Chapter Two

2027 Words
“What the hell do you mean you are leaving?!” Brooke screamed throughout the bustling restaurant.             “Great, Brooke, cause a scene, why don’t you.”             “How the hell am I supposed to act when my best friend tells me she is moving, and this is her last week here?”             “Imagine how I feel. I don’t want to leave, but this is an opportunity for my mom that she just cannot say no to. She deserves to have another shot at happiness.”        “And what about your happiness Roxy? You always take care of everyone else around you instead of doing what you want to do.”             “Brooke, there is nothing more I can do about it. It sucks, yeah, but I am doing this for my mom.”             “It just blows! I am going to miss you so much. You are my best friend! What am I going to do without you?”             “I am sure you will find something, or shall I say someone to occupy your time.”             They both broke out into a fit of laughter.             “Girls, back to work!” Mr. Brunson yelled from his office.             “Yikes, he is in a mood today!” Brooke said as she started mocking him.             “He is just upset that I am leaving. We have become kind of close over the last few months. Plus, I did tell him that today is my last day working here.”             Mr. Brunson stepped out of his office, giving the girls a sideways glare. They both shuffled off, getting back to their shifts. For it being a Wednesday, it was busy. Before long, night fell, and their shifts were over.             Mr. Brunson caught Roxy after getting her things from her locker. “Roxy, I just want to say that you are an incredibly special girl. In just the short amount of time that I’ve known you, you have become like family. If you ever need anything at all, you got my number.”             “Thank you! I promise you I will call as often as I can.” They gave each other a short hug before Roxy let go of him to turn to leave.             Brooke rounded the corner, catching Roxy before she walked out the door. She hurried over to her, locking her arm in with Roxy’s. “If this is going to be your last few days here, at least let me take you shopping tomorrow.”             “Okay. My mom has some things to arrange tomorrow anyway so that I will be free other than packing. You want to help with that?”             “Ew, no. Anyways we will hit the mall around eleven. I will pick you up, so make sure your ass is up and ready.”             “Yes, mom!” Roxy said to Brooke sarcastically.             Soon Brooke had dropped Roxy back off at home. She headed straight to her room upstairs. The room was small and surprisingly not what you would imagine a teenager’s room would look like. Roxy had not done much to it since she was little. The only thing she had added to it was the small desk in the corner of the room and the laptop that sat on top that she used for her online schoolwork. Other than that, it still looked like a child’s room with purple and pink decorative flowers covering the walls, her princess bedding, and the curtains to match. She still even had all her childhood animals tucked inside her princess toybox.             “Time for a nice long shower.” Roxy had said to herself.             She walked directly across the hall and into the bathroom after gathering a towel from the hall closet. She turned on the shower, immediately stepping inside. The steam from the shower began slowly filling the room, along with the aroma of her coconut shampoo and body wash. The water cascaded over her body, filling her with the warmth she needed. As the water began to turn cold, she had no other choice but to get out.             As she wrapped the towel around her body, she heard the same voice she had heard earlier this week.             “Hello Roxy, it is Rain.”             Roxy grabbed the closest thing to her, holding up a plunger like she was getting ready to swing. “Who…who’s there?”             “We have much to talk about, Roxy. Firstly, let me introduce myself. I am Rain, your wolf.”             Roxy was confused. She thought she must be daydreaming.             “No, you are not daydreaming. You can hear me because I am allowing you to.”             Roxy’s voice was shaky as she spoke. “Why are you allowing me to hear from you now after all these years?”             “When you became seventeen, I awakened inside of you. I have been there since birth, but without you being properly trained about what you are, I could not fully reach you until you came of age. I have been trying to talk to you since you were six.”             She could not believe what she was hearing. This was her mind playing tricks on her again. There was no way she was a wolf. She was just your average everyday girl, nothing special. She did not even believe in the supernatural. “It is a little hard to believe when you do not exactly believe in this kind of thing.”             Rain began to speak once again. “It is only because you do not know what you are. Speak with your mother before you make a move. Tonight preferably. The sooner you find out about what you are, the more it will begin to make sense to you.”             Just like that, she was gone. Roxy could not piece together what had just happened, but she knew that she was going to march straight downstairs and wait for her mom to get home.             