Chapter 3

Emma's heart pounded as she nervously left the table after the brief and unsettling encounter with Miss Victoria. Her mind was racing, trying to process the whirlwind of events that had just transpired. As she returned to her duty post behind the counter, she could feel Alexander's eyes on her. His ex-fiancée’s mocking words and belittling smile lingered in her mind, making her feel small and out of place. Alexander quickly dismissed Victoria, his expression unreadable. He stood up from the chair and walked towards Emma, his steps purposeful and confident. "I'll be in touch with you," he said, his voice firm but devoid of warmth. Emma nodded, her hands trembling slightly as she tried to focus on her work. The next day, Alexander contacted her, and soon, they were making a public announcement about their engagement. The news spread quickly, stirring mixed reactions from the public. Emma found herself breaking the news to her mother. "Mom, my...boyfriend has finally proposed to me," she said, trying to sound as convincing as possible. Her mother’s eyes lit up with hope and joy, a smile spreading across her face. "Oh, Emma, that's wonderful!" she exclaimed, her voice trembling with emotion. "This is exactly what we've been praying for." Emma tried to match her mother's enthusiasm, forcing a smile as her mother reached out and hugged her tightly. The embrace was warm, filled with the depth of her mother's hopes and dreams for her. Emma felt tears prick at her own eyes as her mother whispered, "Congratulations, my dear. I'm so happy for you." “I believe that this would bring a positive change to our lives.” she said, her voice filled with conviction. "I just know it." Emma nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. "Yes, Mom. I hope so too," she whispered, the words feeling heavy with the weight of her deception. Soon, Emma was swept into a new world. She attended parties, galas, fundraisers, and project commissioning events with Alexander. The pace at which her life was changing left her breathless. She felt like a puppet, moving through these events with a practiced smile plastered on her face. Alexander treated their interactions like business transactions, his demeanor cold and distant. He flashed fake smiles and maintained a professional facade, making Emma feel even more isolated. One evening, they attended a family friend’s wedding. The event was grand, filled with New York's elite. Emma's heart raced as she was introduced to Alexander's mother for the first time. Mrs. Blake was a proud and imposing woman, her gaze sharp and critical. It was clear that she preferred Victoria for her son and made no effort to hide her disdain for Emma. "Well, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Emma," Mrs. Blake said, her tone dripping with condescension. Emma forced a smile, feeling terribly belittled inside. She struggled to respond, "Thank you, ma'am. You look lovely this evening." Mrs. Blake's lips curled into a disdainful smile. "Of course, I wouldn't expect anything less, coming from you," she replied, her words laced with derision. Emma felt a wave of humiliation wash over her. She noticed Victoria in the background, smirking and laughing mockingly. Her presence felt like a dark cloud hovering over Emma, intensifying her discomfort. Emma took a deep breath, trying to steady herself, but the sting of Mrs. Blake's words and Victoria's silent mockery left her feeling small and out of place in the grand hall. Alexander noticed the tension and stepped in to defend her. "Mother, Emma is my fiancée, and I expect you to treat her with respect," he said firmly. He then took Emma's hand and led her away from the uncomfortable situation, trying to cheer her up with small talk and gentle reassurances. Despite his efforts, Emma couldn't shake the feeling of inadequacy and the emotional turmoil she was experiencing. Back at her apartment, Emma confided in her friend Lisa. "It’s all happening so fast, Lisa. One moment I’m working at the coffee shop, and the next, I’m engaged to a billionaire. It’s overwhelming," she said, her voice trembling. Lisa listened intently, offering words of comfort and support. "You’re strong, Emma. You can handle this. Just remember to stay true to yourself," she advised. Emma nodded, but inside, she felt a growing sense of isolation. Alexander's distant behavior and the constant scrutiny from his world made her feel like an outsider. She yearned for genuine connection and wondered how long she could keep up the facade. The wedding preparations began immediately, each event meticulously planned and executed. Emma struggled to fit into the requirements of her new world, feeling out of place in designer gowns and sophisticated gatherings. Emma's days were a whirlwind of fittings, meetings with wedding planners, and attending public events with Alexander. Each occasion felt like a test, her every move and gesture scrutinized by those around her. The stress of maintaining the facade weighed heavily on her, and she found herself missing the