Lila's POV I heard them before I saw them. Three sets of footsteps crunched over the cobblestone behind me. My heart sped up before my mind even caught up to the danger. I wiped my face fast and turned around. Three men stood a few feet away. They were silhouetted by the dim streetlamp. The first was tall and lanky. His jacket hung unzipped. A bottle swung loose in his hand with every step. His eyes locked on me the way a predator studies something wounded. The second was shorter and stocky. He had a shaved head and a thick neck. He grinned at me with all brown teeth. The third stayed a step behind the other two. Quieter. Watchful. His hands shoved deep in his pockets. He looked younger than the others, but no less dangerous.
