Anaya offered me breakfast, my preferred breakfast choice of waffles and a strawberry milk shake. Though I didn’t have the appetite for it, I ate it so she wouldn’t feel bad. After all, my problems were not hers to bear.
Her phone rang, she excused herself to answer it. From her sitting room, I could hear her argue with the caller.
A few minutes later she came back and told me she had to leave, and that it was urgent. I told her I was on my way out too. We separated in her driveway.
I didn’t go home right away. I sat in my car outside Anaya’s house, my hands gripping the steering wheel, her words replaying over and over in my head.
What if I wasn’t ready for what the truth was? Lucas loved me, I could swear he did. He had been nothing short of patient with me and my fertility situation. Even the times when I broke down because of all the stress, he would take days off work and spend time with me.
By the time I pulled into the driveway, Lucas’s car was gone. Of course it was.I checked the time.
It was 9:12 AM. I knew he was at work.
I stepped inside quietly, my eyes scanning the house like it might confess something if I looked hard enough. Everything was in place. Nothing out of order.
I entered our bedroom, immediately I laid eyes on the bed, I walked closer, my fingers brushing over the sheets, my mind telling me he brought his mistress when I left the house.
Slowly, I crouched down and lifted the edge of the bed, there was nothing. I exhaled shakily, almost laughing at myself. What was I doing ? I was sure Lucas would have a good explanation for what was going on.
I got into the shower and in fifteen minutes I was all dressed. I had already made up my mind, I was going to follow him throughout his day.
If he wanted to disgrace me, I needed to get ahead of him. I needed evidence to confront him.
His family needed to know the prick they raised for a son. Lucas was forgetting where he came from and I needed to remind him.
My father-in-law was a no-nonsense man. The kind of man who built his entire life on rules that didn’t bend—one man, one woman.
In the forty years he’d been married to Ophelia, he wore his loyalty like a badge of honor. He talked about it often, almost proudly, how he’d never looked at another woman, never needed to.
I used to admire that. Now, it felt like a ticking clock.
Because if I was right ,if what I was seeing wasn’t just fragments twisted by fear and suspicions, he would destroy Lucas completely.
Strip him of his name. His place in the family. Everything he’d built under that legacy would be gone in a second.
Lucas made a mistake and I needed to protect him from the media and his family. I loved my husband and I wasn’t ready to give up on him.
By noon, I was in my car again, packed opposite the office building. I parked far enough not to be noticed, my sunglasses hiding more than just my eyes.
Our employees would notice me in a blink. Everyone in the company knew my car. Who wouldn’t notice a grey Lamborghini packed outside the office ?
I told myself I was crazy for this. I was about to reverse my car back into the streets when I saw her, Tina. Someone dropped her off at work and I was certain I saw her blow the driver a kiss.
Whoever the driver was, she clearly didn’t want anyone seeing him. The car packed two blocks away from the office building, and when she got out she scanned the area before blowing the kiss.
I felt my heart boil. Which secretary comes to work at 10? Hours after her boss had arrived.
I saw her wait at the entrance of the office. A few minutes later Lucas came out. She smiled and dropped the phone she had been browsing through in her purse.
He gave her his suitcase and they exchanged smiles. I leaned forward slightly, my fingers tightening around the steering wheel.
The valet brought his car almost immediately and they got into the car and sped down towards me. My heart slammed violently against my ribs as I saw them coming down. I lowered myself into my seat and watched the car speed by without noticing me.l
I didn’t think. I followed, keeping my distance, my hands trembling slightly as I tailed them through traffic. My mind raced, every possible outcome crashing into the next.
They didn’t drive far. Just fifteen minutes.
And when they finally pulled over, My breath caught in my throat. It wasn’t a hotel or a private mall, It was a café. A café? How could he be so stupid as to bring his mistress to a public place like this ?
I parked further back, my pulse roaring in my ears as I watched her step out of the car, smoothing down her dress like she was used to this.
She walked inside without hesitation. I stared at the entrance, my heart sinking deeper into my chest.
Then, my phone buzzed. It was Lucas
“Hey, how are you feeling now ? Make no plans for dinner, I’ll pick you by 6. Love you”
Me from the day before would’ve squealed, almost rubbing my head on the wall at the sight of this text. But now, I was fully aware.
I was aware he wanted to eat her for lunch, and later have me for dinner. What a selfish bastard.