simplicity of her former life. Alexander, on the other hand, was equally burdened. The need to maintain the pretense of their relationship, combined with the threat of his past mistakes resurfacing, kept him on edge. He was determined to ensure that no one uncovered the true nature of their marriage. The stress manifested in his work, his interactions with Emma, and the constant vigilance he maintained. One day, while Emma was being fitted for her wedding dress, Alexander sat in his office at the top of a towering skyscraper, the city skyline stretching out before him. His office was a sanctuary, a place where he could momentarily escape the chaos of his personal life. As he worked, he couldn’t shake the feeling that the walls were closing in on him. His concentration was shattered when the door to his office burst open. Victoria strode in, her presence commanding and uninvited. Alexander's secretary, flustered and apologetic, followed her in. "I'm sorry, Mr. Blake." Alexander gestured for his secretary to leave, his eyes fixed on Victoria. "It's fine. Leave us." The door closed, leaving them alone. The tension in the room was palpable. Victoria's eyes gleamed with a mixture of amusement and something darker. "Congratulations on your engagement," she said, her tone mildly sarcastic. "Why Emma?" Alexander's jaw tightened. "That's none of your business." Victoria's smile widened. "Of course. But you should know, they're coming after you." Alexander's interest was piqued. He looked up from his work, his eyes narrowing. "What do you mean?" "You remember what we did five years ago?" Victoria's voice was low and menacing. "Well, it's come around to bite you in the ass." A chill ran down Alexander's spine. He had only heard speculations from discreet insiders about a move against his company, and now Victoria was confirming it. "How do you know this?" Victoria ignored his question, her smile never wavering. "I could be of help to you, you know... or I could very well cause your downfall. You know how to contact me." With that, she turned and walked out, leaving Alexander in a state of bewilderment. Emma walked in just as Victoria left, catching only the last part of their conversation. She saw the normally composed and calculated Alexander looking genuinely bewildered. It was a rare sight, and it made her uneasy. "Ooh... Emma! What do you need?" Alexander said, trying to shrug off the confused look on his face. Emma, still suspicious, replied, "Your mother just called me. She wants to see us both at your penthouse this evening for a family dinner. She's been trying to reach you." "Oh, okay," Alexander said, regaining his composure. "Thank you for letting me know." The dinner that evening was a tense affair. Emma couldn't help but notice the inconsistencies in Alexander's behavior and the way he interacted with his family. He was distant, his responses to the dinner conversations clipped and formal, his usual confidence replaced by a cold detachment. His mother’s disapproving glances and Victoria's omnipresent smirk added to her unease. As the courses were served, Emma’s mind raced, her curiosity about the conversation she walked into earlier that day at his office growing with each passing moment. She noticed how his jaw tightened when Victoria spoke, how he avoided eye contact with his mother. The tension in his body was palpable, and it became increasingly clear to Emma that whatever had happened in the past, whatever secret lay hidden, it had everything to do with Victoria. As the wedding preparations continued, Emma found herself increasingly isolated. Alexander's distant behavior and the pressure of their impending nuptials weighed heavily on her. She confided in her friend Lisa, expressing her fears and suspicions. Lisa's support was unwavering, but it did little to alleviate Emma's growing sense of dread. One night, Alexander arranged a secret meeting with Victoria. The tension was thick as they met in a secluded location. Victoria’s presence was both a threat and a lifeline. She leaned in, her eyes gleaming with malicious intent. "InnovateX is coming for you," she said, her voice dripping with satisfaction. "You know how they nearly went under five years ago. Well now they know exactly what happened and they’re going to keep coming for you until you lose everything you've built." Alexander's heart pounded in his chest. The weight of her words pressed down on him, and he realized the full extent of the danger he was in. His carefully constructed life was on the verge of collapsing, and the facade of his engagement to Emma was the only thing keeping him afloat. "Why are you telling me this?" Alexander demanded. Victoria's smile was cold and calculating. "Because, Alex, I still have a role to play in your downfall... or your redemption. The choice is yours." She said caressing the back of his neck softly. As she walked away, Alexander was left standing in the shadows, his mind racing. The stakes had never been higher, and the future of everything he had built was hanging by a thread.
