Chapter 11

955 Words
On Amanda's side, when she entered the kitchen, she helped Aunt Sari and Mildred prepare dinner... "I didn't think you were this good at cooking, Miss Amanda," Aunt Sari said as she watched Amanda skillfully season the food in the meat, unable to hold back her praise because it's rare to see young people cooking like this. "I used to cook for my mom every day, so I learned how to do it." "You're really good." "Thank you. Aunt Sari, could you please not call me 'Miss'? You can call me Amanda or just 'kid'. I'm asking you, please." Noticing that Aunt Sari was uncomfortable with the formality, Amanda asked her to just call her Amanda or 'kid', to which Aunt Sari reluctantly agreed. "Alright." "Thank you." Amanda smiled at Aunt Sari and then continued cooking until Mildred walked into the kitchen and asked, "Aunt Sari, are the French fries all gone?" "Just a little left. Why?" "Mr. Carter asked to fry more." "Check the fridge to see if there's enough left." As soon as Aunt Sari finished speaking, Mildred went to open the fridge. Seeing that there were only a few French fries left, she said, "There won't be enough to eat, Aunt." "Then you should drive to buy some at the entrance of the village." "Okay, I'll hurry and go first. Please fry the rest for me, Aunt." After speaking, Mildred left the kitchen, while Aunt Sari quickly fried the remaining French fries to take to Carter and his friends so they wouldn't run out. Noticing that Aunt Sari was busy and having nothing else to do, Amanda offered to take the French fries to Carter and his friends without giving it much thought. Amanda walked with the plate of potatoes to the front of the house. Just as she was about to step through the door, she saw Carter walking into the house. She stopped and looked at him with a calm expression and asked, "Where are you taking the French fries?" "I'm bringing them to you, obviously." "Who asked you to bring them to me?" "Do I need someone to tell me to give it to you?" Amanda asked, looking puzzled by his words. Carter didn't reply but instead grabbed the plate of French fries from Amanda and firmly instructed, "Go back inside the house and don't come out." Carter then walked off with the plate of French fries to join his friends by the pool. Meanwhile, Amanda went back inside, went upstairs to shower as the sun was setting, and she had nothing else to do... After showering, she put on a t-shirt and long pants and went downstairs. When Chandra and Peter returned home, they sat waiting for Amanda, whom Aunt Sari mentioned was showering, at the dining table. Soon, they saw her coming down the stairs, and Chandra politely called, "Come have dinner." "Sure," Amanda quickly walked down the stairs to sit at the dining table. She ate quietly with the homeowners as she wasn't familiar with them yet and listened to the couple's conversation in silence. "Is Carter not eating?" "No, he's drinking with his friends by the pool." "And what about Zena?" "Stayed at a friend's condo since last night and hasn't returned yet." "Oh, those kids..." From what Amanda heard, if she had children like these two, she'd probably be quite worried, as the siblings were rarely home. If someone said they didn't have children, she'd believe it. "Did you have your prenatal check-up today?" "I did." "What did the doctor say?" Chandra asked Amanda with a neutral expression, then took a bite of the curry. As she tasted it, her eyebrows furrowed because the flavor was different from usual. However, she didn't ask Aunt Sari anything yet, as she was waiting for Amanda's response. "The baby is healthy." Chandra nodded in response to Amanda before turning to ask Aunt Sari with a curious look, "Aunt Sari, did you buy the meal from the market? The taste is unfamiliar." "No, Amanda made it." When Aunt Sari finished speaking, Amanda noticed Chandra looking at her and directly asked, "Is the taste okay?" "The taste is good. I didn't expect you could make it." "My mom taught me how to cook," she replied, feeling a sense of relief because she wasn't confident in her cooking skills, since she hadn't cooked much since her mother passed away. Because of her busy work schedule, she usually bought food instead. As she smiled and answered, she heard Peter say, "You're quite skilled." She glanced at Carter's father, who was eating with a calm expression, and responded politely, "Thank you." Then the three of them continued eating... Meanwhile, after drinking a lot, Carter needed to use the bathroom, so he walked into the house. As he crossed the threshold, he saw Amanda sitting and eating with his parents, smiling and chatting, which annoyed him with her seemingly ingratiating demeanor. He let out a small chuckle, walked to the dining table with his hands in his pockets, grabbed a fried chicken wing, and stood there eating, his eyes fixed on Amanda. Until his mother spoke up, "If you're going to eat, sit down and eat properly, Carter." "Nah, the vibe at the table isn't right. I can't sit and eat," he said, then gave Amanda a teasing smile before heading to the bathroom. His actions and words prompted his father to reprimand him, "This kid really has no respect." Frustrated by his son's behavior, which mirrored Amanda's annoyance with Carter, she chose to ignore it and continued eating. Once finished, she helped Aunt Sari and Mildred clear the dishes and food into the kitchen. Chandra and Peter watched quietly from a distance.
