Chapter 9

Kyra did the best she could to stay under the radar at school the next day, she went as far as even eating her lunch at her locker so she didn’t risk another fight with Amber. When Kyra finished her lunch she gathered her thing for her science class, Allie skipped up to her with a smile. “So you have any plans tonight?” Kyra looked at her with a raised eyebrow, “No, should I?” Allie nodded, “You should come to the club with me, every Friday night everyone goes to the nightclub, we dance, we play bowling, we sing karaoke, we get s**t face.” Kyra closed her locker and gave Allie a smirk, “I don’t know, I’m not one for crowds.” Allie hugged Kyra’s arm, “Please it will be fun, I promise I won’t leave your side the whole night.” Kyra smiled, “Maybe, I’ll have to ask my aunt and uncle first.” Allie jumped up and down, “Ok, it starts at 6 and goes all night. It’s so much fun trust me.” Kyra shook her head and walked down the hall to class, she walked to the back of the class and sat down. Kyle walked up and leaned on her desk, “So tonight a few friends and I are going to the nightclub downtown, I was wondering if you’d like to join us. You know show you around a little bit, I know all the nice spots to ‘hang out’.” He winked at her, Kyra tried to keep her giggles down, she thought it was so funny how Kyle thought he was so smooth and cool. “I don’t know I’ll have to ask my aunt and uncle. I’m grounded from yesterday’s events.” Kyle nodded, “I understand, well it starts at 6. If you do make it, I’ll be in the back.” Kyle smiled and walked to his seat. Kyra scoffed and grabbed her science book, “Ok class today we will be starting Genetics and Lineage, the science of werewolf inheritance, including dominant and recessive traits.” Everyone opens their notebooks and got their pens ready. “First we will go over Dominant vs. Recessive Genes. Studying how werewolf traits are passed down, focusing on whether being a werewolf is dominant (one parent needs to be a werewolf) or recessive (both parents must carry the gene). A dominant gene is one that expresses its trait even if only one copy (from one parent) is present. For example, if a parent passes down a dominant trait, it will likely manifest in the child. For example In humans, traits like dark hair or brown eyes are often dominant. Recessive genes require two copies (one from each parent) to express their traits. If only one copy is present, the dominant gene “masks” the recessive one. For example traits like blue eyes or red hair are recessive, meaning they only appear if both parents contribute the recessive gene.” The teacher wrote everything on the board, everyone copied it. Kyra signed and looked out the window, she already knew this stuff from her last school. “Now Werewolf traits, like the ability to transform and heightened senses, might be carried by dominant genes. This would explain why offspring with even one werewolf parent often inherit werewolf characteristics. The werewolf gene might “override” normal human traits due to its dominant nature. Recessive werewolf genes could result in milder traits, such as enhanced strength or senses, without full transformations.” One student raised their hand, “Mr. Burka, does that mean a werewolf can mate with a human?” The teacher nodded, “Yes, yes they can. It isn’t unusual for a werewolf to be mated to a human, but it is discouraged or forbidden in some packs for a werewolf to take a human as a mate. From a biological perspective, a human mate would not carry werewolf genes, meaning any offspring would inherit either a diluted version of werewolf traits or none at all (if werewolf genes are recessive).” Everyone wrote down what the teacher said, then Allie asked a question that made Kyra’s body freeze in fear. “What about a werewolf and a vampire? Could they mate?” Everyone laughed, “Are you kidding? Who would want to mate with a vampire?” Amber yelled out. Mr. Burka shushed the class, “No class that’s actually a really good question. No werewolves and vampires cannot mate and here’s why, Opposite Genetic Makeup werewolves and vampires have drastically different genetic structures. Werewolves are living, warm-blooded creatures with accelerated healing and enhanced physical traits tied to a living biological system. Vampires, however, are undead, with no circulatory system, and their genetic makeup is “frozen” in time due to their transformation. This makes combining their DNA nearly impossible. Reproductive Systems: Werewolves are fertile beings, capable of reproduction, whereas vampires are traditionally depicted as sterile. Vampirism halts biological processes such as cell division and reproduction, rendering vampires incapable of contributing viable genetic material.” Kyle yelled out, “Not to mention they’re our enemies, no one in their right mind would want to mate with a vampire. Even if it was possible.” Mr. Burka waved his chalk, “Well not necessarily, if such a hybrid were to exist, it would likely possess a volatile mix of traits. Werewolf Strengths: Supernatural physical strength, heightened senses, and accelerated healing. Vampire Powers: Immortality, hypnotic abilities, and enhanced agility. They would be the perfect weapon, but their biology would likely be unstable, with constant conflict between the werewolf’s vitality and the vampire’s undead essence. Along with unpredictable transformations, potentially stuck between partial forms or unable to fully shift into a wolf. Such hybrids would be extremely rare and feared, and would be seen as either abominations or miracles, depending on their society.” Amber spoke again, “I bet it would be hideous, half Vampire half werewolf. Gross.” Mr. Burka shook his head, “Not necessarily, a hybrid would likely embody the most striking and powerful traits of both species, creating a being of both primal ferocity and refined elegance.” The bell rang, “Ok class, before you leave I am assigning a Research Project, Study ancient werewolf lineages and their influence on modern packs. Explore differences in werewolf traits based on geography or environmental conditions. You have until the end of the season to get it done, enjoy your weekend and see most of you at the club tonight.” Kyra quickly gathered her things and ran out the door, talking about hybrids made her heart race. Of course Allie would be the one to ask questions about it, she was a nice girl but asks the wrong questions. “Hey so I was wondering if you’re able to go out tonight do you want to spend the night over at my house after. We’d probably be leaving the club really late and I live really close to it.” Allie asked running up to Kyra’s side. Kyra hesitated, she’s never spent the night at someone’s house before. “Uh, I don’t know. I don’t really do slumber parties, I don’t really even know if I can go tonight. I’m grounded after yesterday, so.” Allie pouted her lower lip, “Please, I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I don’t really have many friends. Honestly you’re the only one who really talks to me.” Kyra saw the sadness in her eyes, she felt bad. Kyra sighed in defeat, “Fine, IF I can go, I’ll spend the night.” Allie squeaked with joy and hugged Kyra, Kyra just stood there processing what was going on. She wasn’t a touchy, feely person. They walked out of the school, Allie saw her parents. “Hopefully I’ll see you tonight!” Allie jumped in her car and left, Kyra was about to start walking home when she saw her uncle pull up in their SUV. He rolled down his window, “Want a left before I head to work?” Kyra shrugged, “Sure.” She climbed in the car. “So how was your second day of school, no fighting?” He asked raising his eyebrows. Kyra scoffed, “I kept my head down like you asked, um so I guess there’s this nightclub party that everyone’s going to and my ‘new friend’ wanted me to go then spend the night at her house.” Theodore glanced at her, “Do you want to go? You don’t really like crowds or people touching you. Those clubs get pretty close, if you know what I mean.” Kyra shrugged, “I don’t know, not really but Allie made me feel bad by saying I was her only friend and stuff.” Theodore shrugged, “If you want to go you can just be careful, we want you to be safe but we also want you to try and have a normal teenage life.” Kyra bit her lip, deep down she did want to go and be a teenager. “Ok I’ll go, thank you Uncle Teddy.” Theodore smiled, “No problem, your Aunt and I will be working tonight but we’ll have our phones on us if anything should happen. Try and have a good time, but not too good of a time.” They pulled up to the house, Kyra giggled and gave Theodore a kiss on the cheek. “Don’t worry Uncle Teddy, I can take care of myself.”
