Episode 11: The Queen's Trap

603 Words
Night slid over Lagos like a silk veil hiding knives. Adira’s penthouse lights burned through the darkness — gold against the storm. Inside, she prepared her battlefield. Every detail had been arranged: encrypted files, decoy documents, a listening device disguised as art. If Damian thought he was the only player who could manipulate, he was about to learn otherwise. Clara entered quietly. “Everything is set, ma’am. The leak will trace back to him if he moves tonight.” Adira nodded. “Good. And make sure the press gets the Kane story by morning.” Clara hesitated. “You’re playing both sides?” Adira smiled faintly. “I’m not playing. I’m winning.” The elevator chimed — Damian stepped out, calm and sharp in a black suit that absorbed the light. He looked around, amused. “Still dramatic as ever.” Adira motioned to the chair opposite her. “Sit. Let’s talk business.” He sat, eyes scanning her face. “You’ve changed.” “Change is survival.” “And lies?” he asked. “Strategy.” He chuckled. “Then here’s my strategy. Kane Industries moves their offshore assets at midnight tomorrow. If we intercept the transfer, you’ll ruin Leonard permanently. But I want half.” Her gaze flicked up, cool and steady. “Half of what’s already mine?” Damian leaned forward. “Don’t pretend you’re not still my wife, Adanna.” The room went still. For a heartbeat, the past threatened to break the surface — stolen kisses, betrayal, the fire that consumed them both. But Adira recovered first. “You died with that name,” she said softly. “So did I.” Damian smirked. “Then why does part of you still look at me like you’re afraid I’ll disappear again?” Her jaw tightened. “I’m not afraid of ghosts.” “Good,” he said, standing. “Because this one’s about to haunt you.” He walked out, leaving the faint scent of smoke and something darker behind. As soon as the door closed, Clara appeared. “Did he take the bait?” Adira opened her laptop, fingers flying. “Check the drive he touched. If he connects to that data, our trace will lead us straight to his network.” “And then what?” Adira’s eyes glimmered. “Then I burn his empire to ash — the way he did mine.” At the Kane mansion, Leonard stared out the window, whiskey in hand. He hadn’t slept since Tasha’s call. Adira had a husband. Alive. He didn’t know what scared him more — her secrets, or the way he still couldn’t stop thinking about her. Tasha entered, dressed impeccably as always. “You look worried,” she said, half-mocking. He didn’t answer. She poured herself a drink. “You know, Leonard, maybe she’s not your problem anymore. Maybe she’s your punishment.” He turned sharply. “What do you mean?” Tasha smiled. “Because you fell for her lies. And now they’re coming for both of us.” Adira stood by her window, phone in hand, eyes fixed on the city below. She was waiting for a single message — confirmation that Damian had taken the bait. At 12:01 a.m., her phone vibrated. “Access detected. Trace complete. Source confirmed — D. Cole Network.” A cold satisfaction spread through her. But just as she turned to tell Clara, the screen flickered. A new message appeared. “Nice try, sweetheart. But I built the trap first.” Her blood ran cold. The lights in the penthouse flickered — then went out completely.
