Chapter 9

763 Words
When Amanda walked into the house, Mildred, who was holding a mop and a bucket, came down from the second floor and saw her. She excitedly asked, “How did it go? Is it a girl or a boy?” “I don't know yet. It's just my first prenatal visit,” Amanda replied with a smile before turning to the side when she heard Aunt Sari speak up. “You really don't know much, do you?” “Well, I've never been pregnant before, Aunt Sari.” While listening to the two of them talk, Amanda saw Aunt Sari holding vegetables, so she walked into the kitchen to ask her, “Aunt Sari, are you going to cook dinner now?” “No, I'm just preparing.” “What time will you cook, Aunt Sari? I'll come and help out.” “Around four or five in the evening. You can go rest upstairs first. When I start cooking, I'll have Mildred call you.” Since Amanda had expressed her interest in helping since yesterday, Sari didn't want to refuse. “Okay.” Amanda then went upstairs to rest, barely able to keep her eyes open from sleepiness. When she reached the second floor and was about to pass Carter's bedroom, suddenly the door opened, and she glanced over to see him standing with his arms crossed, watching her. She chose to ignore him and prepared to continue walking, but... “In the evening, my friends are coming over for drinks. Don't come downstairs.” “What does that have to do with me? If you want to drink, go ahead.” “I just don't want my friends to see a woman like you in the house.” His demeaning words made Amanda clench her fists tightly as her beautiful eyes looked at Carter's mocking face before he slammed the door shut in her face. Amanda took a deep breath to steady her emotions. She then chose to ignore it, went into her room, and took a refreshing shower before lying down on the bed. She gently rubbed her smooth, white belly, her face full of happiness as she thought of the little one inside. Soon, she fell asleep... Splash! In the evening, while sleeping in her room, Amanda was startled awake by the sound of someone jumping into the water and laughter. Groggily, she got up from the bed and walked to the sliding glass window. She saw Carter and his friends having a poolside party. Amanda stood watching for a moment, then prepared to look away from the scene below, but her eyes caught one of Carter's friends floating in the water, looking at her. Meanwhile, Carter, after getting out of the pool where he had been cooling off with Cairo, went to grab a glass of alcohol. He glanced at his friend Dylan, who was lying on a poolside bed, kissing his wife. Seeing this, he felt like splashing water to make them go sweet-talk somewhere else. Soon, he heard Cairo speak up... “Hey, Carter, the pretty one was sneaking a peek at me swimming.” At Cairo's teasing words, Carter looked in the direction Cairo indicated and saw Amanda watching them swim. He chuckled softly but didn't respond. “Is she living in your house now?” "Did you see her? If you did, then she's here." "Come on, I asked nicely. Can't you answer nicely?" Carter ignored the complaint, set his drink down on the table, grabbed a towel to sling over his shoulder, and told his friends, "I'm going to shower," and immediately headed towards the house. "Oh, you're done playing already?" Even though he heard Cairo ask, he didn't bother to respond. When he got to the second floor, he saw Amanda coming out of her room and blocked her path, asking with a stern face, "Where are you going?" "Downstairs." "What did I tell you? Can't you understand?" He raised his thick, dark eyebrows questioningly, arms crossed, staring at her without looking away. Amanda took a deep breath to calm herself, tired of his demanding nature, and replied calmly, "Go drink with your friends. I'm going downstairs to help Aunt Sari with dinner." "Huh! You can cook?" "I'm not just sitting around waiting to be served like you do." With that, Amanda started to walk past Carter to go downstairs, but he grabbed her arm and pulled her closer, speaking through clenched teeth, "You've got a sharp tongue. Do I need to shut you up?" Then he led her into his bedroom.