Now midnight, her mother finally walked through the door.             “Hey Roxy, what is going on?”             “Mom, we need to talk. Something happened to me tonight, and I am not sure if I am going crazy or not.”             “What is it, honey?” Esther began to sense the panic in her daughter’s voice.             “I am not sure how to say this, but a voice in my head told me to talk to you.”             Esther sighed as she knew that one day, she would have to explain this to her daughter. “Honestly, Roxy, I expected you to come to me a lot sooner than you did. Your father and I grew up knowing what we were, so you are at a disadvantage. I am sorry I did not tell you about this earlier. It is just that we did not want this to be a part of your life. We wanted you to have a chance at a normal life without all of this complicating it.”             “Please just tell me without beating around the bush about it.”             “You are a werewolf, Roxy. Just like your father was and, just like I am.”             “ARE YOU CRAZY!” Roxy had never yelled like this before, but this was just too impossible for her to believe.             “I wish that I were. Step back, and I will show you. I have not been in my wolf form in quite some time so excuse me if this takes a minute. Whatever you do, do not be scared. I will not hurt you.”             Right in front of her eyes, her mother shifted into an exceptionally large wolf. Her clothes were shredded to pieces as she did. She was an amber color, just like her mother’s hair was. When she stood up proud, she really showed her height. As Roxy looked at her, she could tell this was her mother, but it was still almost impossible to believe, and had Roxy not seen it with her own eyes, she would not have believed it herself.             Her mother’s wolf looked at her with her large brown eyes before she kneeled in front of her, lowering her head in front of Roxy. Roxy closed her eyes as if she were in a dream, only to reopen them to see her mother completely naked in front of her.             “Damn, mom, put on some clothes!”             Esther started to laugh. “That is what happens when you are in wolf form, honey. I cannot help it.” She leaned over the other side of the sofa, digging in the bag that she had sat down there before starting this conversation. She dug out jeans and a t-shirt, placing them over her body.             In a matter of minutes, Roxy’s world had changed as she knew it.             “Roxy, take a seat. It is time I told you about what you really are.”             They walked together over into the small living room, taking a seat on the sofa.             “Your father was what is called a Beta, which is an Alpha’s second in command. The Alpha of our pack was cruel and would kill without reason. After your father and I mated, we left the pack to start our lives together….”             “Wait. What is mating?”             “Silly me. Mating is when you meet the wolf you were destined to be with. No one really knows when or who it will be until the moment it happens. Your wolf will take over, letting you know when that time comes. Once you and your mate have found each other, then you mark each other with a bite. When some people find their mate, they either accept the mating process, or they deny it.”             “You can deny your destined mate?”             “Yes. It will always be up to you whether or not you want a mate. Having a mate makes your senses kick into overdrive, and you both become stronger, faster, and more aware of your surroundings. Your wolves link with each other, and so do your minds. You become one, so to speak. Once an Alpha mates, he finds what is called his Luna. It is still his mate, but it is a little different than regular wolves mating. Once an Alpha finds his Luna, his pack becomes stronger too. If an Alpha eventually does not find his mate, his pack fades away most of the time because it is not stronger than those with Alphas and Lunas controlling their packs. But you can also deny this bond. You simply say to your destined mate, I Esther Carson deny you, whatever his name is, as my mate. The only thing is that your mate has to accept it as well.”             “This is a lot.”             “I know it is, and we will discuss this more, but I think that is all for tonight.”             “Wait, one more thing. The voice that I am hearing is that my wolf trying to communicate with me?”             “Yes, she wants you to shift. Once you shift for the first time, you and your wolf can finally become one. She can reach out to you whenever you need her and the same for her. You may think that you do not need her, but I promise that you will want to shift. I just suggest you go out into the woods where no one can see you.”             Esther said goodnight to Roxy and headed for bed. It was two in the morning now, but Roxy could not sleep with all the information she had just heard.             “Go out into the woods behind your home. We can shift there.” She heard her wolf Rain speaking to her.             Roxy was curious about how this would work, and even though she was terrified, she knew that this was something she must do. She grabbed her bag and stuffed it with an extra pair of clothes, and she began to walk out her back door and into the very dark and very creepy woods.
