She hoped he would blow his own hand off, but he let it fly at what must have been the last possible second, and it detonated just above the water level. The noise would have been deafening, even in an open field. Trapped by the walls of the quarry in the dense woods, the noise echoed and reverberated. She could feel the thump in her chest and stomach. Reggie wasn’t done with his surprises. He pulled out a pistol from the back of his jeans and aimed it at a beer can next to Brian. Brian’s eyes widened, and he scrambled away. Not surprisingly, Reggie’s shot went wild. They all ducked. Where the bullet landed after its ricochet off the rocks, Katy wasn’t certain, but she thought it smacked into a tree to her right.
