Chapter 11: Timeless Words

Nick appeared suddenly, his hand reaching out to hers. He held her gently but firmly, his presence immediately calming her fears. Without a word, he guided her through the forest, his steps sure and steady. Kida was practically dancing within her as the warmth of Nicks hand seeped into her own cold fingers. They emerged into a small clearing, where an old but well-maintained cabin stood. It looked like something out of a storybook, its rustic charm blending seamlessly with the surrounding woods. Nick led her to the door, lighting a small oil lamp as they stepped inside. The cabin was cozy, the warm glow of the lamp revealing shelves filled with beautifully carved wooden toys. Tools were laid out neatly on a workbench, and a stack of logs and lumber rested in the corner. Ellie’s eyes widened as she took it all in, marveling at the craftsmanship. She turned to Nick, her curiosity piqued. "Are you the one who's been making these?" she asked, her voice filled with wonder. Nick hesitated for a moment before nodding, a small smile playing on his lips. "I've been making the toys for years," he began, his voice low but steady, as if confessing a carefully guarded secret. "I leave them as surprises for the children of the village each Christmas." Ellie leaned forward, her curiosity piqued. "Why? Why go to all that effort?" Nick's smile softened, his eyes distant as if he were recalling a memory. "Because it's the magic of believing," he said, his voice warm and sincere. "When I see the children’s eyes light up, their laughter filling the air as they show each other their gifts, it’s like the whole world pauses. For a moment, everything feels right." He glanced at the wooden reindeer he had been carving earlier, running his fingers gently over the smooth surface. "This village has seen its share of hardship, Ellie. Generations of families have lived here, working hard to survive. The winters are harsh, and sometimes joy feels like a scarce thing. I wanted to give them something to hold on to, something that reminds them that there’s beauty and kindness in the world." Ellie studied him, the firelight dancing across his features. "You do this all by yourself? Every year?" Nick nodded, a flicker of pride in his expression. "It’s worth it. The mystery, the sense of wonder—it’s not just for the children. It’s for everyone. It brings the village together, makes them believe in something bigger than themselves." Ellie’s gaze softened, a small smile tugging at her lips. "That’s... beautiful, Nick. But doesn’t anyone ever wonder who’s behind it all?" Nick’s smile turned a little rueful. "Oh, they’ve wondered. Over the years, there have been plenty of theories. Some think it’s a traveling merchant, others believe it’s the spirit of St. Nicholas himself. I’ve heard every story imaginable, and I let them believe what they want. The mystery is part of the magic." Ellie tilted her head, her curiosity deepening. "But why toys? Why not something... simpler?" Nick’s gaze met hers, a quiet intensity in his eyes. "Toys are more than just objects. They carry memories, connections. A child remembers the doll that comforted them when they were scared, or the wooden train they shared with their best friend. It’s not about the object itself; it’s about what it represents. Joy, hope, love—those are the things I want to give." For a moment, the cabin was silent, the crackling of the fire the only sound. Ellie felt a warmth spreading through her chest, a mix of admiration and something deeper she couldn’t quite name. She looked around the cabin, at the rows of carefully crafted toys, each one unique and made with such care. "You’re like Santa Claus," she said softly, her voice filled with wonder. Nick chuckled, the sound low and warm. "Maybe. But I’m just a man trying to make the world a little brighter." Ellie smiled, the corners of her eyes crinkling. "Well, I think you’re doing a pretty amazing job." Nick's gaze lingered on her, something unreadable flickering in his expression. "Thank you, Ellie," he said quietly. "That means more than you know." "Our mate is wonderful, isn’t he?" Kida exclaimed, her voice brimming with excitement. "Please, claim him!" But Ellie hesitated, her thoughts swirling. She had too many unanswered questions, too many uncertainties. She couldn’t reveal herself—not yet—not to a man she barely knew, no matter how drawn she felt to him. Before Ellie could ask any more questions, Nick stepped closer, his gaze locking with hers. He gently took her hand, his touch sending a warmth through her that chased away the lingering chill of the forest. "Of all the Christmases I've lived through," he said, his voice barely more than a whisper, "this is the first time I've wanted something for myself." Nick gently tilted her chin up, his eyes searching hers with an intensity that sent a shiver through her. Slowly, he leaned in, his lips brushing against hers with a tenderness that felt both cautious and electric. Kida melted within her, a soft whimper of bliss echoing in her mind. For a fleeting moment, Ellie allowed herself to get lost in the warmth, the connection, before the weight of her uncertainties returned to the edges of her thoughts. After a moment, Nick pulled away, a soft smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "It grows late," he said gently, his voice carrying an old-world charm. He led her out of the cabin, his hand lightly resting on her elbow as they made their way through the dark forest. The air was crisp, and the sound of snow crunching underfoot filled the silence between them. Ellie’s mind whirled as she replayed his words. There was a weight to them, a depth she wasn’t accustomed to hearing. "It grows late," he had said. The phrasing, the cadence—it felt as though it belonged to another era. Ellie frowned, a flicker of recognition sparking in her thoughts. She had read something strikingly similar in the castle’s historical files, though she couldn’t yet place where or when. How strange, she thought to herself, stealing a glance at Nick. The firelight from the cabin seemed to linger on his features, casting him in a golden glow. He carried himself with a quiet grace, as if he were untouched by the weight of time. Her curiosity deepened, but so did her sense of caution. There was so much she didn’t know about him, and yet, she felt drawn to him in a way she couldn’t explain. As they parted, Nick looked at her, a twinkle in his eye. "Keep my secret safe, Ellie," he said, his voice filled with warmth. Ellie said goodnight to Nick, her heart still fluttering from the quiet intimacy of their shared moment. But as she turned and began her walk back to the castle, Kida erupted, her voice surging with fury and frustration. "What were you thinking, Ellie?" Kida snarled, her tone filled with exasperation. "How could you let him go? He’s our mate—our second chance! And you just walked away!" Ellie sighed, her steps slowing as she tried to calm her wolf. "Kida, it’s not that simple," she thought back, her voice tinged with worry. "I don’t know if I can trust him with what I am. What if revealing myself changes everything? What if he can’t accept it?" Kida growled softly, her tone urging. "He’s our mate, Ellie. The bond doesn’t lie. He’ll understand." Ellie bit her lip, uncertainty gripping her. "But what if he’s not like us, Kida? What if he’s just... human?" The thought settled heavily in her mind, grounding her. "I can’t just take that leap without understanding the risks. What if revealing myself pushes him away?" "You’re holding back because of fear," Kida pressed. "You’re overthinking. We need to claim him before it’s too late." "No," Ellie thought firmly, steeling herself against her wolf’s insistence. "I need time. I need to understand who he really is and if he’ll accept who I am. This isn’t something I can rush." Kida let out a huff of frustration but quieted, her presence simmering just beneath the surface. "Fine," she said after a long pause. "But don’t wait too long, Ellie. We can’t risk losing him."
