Chapter 4: One Signature Changes Everything

1303 Words
The contract lay on the table between them, and Seraphina couldn’t stop staring at the final line. Marriage to Caspian Kingsley. Three words that could save her family. Three words that could destroy the life she had imagined. She had spent the entire night thinking about his offer. She had tried to convince herself it was ridiculous. Impossible. Insane. Yet every time she closed her eyes, she saw her father’s exhausted face. She saw the employees at Whitmore Events waiting anxiously for their salaries. She remembered the bank’s final notice sitting on her father’s desk. And she remembered the humiliation of standing alone at the altar. Nathaniel had walked away from her without hesitation. Caspian was offering her a way forward. But his price was marriage. Seraphina picked up her pen. Her hand trembled. “Are you certain?” Elena asked quietly. They were sitting in Seraphina’s apartment, surrounded by documents. Seraphina looked at her best friend. “No.” Elena’s expression softened. “Then don’t do it.” Seraphina looked down at the contract again. “I don’t have the luxury of making decisions based only on what I want.” “You shouldn’t have to sell your future because Nathaniel betrayed you.” “I’m not selling myself.” Seraphina’s voice was firmer this time. “I’m making a choice.” Elena sighed. “Seraphina…” “I’ve spent my whole life watching my father build Whitmore Events from nothing. I’m not going to sit back and watch it disappear.” She picked up the pen. “If marrying Caspian Kingsley for one year can save my family, then I’ll do it.” Elena stared at her. “One year?” “That’s what the contract says.” “And after that?” Seraphina hesitated. “We walk away.” At least, that was what she believed. She signed her name. Seraphina Whitmore. The moment the ink dried, her life changed. ⸻ Two hours later, she sat across from Caspian Kingsley in his office. He looked at the signed contract without expression. “You read everything?” “Every page.” “You understand the conditions?” “Yes.” “You’re not being forced?” Seraphina met his eyes. “No.” Caspian picked up the contract. For the first time since she had met him, something resembling approval appeared in his eyes. “Good.” He signed his name beneath hers. Caspian Kingsley. Two signatures. One marriage. No love. No promises. Only an agreement. Caspian closed the folder. “Congratulations, Mrs. Kingsley.” Seraphina’s stomach tightened. “Don’t call me that yet.” His eyebrow lifted. “Why?” “Because I’m not your wife yet.” A faint smile appeared. “You will be.” She looked away. “About the money…” “The transfer has already been arranged.” Seraphina looked at him sharply. “Already?” “I don’t make promises I can’t keep.” He slid another document toward her. “Your father’s company will receive the funds by tomorrow morning.” She stared at the document. For the first time in weeks, hope returned to her heart. “Thank you.” Caspian leaned back. “Don’t thank me yet.” Her eyes narrowed. “Why?” “Because this arrangement comes with consequences.” “What kind?” “You’ll become part of my world.” She remained silent. “My family will know about you. The media will know about you. My business associates will know about you.” “I can handle that.” “You haven’t met my family.” “How bad can they be?” Caspian’s expression changed. “Very.” Seraphina almost smiled. “Then I’ll survive.” He studied her for several seconds. “You may be stronger than I expected.” “I’ve had a difficult week.” “That’s not what I mean.” Before she could ask, his assistant entered. “Sir, the announcement has been prepared.” Seraphina’s eyes widened. “Announcement?” Caspian nodded. “The engagement.” “Already?” “We can’t keep a marriage like this secret.” Her heart sank. “What about the media?” “They’ll find out eventually.” Seraphina stood. “I need time.” “You’ll have two days.” “Two days?” “Our engagement will be announced Friday.” She stared at him. Caspian’s voice remained calm. “Welcome to my world, Seraphina.” ⸻ That evening, Seraphina returned home to find her father waiting in the living room. He stood the moment he saw her. “You agreed?” She nodded. Richard’s eyes filled with emotion. “Are you certain?” “I am.” He walked toward her and pulled her into a tight embrace. “I’m sorry.” Seraphina closed her eyes. “For what?” “For putting this burden on you.” She shook her head. “You didn’t.” Richard pulled back. “I know you loved Nathaniel.” Seraphina’s expression hardened. “I did.” “But he’s gone now.” She nodded. “And I’m not going back.” Richard gently touched her cheek. “Then perhaps this is the beginning of something new.” Seraphina wasn’t convinced. She didn’t believe in new beginnings anymore. Not yet. ⸻ Three days later, the news broke. Every major entertainment and business outlet carried the same announcement. BILLIONAIRE CEO CASPIAN KINGSLEY ENGAGED TO ABANDONED BRIDE SERAPHINA WHITMORE. Seraphina stared at the headline in disbelief. There were photographs of her leaving Kingsley Global. Photographs of Caspian entering his car. Speculation spread everywhere. Did Caspian know her before Nathaniel? Was the billionaire planning to steal his rival’s fiancée? Is this a revenge marriage? Her phone exploded with messages. Then came the most painful one. A message from Nathaniel. We need to talk. Seraphina stared at it. Her heart no longer raced at his name. She simply deleted the message. Then another appeared. Please, Seraphina. Just give me one chance to explain. She deleted that one too. She had already given him five years. He wasn’t getting another five minutes. ⸻ Across the city, Nathaniel stared at his phone. “She blocked me.” Vivienne looked up from her coffee. “Good.” Nathaniel frowned. “You don’t understand.” “I understand perfectly.” Vivienne placed her cup down. “She’s marrying Caspian Kingsley.” “Exactly.” “And?” Nathaniel’s jaw tightened. “Caspian isn’t someone you can compete with.” Vivienne’s eyes darkened. “Then don’t compete.” She smiled slowly. “Destroy the marriage before it begins.” ⸻ At Kingsley Global, Caspian stood in his office watching the news. Elias entered. “The announcement has caused quite a reaction.” “I expected it.” “There is one problem.” Caspian turned. “Vivienne Ashcroft has requested a private meeting.” His expression immediately hardened. “Denied.” “She says it’s urgent.” “Still denied.” Elias hesitated. “She claims she knows something about Seraphina.” Caspian’s eyes narrowed. “What?” “She wouldn’t say.” Silence filled the office. Caspian walked toward the window. For the first time, his perfectly controlled expression showed a trace of concern. He had investigated Seraphina thoroughly. Her background was clean. Her business records were legitimate. Her family history was ordinary. But something about Vivienne’s statement bothered him. “Arrange the meeting.” Elias nodded. “Yes, sir.” Caspian looked down at the city. He had entered this arrangement for one reason. Business. Nothing more. Yet somehow… Seraphina Whitmore was already becoming more complicated than he had anticipated. And he had no idea that the woman he was about to marry was carrying secrets even she didn’t know about.
