Chapter 4

1464 Words
Chandra, who had been silent for a long time, turned her gaze from Amanda, who was standing there glaring at Carter with resentment, to the woman her son claimed was pregnant. She then asked with a serious tone and expression. "Are you pregnant with my son?" Mary, the Public Relations woman Carter brought along, sat frozen, feeling like she was walking on thin ice. When she glanced up and saw Carter's fierce look, as if forcing her not to tell the truth, Mary quickly lowered her head again, her eyes burning and her hands sweaty. But when she heard Chandra repeat the question sternly... "Well?" She then looked up to see the middle-aged couple looking at her with the same piercing gaze as their son, which frightened Mary into telling the truth. "No, I'm not pregnant." As soon as she said this, Carter raised his hand to his forehead, realizing that luck was not on his side today. Meanwhile, Amanda stood there smirking with satisfaction that fate was not favoring someone as selfish as him. Peter and Chandra were quite angry when they realized their son had hired another woman to lie, but they tried to keep their feelings to themselves, not wanting to scold their son in front of others, as Carter was no longer a child and deserved respect. Then Chandra calmly told Mary, "You can leave now." Mary wasted no time in respectfully greeting the two elders with a bow before walking out without looking at Carter at all. After Mary left, Kim, who had been watching the events unfold, moved to whisper in Amanda's ear. "That's so messed up, hiring another woman to pretend to be you. You have to make him take responsibility, Amanda." "Come sit here." Amanda hadn't yet responded to Kim because Chandra had already pointed to the sofa next to Carter. She then walked over to sit on the sofa and respectfully greeted the two elders with a bow, following the manners instilled in her since childhood. "Hello." With piercing eyes fixed on her, Amanda remained composed, while Kim moved to stand back and watch from a distance, as it wasn't her business. Once Amanda was seated, Chandra turned to her husband for a moment, then asked Amanda with a calm expression. "What's your name?" While observing her demeanor for any signs of deceit. "Amanda," she replied clearly and confidently, which reassured Chandra that she wasn't lying. As for Carter, seeing that it was no longer his concern, he told his mother with a displeased look. "If you want to talk to this girl, go ahead. I'm going out for a drink," Carter said as he was about to get up from the sofa, but his mother stopped him. "Carter, you need to stay because this is your issue." "What does this have to do with me?" Carter replied irritably, while Amanda, who had been listening, couldn't hold back any longer and interjected. "How can it not concern you when you got me pregnant?" "Where's the proof that I got you pregnant?" Carter turned to shout at Amanda, his face flushed with anger at the trouble she was causing him, even though he was sure he hadn't done it. Amanda, seeing this, didn't back down, pointing at her stomach and retorting back at Carter. "Here's the proof, right here in my belly." "You probably slept with someone else and are trying to pin it on me." "If I were pregnant by someone else, I wouldn't be here asking you to take responsibility. You're more cowardly and irresponsible than a dog." Amanda and Carter argued fiercely, neither willing to back down, their eyes locked as if they were ready to fight to the death. Meanwhile, Chandra and Peter sat quietly, listening and trying to grasp the situation. "Then just go back and stop demanding anything from me," Carter said, clenching his fists at the other's selfishness. Amanda took a deep breath and spoke in a calm voice. "Honestly, are you really a man? Didn't your parents teach you anything? Why don't you take responsibility for your actions?" Her words hit not only Carter but also his parents, who were startled by the accusation. Chandra then addressed Amanda... "Hey, watch your language," Chandra said, prompting Amanda to quickly apologize to both parents. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you both, but everything I said is true. If you don't believe me, I'm willing to take a DNA test. If it's not his child, you can send me to jail." Amanda spoke as she placed a pregnancy certificate on the coffee table. Chandra reached out to take the test results while listening to what her son had to say. "Hmph! Then go to jail, no need to wait for the test, because it's definitely not my child," Carter said with a mocking face, smirking at Amanda. The small woman looked at him steadily before responding with words that made him uneasy. "Then if it is your child, would you be willing to go to jail?" Kim clapped her hands with a loud smack, more thrilled than cheering at a boxing match, but when Peter and Chandra glanced at her, she quickly put her hands down and stood quietly. Carter, upon hearing this, didn't dare to respond and just stared intensely at Amanda. Even though he was 99% sure the child wasn't his, he didn't want to gamble with that 1%. Because if that 1% chance turned out to be true, he'd be in deep trouble if he didn't keep his word... Chandra and Peter, worried the situation might escalate, wanted to resolve it swiftly. After listening to what had happened and seeing Amanda's confident demeanor, the middle-aged couple decided to believe her for now, pending the DNA test results. Although Amanda seemed serious and not deceitful as their son claimed, they couldn't fully trust her, as she seemed quite formidable to confront Carter at their home like this. Chandra then spoke with a calm demeanor... "If you're sure my son is the father, I'll take responsibility until the DNA results are out." "And how will I know you're not lying?" "Then, while waiting for the test, you can move in here. Don't worry, if it's truly my grandchild, I'll make my son take responsibility." "Mom!" "Why? If it's really your child, won't you be man enough to take responsibility?" Peter couldn't resist commenting on Carter's shocked reaction. Carter, hearing his father's taunting words, quickly defended himself. "No! I was just calling out to Mom," he muttered to himself. "I don't love her, so how can I accept it?" But the person sitting next to him heard it clearly, so Amanda spoke up. "I'm asking you to take responsibility, not to love me." At her words, they exchanged sharp glances before Carter spoke loudly, his eyes never leaving Amanda. "If it's really my child and not someone else's, I'm man enough to take responsibility." Then he pushed himself up from the sofa and left the house to drink with friends, with his parents watching him with expressionless faces until he was out of sight. When only Amanda was left in the house, Chandra spoke to her in a normal tone, her eyes fixed on Amanda. "You can move in whenever you're ready." "Okay," Amanda looked at the two elders, pressed her hands together in a respectful wai, and expressed her gratitude sincerely. "Thank you for understanding me." Chandra didn't respond; she just sat with her arms crossed, watching Amanda, unlike Peter, who nodded slightly and then got up from the sofa to go upstairs to rest, as today had been mentally exhausting at both work and home. Seeing that everything was settled, Amanda respectfully bowed to Chandra again and said, "I'll take my leave now." Then she walked over to Kim, who was waiting, and they left the house. Once they passed through the large door, Kim quickly looked back, and seeing no one around, said with satisfaction, "That jerk just went completely quiet." Amanda didn't respond, as her mind was occupied with the recent events. If Carter's parents hadn't understood and accepted, it would have been hard to resolve this. "So, what's your next move? Are you moving in here?" "Yeah, I've come this far, so why should I struggle alone?" "Great, at least you should get some money for that jerk's big mouth and selfishness." "Exactly." Amanda walked with Kim towards the gate with a smile on her face, feeling satisfied for having beaten someone as selfish as Carter. As they passed through the gate to the front of the house, Amanda saw Carter standing with his arms crossed, leaning against his car, glaring at her with resentment. She felt a bit nervous but kept her cool.
