Chapter 4: The Alpha's Claim

1103 Words
The elevator dropped. Aria’s stomach lurched as the steel box shot downward, Damian’s arm still locked around her waist. Firefighter carry, but it didn’t feel heroic. It felt like being claimed. “Put me down,” she hissed, fists pounding against his chest. His suit jacket was expensive. Her knuckles probably weren’t leaving a dent. “I’m not a sack of flour, Damian.” His eyes flicked to her. Silver again. Wolf eyes. “No. You’re my wife.” The word hit her harder than the descent. Wife. Not fiancée. Not partner. Wife. Signed in blood thirty seconds ago. The elevator dinged. Basement level. Private garage. Cool air hit her face when the doors opened. Polished concrete stretched endlessly, lit by cold white lights. And parked in the center, like it owned the entire floor, was a matte black Bugatti. Low, lethal, ridiculous. “Of course it’s a Bugatti,” Aria muttered. Damian finally set her down, but only so he could open the passenger door. He didn’t let go of her wrist. Not until she slid into the leather seat herself. “Buckle up, little human,” he said, voice low as he walked around the car. “This is the part where you learn what ‘alpha billionaire’ actually means.” The engine purred to life. No roar. Just power, contained. Like him. Aria yanked the seatbelt across her chest, heart hammering for reasons she didn’t want to name. Fear? Maybe. But there was something else under it. Heat. The way his scent filled the car, cedar and storm and something wild she didn’t have a name for. “You said protection,” she said as the Bugatti glided toward the exit ramp. “This doesn’t look like protection. This looks like kidnapping with better cars.” Damian smirked, one hand on the wheel, the other resting near her thigh on the center console. Not touching. Almost touching. “Same thing, where I’m from.” The garage gate lifted. Night air rushed in, cold against her cheeks. The city blurred past as he merged onto the highway without checking mirrors. Like he already knew the road was his. For ten minutes, neither of them spoke. Only the engine. Only her pulse. Only the occasional flicker of silver in his eyes when she glanced over. “Where are we going?” she finally asked. “Home.” “I have a home.” “Not anymore.” He said it casually, like he was discussing the weather. “Your father’s debt just became my debt, Aria. Which means his enemies are now my enemies. You sleeping in that apartment tonight is how you get your throat torn out before sunrise.” The word throat made her flinch. Damian noticed. Of course he did. Alphas noticed everything. He slowed the car, then turned down a private road lined with ancient oak trees. Gates rose before them, wrought iron and tall enough to block the moon. A security guard barely glanced at the Bugatti before waving them through. “This is your home now,” Damian said as the mansion came into view. Stone and glass, lit from within like a castle. Three stories. East wing, west wing, and something that looked like a greenhouse attached to the side. “Ashford Estate. My territory. My rules. My protection.” Aria swallowed. “How big is it?” “Big enough that you’ll get lost for a week if you try to run.” His gaze cut to her, sharp and knowing. “Don’t try.” The car stopped at the front steps. Before she could reach for the handle, Damian was there, opening her door. He didn’t offer his hand. He didn’t need to. The message was clear: she moved when he allowed it. Inside, the air smelled like leather, firewood, and him. A grand staircase split the foyer. Chandeliers dripped crystal overhead. Every surface gleamed. But Aria only had eyes for the wolves. Two massive gray shapes lay by the fireplace in the sitting room. They lifted their heads as she entered, golden eyes tracking her movement. Not pets. Guards. Their teeth were longer than her fingers. Damian stepped in front of her without thinking. Shielding her from them, from the room, from everything. “They’re pack,” he said quietly. “They won’t hurt you. Not unless I say so.” The wolves stared at her a beat longer, then lowered their heads, accepting. Or maybe recognizing. The bond. The one she signed into existence with red ink. A housekeeper appeared from a side hall, older woman with sharp eyes and softer hands. “Master Damian. I’ve prepared the east wing suite as you requested.” “Good,” he said. Then he looked at Aria. Really looked. Hair mussed from the car ride. Lips parted. Fear mixed with defiance in her eyes. “She’ll need clothes. Food. And a lock on her door. For now.” “For now?” Aria echoed. Damian’s mouth twitched. Not quite a smile. “You’re my wife, Aria. That means you sleep under my roof. But I’m not a monster.” His voice dropped, meant only for her. “You’ll have your own room. Your own space. Until you ask for more.” The way he said more made her skin prickle. The housekeeper led her up the staircase, past oil paintings of Ashford ancestors with wolf gray eyes. The east wing suite was ridiculous. Four poster bed, marble bathroom bigger than her old apartment, windows that looked out over acres of dark forest. “Mr. Ashford said you’re to ring if you need anything,” the housekeeper said, setting a stack of folded clothes on the bed. “He’s... particular about his mate’s comfort.” Mate. Again. That word. Aria waited until the door clicked shut. Then she locked it. Clicked the deadbolt for good measure. She pressed her back against the wood and slid to the floor, knees pulled to her chest. The bond thrummed under her skin, unfamiliar and warm. Like someone had tied a string around her ribs and connected it to the man downstairs. Downstairs, Damian stood at the bottom of the staircase, staring up at her closed door. His wolf paced behind his eyes, restless, territorial. Mine, it growled. “Not yet,” he murmured back. But his hand curled into a fist at his side. She’d signed the contract. She was legally his. The only question left was how long before she admitted she wanted to be. Outside, the forest howled. Inside, the bond tightened. To be continued...
