Chapter 1 - Being Different

1376 Words
21st Century in New York City It was a cold dawn morning when Zarina took her routines to run over in Brooklyn. She wears her all-black t-shirt, jogger pants, and black hoodie jacket with thin black gloves in her hands. It's thirty minutes been running around, and her sweat flows from her head to her face. A few people did the same as her while she stopped to take a rest for a while. She ends up on the baywalk to witness the beautiful sunrise from the east. She closed her eyes and felt the cold breeze wind, the random clatter around her, and the whiffs around her. Yes! Everything around her she felt because of her being different from humans. She's a shapeshifter white wolf in her pack, but she doesn't want to embrace it because she wants to live like a normal one. She was born in the present world and mingled with the crowd of humans and technology. While she closed her eyes and thought about herself, she smelled a human scent walking in her direction and just waited for the man to approach her. "Miss?" She opened her eyes and turned to him. "Yes?" Her forehead wrinkled after. He has a thin beard over his face, a blue gaze, and red lips. He wears a pair of grey color jogger shirts and pants with white shoes. Of course, a perfect American national feature. And the most thing he has is the leash of his Alaskan malamute dog with him. "Uhm, sorry to disturb you, but my dog wanted something in you. I couldn't stop my dog from going in your direction, and it's a weird thing." He slightly scratches his head because of feeling ashamed. "Oh!" She wanted to smile, but she didn't. Their kind is attracted to ordinary animals like dogs, and it seems the dog he has scents her that she's different. She moves towards the female dog. "There's something in her neck. Can I touch her neck?" "Yeah, sure. Don't worry; my dog is a kind one." "All right. Let me check it here." She gropes the dog's neck and finds something horrible thing. She removed it and showed it to the man. "See? It's a tick. Sometimes you need to check your dog's woolly fur." She turned to the baywalk side and threw it. "But how did you know that⸻" She cut off what he would like to tell her. "I have to go!" She runs off in the other direction and leaves the man with his cutie dog. You must preside on your throne! That voice again. How many times has she heard that voice since she was young and ignored it? She never told her parents and continued her life in the modern world. Yet, she still used her abilities as a shapeshifter that she couldn't resist when needed. The dog barked once at her, which meant thank you. While the man he left was wondering the way, she dissembled. She went back home to start her new day. IT'S six o'clock in the evening when she started to prepare herself to go to her Hope Wine Bar. She put her things inside her car and drove the latest model navy blue mustang. She now enjoys the wealth she has had since her mother married a wealthy man who owned a vineyard in the Upper Mississippi Valley in Washington. Her father's company is one of the suppliers of wine in the country; that's why she has ten branches of Wine Bar in different parts of the United States. She parked her car beside her wine bar after ten minutes of driving in no road traffic congestion. That's why she loves the city because of the cleanliness and disciplinary types of ruled government there. When she closed her car door, she was surprised when a man grabbed her bag. She did not immediately sense it because her mind was preoccupied with the thought of expanding her business. "s**t!" She clenched her fist, then she followed the thief and ran fast. Fortunately, she has a unique ability and can smell the man where it goes. She seems like a cop searching for a criminal in New York City. She smelled the man's scent in the air until she found him in a vacant lot with an abandoned hospital, but they were five young men now. They even opened her bag, searching for something inside. It contained money, her cards, and other make-up things. "Hey, boys! Are you done with my bag? Can I get my things?" she asked with a gasping sound. She ran far from the wine bar to follow the thieves. Five men approached her and then grinned at her. They already had some of her cards and money in their hands, and then a man threw her bag. She just held back her nagging emotions because it had just happened to her. She knows that many such young people in New York are victimizing rich people to get money from them. But this is not good at once for her since she can fight them with her unequal strength. A man approached her and said he would fight fist to fist with her. She was not nervous about that because she could defend herself. She also learned to fight and protect herself against those like them. It's just that she still has to control herself not to harm them and that she can't reveal her true identity so that people don't have speculations about their existence. The man rushed forward and unleashed a blow on her. She quickly saw its attack, and then she grabbed its left hand. She pulled it closer to her then she used her knee to attack it on his abdomen. She slightly twisted the man's left hand and then clouted it. "Uggghhh!" He squealed in pain and then plunged to the ground when she pushed him. "Who's next?" She shifted his gaze to the four men who remained staring at her. Another one moved as he took a knife from his back. With that knife, it rushed in Zarina's direction while the other three rushed next to their comrade to defeat her. She avoided the man's attack until she had used the form of her eyes she should never have used for mortals. Her golden wolf eyes saw the man move and find its available defense. She held his right hand carrying a knife, then lifted it as if it were just a piece of paper. She threw the man over a fence, and then he squealed because of what she did. "Huh?! S-She's a monster!" The other man draws on his face in shock. Werewolves possess supernatural strength that makes them far more vital than humans and many other magical creatures. Even though she's not in her form, she's solid and fast enough to defend herself. The three young men stepped aside, turning their backs and running fast. She turned to the two young men trying to stand up, but she showed her ferocious face to frighten them. They have wounds and scratches on their skin, but they try to escape. The two young men run while her cards from one of them drop from the ground. She calmed down, and her golden wolf eyes back to normal after she's even-minded. She walks in the direction of her things and puts them inside her bag. Her money wasn't there, but it was all right with her. She thought that it could help more them than her. Poor little humans! Why are you like this, and didn't you work hard to feed yourself? Disgusting humans! She shakes her head and sighs after. After that incident, she returned to her wine bar, forgot what happened to her, and faced the reality of being the owner of a famous wine bar in the city. She doesn't want to hurt the people around her, but sometimes she must protect herself from them. This event is the reality of the human world that sometimes they are just the ones who made their own indignant. But that were a few sides to them, and she still loves the better sides of living with them.
