Chapter 5 Dave was seated in his office. His mind ran wild after the call from his father's doctor. "Dave, your father's health keeps getting worse!" "Isn't there anything else you could do? How about getting help from other doctors?" Dave suggested. But the doctor just breathed deeply before replying. "Am sorry Dave. But we've got the best doctors in all of Chicago. There's nothing we could do about him!" Dave almost went crazy. He couldn't believe he was about to lose his father to cancer. "Alright. What would you suggest I do?" "He needs you in his final days. I suggest you come around quite often" Dave nodded as a tear began to form in his eyes. "Ok. That won't be a problem. I'll be there soon" "Alright, see you then, sir," the doctor said before ending the call. Dave bowed his head to the desk as he allowed his emotions to overcome him. Suddenly, someone knocked on the door. Dave raised his head. "Who's there?" "Jeff, sir!" Came the sharp reply "Get inside quickly!" Dave ordered. Jeff stepped in. He noticed Dave's mood. Dave tried to hide it but it was too obvious. "How did it go?" Dave asked Jeff, cutting him off from his thoughts. "Went well, sir. We were able to track the location!" Dave was impressed. "!od!. Did you deliver the envelope to her?" "Yes sir. Just as you wanted." "Alright. What do you think about her?" Dave asked Jeff dryly. Jeff wasn't expecting that question. It took him by surprise. "Pardon sir?" "Do you think Father would like her?" Jeff swallowed hard. "I think so. She's got the look!" Dave was left in surprise at Jeff's review. He never thought Jeff was into women. He always looked mean and focused. "Okay. Get the car ready. We need to pay father a visit at the hospital!" "I heard he was hospitalized again today," Jeff said emotionally. "Yeah. His health has gotten worse. I just finished speaking with the doctor before you came in" Jeff could see the look of sorrow on Dave's face. His boss has not been the same since the day his father was diagnosed with cancer. "I'm sorry boss. I hope he gets better soon" Dave just scoffed. "I don't think he would survive the battle. The damn thing has eaten deeper than we thought!" Jeff quickly raised his head in shock as his eyes met with Dave's. "Sir….is there nothing else they could do?" Dave shook his head "Nope. Even my father had given up. He already handed me his last wish!" Dave revealed. Jeff just stood where he was, speechless. "Get the car ready, we need to get to the hospital now" "Ok, sir." But the moment Jeff opened the door, voices were heard outside as different reporters from different news stations had assembled outside the firm, waiting for Dave to step out. Dave was used to it. But today, he wasn't going to say a word to them. A few minutes after Jeff had gone out, Dave stepped out. The moment he stepped outside. Cameras flashed, and reporters swooned on him from both sides. Almost wanting to choke his track. Then the questions poured in. "Mr. Dave, why was your father hospitalized? Is he sick? "Sources say he has incurable cancer. Is that true? "I heard he has even written down his death wish! What is he requesting? The last question shocked Dave as he wondered how these reporters get their information Dave kept walking towards the car before his guards stepped in to cut off the reporters. Once inside, Jeff moved the car. "Jeff. Is there any chance we have a spy amongst us?" Dave asked Jeff was taken aback by Dave's query. "I don't think so. Why do you ask sir?" "Nothing. Am just curious about how these reporters get their information" "It's their job sir. They survive by digging for information" Jeff said. "True. But we've got to be more careful" "Definitely sir," Jeff said as he kept his focus on driving. Dave relaxed back. For the first time, he appreciated having Jeff around. Talking to him helped ease some worries off his mind. Thinking about his father's last wish, he wondered. Why would Father request what I hated the most from me? Why not wish for something else? Deep inside, Dave felt trapped by his father's last wish but he had no choice. Besides, it's what he wanted before dying. Dave sighed in defeat as he reached into his pocket and brought out a piece with some inscriptions on it Then he looked up at Jeff. "Am so confused. Should I go ahead with it? Jeff looked at Dave from the rear mirror. Dave showed him the paper. He saw its content. "Yes boss…….. the time is right!" That was when Dave did what he never planned to do again in his life.
