“You want me to tell you?” she asked, sharply. “Joy,” I said as calmly as I could, “I’m here to have a drink with Mark and the lads. It’s his birthday. Let’s just be grown up, shall we? I think it’s lovely to see you again, I really do. You look fantastic. I’d love to ask you how things are going, and what you’re up to but when I tried to make conversation earlier you shut me down. I know it can’t be anything I did because it’s been well over a year since we saw each other properly. So whatever’s wrong, I hope you feel better soon.
