Chapter 2

"Miss Turner," he continued, "I have a proposition for you." Emma swallowed hard, her mind swirling with a mix of anxiety and curiosity. "A proposition?" Alexander nodded, his expression unreadable. "I have suddenly found myself in a position where I need to have the public image of a stable, family-oriented man. All you need to know is that it is crucial for my reputation and my company." Her heartbeat seemed to slow down, but her mind was still a whirlwind of confusion. "Okay, what do you need from me?" He leaned closer, his presence commanding and his voice steady. "I need you to marry me for a year. In return, I will pay off your family's debt." Emma's breath caught in her throat. "Marry you?" He continued, his tone matter-of-fact and unwavering. "It's a mutually beneficial arrangement. I understand your family is facing significant financial difficulties. I can help you with that, and in return, I need to portray the outlook of a stable, family-oriented man." The room seemed to shrink around her as the weight of his words sank in. Emma stared at him, trying to comprehend the enormity of what he was asking. "You want me to pretend to be your wife?" "Not just pretend," Alexander replied, his eyes locking onto hers. "We need to be convincing. We’ll get married, you will live with me, attend public events as my wife, and play the part. In return, I will pay off all your debts, cover your mother’s medical expenses, and provide a substantial sum for your family’s future. This isn't just a facade for the public; it needs to hold up under scrutiny. It's essential for both of us." Emma's mind raced, the proposition both shocking and bewildering. "But... why me? Why do you think I can do this?" He softened slightly, a hint of sincerity breaking through his commanding demeanor.” You have no connections in my world, I need someone who can be discreet and trustworthy, who won’t question the arrangement. Someone who needs this as much as I do. Emma bit her lip, her mind racing. This was insane. "And what about love? Affection? This sounds... cold." Alexander's expression hardened. "This is not about love. It's about necessity. We both get something we need." A silence fell between them, heavy with tension. Emma's thoughts drifted to her family, to the crushing debt that had loomed over them for years. She had to make a decision that could change everything. "I need time to think about this," she said finally, her voice trembling. Alexander nodded. "You have five days. I'll expect your answer then." As she left the table to continue with her work for the day, her mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. She walked back to the shelf behind the counter in a daze, barely registering her surroundings. She opened the envelope again and glossed through the documents, reading the terms and conditions. It was all there in black and white: the financial benefits, the responsibilities, and the timelines. It felt surreal, like she was reading a script for a movie rather than her own life. The weight of the decision pressed down on her. She needed to talk to someone, to get some perspective. She called Lisa, her voice trembling. “Hey, can we meet up? I need to talk to you about something.” “Of course,” Lisa replied. “I’ll be at the coffee shop in a few minutes?” “Perfect. See you in a bit.” After 5 minutes, Lisa got to the shop, immediately noticed her distracted state, and pulled her aside. "Emma, are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost," Lisa said, concern etched on her face. Emma sighed, her shoulders slumping. "I just had the most bizarre meeting. Alexander Blake wants me to marry him." Lisa's eyes widened in shock. "What? That tech billionaire guy? Are you serious?" Emma nodded, her expression a mix of disbelief and anxiety. "It's to clear my family's debt. But it's... it's so much more complicated than that." Lisa grabbed her hands, her grip firm. “You’re strong, Emma. You’ve always done what’s best for your family. Whatever you decide, I’ll support you.” Emma's eyes filled with tears. “Thanks, Lisa. I needed to hear that.” For the next few days, Emma struggled with the decision. She weighed the benefits of clearing her family's debt against the unsettling idea of entering a loveless marriage. She confided in Lisa, who tried to offer support and advice, but ultimately, the decision was hers alone. Meanwhile, Alexander was lost in thought, his mind drifting back to the choices that had led him to this moment. A fateful decision he and his then-fiancée had made a few years ago now threatened to come back and haunt him, jeopardizing everything he had built. "I just hope she agrees to this," He muttered under his breath. The night before she was supposed to meet Alexander again, Emma sat alone at the kitchen table, the documents spread out before her. Her mother and brother was asleep, and the house was quiet. She read through the terms again, trying to imagine what her life would be like if she accepted Alexander’s proposition. She thought about her parents, about the sacrifices they had made for her. This could be her chance to finally give something back. The next morning, Emma arrived at the coffee shop a little late, her stomach in knots. Alexander was already there, waiting for her. He stood up as she approached, his expression unreadable. "Have you made your decision?" he asked, his tone even. Emma took a deep breath, her hands trembling. "Yes. I'll do it." Just as the words left her mouth, the door to the coffee shop opened, and a woman walked in. She was stunning, with an air of confidence and elegance that made Emma feel small in comparison. The woman glanced around the shop before her eyes landed on Alexander. "Well, well, well," the woman said with a mocking smile. "Isn't it a surprise to see Alexander the Great in a lowly coffee shop?" Alexander's expression tightened, and Emma felt a chill run down her spine. The woman turned her gaze to Emma, her smile turning into a smirk. "And who might this be?" she asked, her tone dripping with condescension. Emma swallowed hard, realizing that she was stepping into a world far more complicated and dangerous than she had ever imagined.
