Chapter Nine Damn it. Eliza had forgotten that Freddie was coming by to collect his paycheck that morning. Right, no reason to panic. Don’t let him see that he still gets to you. Just give him the check and send him on his way. “One second,” Eliza said as she retreated into the house to pick up her checkbook. Freddie stood outside the door awkwardly, but she wasn’t about to let him into her home again.
