The Mind Link

The heavy silence that filled the courtyard after the battle was broken only by the soft, rhythmic sound of Aria’s human breathing. She remained curled against Kael’s chest, her skin soaking in the intense, radiant heat radiating from his powerful body. The silver cloak he had wrapped around her felt heavier now, saturated with the metallic scent of rogue blood and the thick, possessive aroma of his dark chocolate and rain aura. Kael carried her up the wide stone steps of the medical wing, his strides long and unhurried. He didn't look back at his warriors, nor did he acknowledge the whispers of the servants who cleared the hallways as they passed. His entire universe had narrowed down to the woman in his arms. He gently placed her onto the soft mattress of his private quarters, stepping back just enough to give her space but keeping his golden eyes locked onto her face. "You shouldn't have shifted out there, Aria," Kael murmured, his deep voice carrying a strange mix of pride and lingering terror. "The brown rogue... he was close. Too close."Aria pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders, sitting up against the wooden headboard. "I had to, Kael. He was going to enter the Pack House. I am a survivalist; I don't wait for others to protect me." A small, breathtaking smile tugged at the corner of Kael’s lips. He sat on the edge of the mattress, his large hand reaching out to capture hers. The moment their skin met, the familiar spark of electricity jolted through their veins, warmer and deeper than before. "I see that now. My wolf is incredibly proud of you, little wolf. But you must understand something... when you shifted, something opened between us. "Aria frowned, about to ask what he meant, when a sudden, clear voice echoed directly inside her mind. You belong to me, Aria. She gasped, her eyes widening as she stared at Kael. His lips hadn't moved, but the voice was unmistakably his—deeper, richer, and resonating straight into her consciousness. "What... what was that?" she stammered, pulling her hand back slightly. "It’s the mind link," Kael explained smoothly, his golden eyes glowing with a quiet intensity. "It is the telepathic connection shared between mated pairs and pack members. Because you shifted within our territory and defended our people, your inner wolf has officially accepted the Bear Crest bond. You can hear me now, and if you focus, I can hear you." Aria closed her eyes, trying to block out the strange new sensation. For five years, her mind had been her own private sanctuary. The thought of someone else—especially a powerful Alpha—having access to her innermost thoughts was terrifying. Try it, Kael’s voice echoed in her head again, gentle but commanding. Just think of a word and direct it to me. Aria took a deep, steadying breath. She looked at his rugged features, the sharp jawline, and the absolute devotion in his eyes. She focused her thoughts, pushing them toward him. Leave me alone, she thought fiercely. Kael let out a dark, deep chuckle that vibrated through the link and in the physical room. "A fierce response, as expected. But I cannot do that, Luna. Your thoughts are beautiful, even when you are angry with me. "Aria rolled her eyes, but she couldn't suppress the small flutter in her chest. "Is this permanent?" she asked aloud. "Yes," Kael replied, his tone turning serious as he leaned closer, his scent enveloping her entirely. "The bond is fully sealed now. Tomorrow, we must begin preparing the pack for the formal Luna ceremony. The southern rogues were defeated tonight, but they were just scouts. Their main leader, Alpha Silas, will not stop until he retrieves what he believes is his." Aria’s breath hitched at the mention of the name. "Silas? The leader of the southern faction is Silas?"Kael’s posture instantly stiffened, his golden eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "You know him?" Aria looked down at her lap, her fingers gripping the blanket tightly as old, buried memories began to resurface. "He... he is the reason I became a rogue five years ago. His pack destroyed my family's small territory in the west. He has been searching for me ever since, because he wanted to force me into a political marriage to claim my family's remaining lands." A thunderous growl erupted from Kael’s chest, so loud and fierce that it shook the wooden frames of the windows. The dark aura in the room became thick and suffocating, his wolf furious at the mere thought of another man touching what belonged to him. "He will never touch you again," Kael vowed, his voice a low, lethal promise that sent shivers down Aria's spine. "If Silas steps an inch into the northern mountains, I will tear his pack apart piece by piece. You are the Luna of Bear Crest now, Aria. My pack will bleed for you, and I will kill for you." Aria looked up, meeting his fierce gaze. For the first time in five years, the constant fear of being hunted by Silas faded away, replaced by an overwhelming sense of security. She wasn't alone anymore. She had a mountain, a pack, and a ferocious Alpha standing between her and her past. "Thank you, Kael," she whispered softly. Kael reached up, his large thumb gently brushing away a stray tear from her cheek. "Rest now, my silver wolf. Tomorrow, the north will learn how to fight for their true queen." He kissed the top of her head one last time before blowing out the candles, leaving the room in the soft embrace of moonlight. Aria closed her eyes, listening to his steady footsteps fade down the hall. For the first time, she fell asleep without fear, knowing she was finally home. Outside the heavy stone walls of the fortress, the northern territory was still on high alert. Sentinels moved like shadows along the borders, their eyes scanning the dark woods for any signs of another sudden ambush. But inside the Alpha’s private quarters, a profound and sacred peace remained. The ancient bond had finally anchored Aria’s restless spirit to this icy mountain. She was no longer a ghost running from her dark past. As the silver moonlight bathed her sleeping face, her inner wolf purred with absolute contentment, knowing that a powerful pack and a ferocious Alpha were now standing guard over her destiny.
