Chapter 4

1535 Words
The morning of the wedding dawned bright and clear, but Emma’s heart was a storm of emotions. The grand ballroom of the hotel had been transformed into a scene from a fairy tale, with crystal chandeliers casting shimmering light over the opulent decorations. Every detail had been meticulously planned, but Emma felt like an outsider in her own wedding. She stood in front of the mirror, her wedding dress a masterpiece of lace and satin. Her mother fussed over her, tears of joy streaming down her face. "You look beautiful, Emma. Absolutely beautiful," she said, her voice choked with emotion. Emma forced a smile. "Thanks, Mom." Her younger brother, Jack, gave her a thumbs up. "You’ve got this, sis." Lisa, her best friend and maid of honor, squeezed her hand. "Just get through today. Remember, you’re doing this for your family." Emma nodded, taking a deep breath. The weight of her decision pressed down on her, but she reminded herself why she was doing this. Her family’s financial security depended on her marrying Alexander. As the ceremony began, Emma walked down the aisle, her heart pounding in her chest. She glanced at Alexander, standing at the altar with a calm, composed expression. He looked handsome in his tailored suit, but there was no warmth in his eyes, no spark of attraction. This was a business arrangement, nothing more. The vows were a blur. Emma tried to find some connection with Alexander, but his responses were absentminded, his gaze distant. When they exchanged rings, his touch was cool and impersonal. The reception was a grand affair, filled with influential guests, lavish food, and endless toasts. Emma mingled with Alex's employees, and to her surprise, they admired her intelligence and poise. It was a small comfort in the midst of the overwhelming day. Victoria's presence was a constant source of tension. She hadn’t been invited, but Alexander’s mother had insisted she come, hoping to sway Alexander at the last moment. Victoria’s smug smile and penetrating gaze made Emma’s skin crawl. She caught Alexander looking uneasy as well, a rare c***k in his usually impenetrable facade. The wedding night passed uneventfully in a blur. Emma moved into Alexander’s penthouse, a luxurious apartment 40 stories high with a stunning view of the city. The minimalist decor felt cold and impersonal, with modern art paintings on the walls and nothing to make the place feel homey or comfortable. A house manager oversaw the staff, ensuring the smooth running of the household. Emma's new life was a whirlwind of charity events and planning meetings. Alexander had put her in charge of Blake Enterprise's charity organization, and she threw herself into the work. It was a welcome distraction from the emotional void at home. Her days were filled with organizing donations, planning fundraisers, and attending meetings. She often returned home late, exhausted, and would have the maid run her a bath before she ate and went to sleep. Months passed in this manner, with Emma and Alexander maintaining the facade of a happy marriage. They appeared together at public events, always smiling and holding hands for the cameras, but in private, they were strangers living under the same roof. One evening, after a particularly grueling day, Emma returned home to find Alexander in his study. She rarely saw him at home, and their interactions were brief and businesslike. She hesitated at the door, watching him work. He seemed different, more tense than usual. "Alexander," she said softly, stepping into the room. He looked up, his expression neutral. "Emma. How was your day?" "Busy," she replied, forcing a smile. "But productive." He nodded, his attention already shifting back to his work. Emma sighed and turned to leave, but something caught her eye—a piece of paper on his desk. It looked out of place among the neatly arranged documents. She glanced at Alexander, who was engrossed in his work, and quickly picked up the paper. It was a letter, and as she read it, her heart sank. It was from Mr. Thornton, the founder of InnovateX; the company that had gone under about five years ago. The letter was a thinly veiled threat, hinting at their knowledge of his past misdeeds and promising retribution. Emma's hands trembled as she subtly hid the letter in her bag. A wave of confusion and fear washed over her. What had Alexander done? And why was InnovateX coming after him now? She left the study, her mind racing. She needed to find out more about Alexander’s past, but she had to be careful. Any wrong move could jeopardize everything. As she lay in bed that night, Emma