Chapter 7 — The Price of Silence
Elena couldn't look at Adrian.
The mention of her father had brought back memories she had tried desperately to forget.
“My father didn't know about Lily,” she whispered.
Adrian's expression remained serious.
“Then why was he paid?”
“I don't know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
Elena looked up at him.
“I don't expect you to believe anything. I'm telling you the truth.”
Adrian stared at her for a moment before turning to his assistant.
“Find out who made the payment.”
“Yes, sir.”
The assistant left.
Elena sighed.
“I never wanted any of this.”
Adrian's voice softened slightly.
“Then tell me what happened.”
She hesitated.
“My father told me your family wanted me gone. He said staying with you would destroy your future.”
“And you believed him?”
“I was young. I believed my father.”
Adrian looked away.
“And after you left?”
“I discovered I was pregnant.”
He looked at Lily.
“You never contacted me.”
“I wanted to. Every day.”
“Then why didn't you?”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“Because someone threatened me.”
Adrian immediately turned back.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“What did they say?”
“They told me that if I ever contacted you, Lily would disappear.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“Why didn't you tell me this before?”
“Because I was afraid they were still watching.”
Silence filled the hallway.
Then Adrian slowly reached for her hand.
Elena looked down at their hands.
It had been five years since he had touched her like that.
“I don't know who threatened you,” he said quietly, “but I'm going to find them.”
Elena shook her head.
“Adrian, please don't.”
“I have already lost five years with my daughter.”
He looked directly into her eyes.
“I won't lose any more.”
Before Elena could respond, Adrian's phone rang.
He answered.
His assistant's voice sounded urgent.
“Sir, we traced the payment.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“Who sent it?”
There was a long pause.
Then the assistant gave him a name.
Adrian's expression changed.
He slowly looked at Elena.
“It was my mother.”
Elena's heart stopped.
And suddenly, five years of unanswered questions had a terrifying new beginning.
