet. “Thinking about what?” Ryan leaned back casually. “Amara and your new friend.” Michael froze slightly. Only for a second. Then he grabbed a glass. “They’re just talking.” Ryan raised an eyebrow. “Looked like more than talking.” Michael turned back slowly. “Say what you’re trying to say.” Ryan shrugged. “I’m saying she kissed him.” Michael’s jaw tightened. “How would you know that?” “I saw them outside.” Silence filled the apartment. Michael set the glass down harder than necessary. Ryan studied him. “You care more than you admit.” Michael laughed. But it sounded forced. “Relax. I’m not jealous.” Ryan smirked. “Sure.” Michael didn’t respond. Instead he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small folded bag. Ryan watched quietly. “You should slow down with that stuff.” Michael ignored him. The white powder disappeared quickly. Ryan sighed. “That’s exactly what I’m talking about.” Michael wiped his nose and leaned back against the counter. “I’m fine.” “You’ve said that a lot lately.” Michael looked toward the window. His mind replayed the moment from the night before. Amara leaning toward Klay. The kiss. Something about it had triggered a feeling he didn’t like. Not jealousy exactly. Something closer to ownership. And losing control. ⸻ Later that afternoon, Klay walked across campus toward his next class. His conversation with Amara still played in his mind. Let’s just see where things go. It was a reasonable answer. But it didn’t stop the feeling growing inside his chest. Because he already knew something. He was falling for her. Faster than he should. As he turned the corner near the athletic building, a voice behind him said, “Kingston.” Klay stopped. He turned around. Michael Carter stood a few feet away. Hands in his pockets. Expression calm. But something about his posture felt tense. “Hey,” Klay said. Michael stepped closer. “You free for a minute?” “Sure.” They stood near the empty walkway. Students passed by occasionally, but most were heading in the opposite direction. Michael studied him for a moment. “You like Amara.” It wasn’t a question. Klay didn’t bother pretending. “Yeah.” Michael nodded slowly. “She’s complicated.” “So I’ve heard.” “More than you realize.” Klay shrugged. “I’ll figure it out.” Michael’s eyes narrowed slightly. “You sure about that?” “What’s that supposed to mean?” Michael took a step closer. “Just a warning.” Klay frowned. “A warning?” Michael smiled. But it didn’t reach his eyes. “Don’t get too attached.” Klay held his gaze. “That’s not really your call.” Michael chuckled quietly. “No.” “But I know her longer than you.” “Maybe.” Michael turned slightly as if preparing to leave. Then he added one last thing. “People like us don’t end well, Kingston.” Klay watched him walk away. The words lingered in the air long after Michael disappeared around the corner. And for the first time since meeting Amara, a small sense of unease crept into Klay’s mind. Like something bigger had just begun. Something none of them could stop.