felt more isolated and distant from Alexander than ever before. The facade of their marriage was cracking, and she feared what she might uncover beneath the surface. --- The next morning, Emma couldn’t shake off the unsettling feeling from the previous night. She walked into the kitchen to find Alexander sipping coffee at the counter, his eyes fixed on something on his iPad. "Alexander," she began, her voice steady but tinged with urgency. He looked up, his expression guarded. "Yes, Emma? Is something wrong?" Emma hesitated for a moment, then plunged ahead. "I found this last night." She placed the letter from InnovateX on his desk, her eyes searching his face for any sign of guilt or explanation. Alexander glanced at the letter, his jaw tightening imperceptibly. "It's nothing, Emma. Just some old business matters. You don’t need to worry about it." Emma shook her head, her resolve hardening. "I do need to worry about it, Alexander. If InnovateX has proof of your involvement in something illegal or unethical, it could ruin everything, including my family’s future." He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Emma, you have to trust me. I have everything under control." But Emma wasn’t satisfied with vague assurances. She leaned closer, her eyes locking with his. "Tell me the truth, Alexander. What happened five years ago? What is InnovateX threatening you with?" Alexander hesitated, his gaze flickering. Finally, he spoke, his voice low and measured. "Five years ago, my company and InnovateX were competing for a government contract. We won, but InnovateX has been trying to undermine us ever since. They’re fabricating false evidence to bring me down." Emma’s brow furrowed in disbelief. "Are you sure about this? Why didn’t you tell me earlier?" He reached out and gently touched her cheek, his touch surprisingly tender. "Because I didn’t want to involve you in this mess, Emma. I was trying to protect you." She pulled away slightly, still uncertain. "I don’t know what to believe, Alexander." He leaned in, brushing his lips against hers softly. It was the first time he had kissed her with any semblance of affection. "Go to work today," he murmured against her lips. "When you come back, I’ll have a surprise for you." Emma was taken aback by his sudden change in demeanor. As Alexander kissed her goodbye before she left for work, a rush of conflicting emotions swept through her. Confusion and turmoil churned inside her as she stepped out the door. The kiss lingered on her lips, leaving her torn between skepticism and a faint glimmer of hope. His sudden display of affection felt like a cruel tease against the backdrop of the threatening letter from InnovateX, which still haunted her thoughts. Later that day, Victoria’s entrance into Blake Tech Enterprise was as unsettling as ever, disrupting the controlled environment Alexander tried to maintain. Her presence alone sent a ripple of discomfort through the usually composed office. Alexander, seated behind his desk, couldn’t hide his unease as Victoria sauntered in, her heels clicking ominously against the marble floor. He braced himself for her next move, knowing her visits never boded well. With a smirk playing on her lips, Victoria wasted no time in delivering her bombshell. "Alexander," she began, her voice dripping with satisfaction, “Mr. Thornton from InnovateX is prepared to offer me up to 10 million dollars for evidence of your involvement in the company's downfall." Alexander's brow furrowed in disbelief. "How... how do you have evidence from years ago?" he managed to ask, his voice betraying a mix of astonishment and concern. Victoria chuckled, a sound that chilled the air. "Insurance, darling. You should know by now how thorough I can be." His mind raced with the implications. "What are you going to do?" he pressed, hoping against hope for a different outcome. Her smile widened, eyes gleaming with mischief. "I think I'll entertain their offer," she replied nonchalantly. "Or perhaps I'll see if the stakes can be raised." Alexander felt a sinking sensation in his chest, betrayed by someone he once trusted. His confusion morphed into a mixture of anger and disbelief. This wasn’t just about his company anymore; it threatened everything he had built, including his carefully constructed facade of a marriage. As Victoria turned to leave, Alexander sat there, stunned and flummoxed, watching her exit with a sense of impending doom. The weight of her threat hung heavily in the air, leaving him to contemplate the harsh reality of his past catching up to him in the most devastating way possible.
