Chapter Four

1857 Words
“Honey, wake up. We are almost there.” Esther quietly said while nudging Roxy awake.             “Huh? Oh, sorry, mom. I must have dozed off.”             “That is quite alright. I enjoy the quiet sometimes. You are going to love this place, Roxy. We have a lot of land to just ourselves with no surrounding neighbors for miles. I figured with what you now know. It would be good for us to have some privacy.”             “Cool.”             They rode together in silence for another fifteen minutes before pulling into the long dirt road that led to the home. It was a two-story home, much like their last home, but it seemed much bigger. It had a porch that wrapped halfway around the house. On the front porch sat a nice wooden swing and two wooden rocking chairs on the opposite side. The home had been taken well care of from the looks of it. In the front yard were a small pond and a tire that hung from the giant oak tree directly in front of the home. Roxy had not realized her mom had already parked the truck and was now standing on the porch waving for her to follow.             As they both stepped inside, Roxy’s mouth nearly dropped to the floor. It was massive compared to their old home. Everything seemed untouched. They both enjoyed the fact that it was not a contemporary-styled home. It had the feel of old southern charm in it that made them both feel like this was home. Roxy followed her mom into the kitchen and took in its beauty. It had all the original wooden cabinets along with the original wood stove.             “Let me show you your room.” Roxy followed her mom up the dark wooden grand staircase. As her mom reached the top of the stairs, she took a right down the hallway to the last door on the right.             Esther motioned for her daughter to step inside, and as she did, she was speechless. She had a beautiful view from the window in her room that showcased the horizon perfectly. The room was so much bigger than her bedroom before. She could have fit two of her old rooms into this one.             “Mom, this is awesome!”             “I knew you would love this place. I know it does not look like much right now, but this place will really begin to shine once the new furniture comes. Speaking of, the furniture will be delivered tomorrow afternoon. So, for tonight we will have to sleep on the floor.”             “What about the furniture we brought?”             “Roxy, I left all that stuff in the old house. We are getting everything new. This is a new beginning for us, and we both deserve to have some nice things for once. While the movers are here, I would prefer if you headed off into town for a bit to get familiar with your new surroundings.”             “Sure, sounds great.”             Soon Esther was making a pallet in the floor for them to sleep on, and before long, they were both drifting off to sleep.             Roosters began to crow loudly outside. Roxy woke up suddenly, trying to drown out the sounds by covering her ears with her pillow. “This is so not how I pictured waking up today.” She flipped over on her side, noticing her mom was no longer lying beside her. Still half asleep, Roxy slowly stood up, rubbing her eyes until they somewhat adjusted. The smell of coffee filled her nostrils as she made her way into the kitchen. Her mom stood beside the coffee maker, filling her cup with freshly brewed coffee. Without saying anything, she stomped over, grabbed the mug her mom had left out for her, and began filling her glass. After just a few sips, her body started becoming more awake and alert.             “Better?” Esther asked.             “Much. Thank you.”             “I have already been unloading some of our things. Your clothes are up in your room if you would like to go and change.”             After Roxy had changed, brushed her teeth, and combed through her messy hair, she was ready to head into town.             “Take the car, honey,” Esther said as she tossed her the car keys.             Roxy was nearing town after what seemed like forever. It was nice that they had their privacy, but she already hated the long drive that it took to get into town. Small shops started coming into view, so Roxy parked the car close to the first building she had come upon.             As she looked around, taking everything in, her eyes locked onto a small building that she immediately recognized as a flower shop. Roxy stepped across the street and opened the door to the small shop. She listened as the small bell that hung above the door dinged softly.             Roxy made her way down each aisle, taking in all the different types of flowers they had to offer. Her favorite was red and pink gerberas. As she went in search of the flowers she was hoping to find, she was not paying any attention and ran right into someone.             “Excuse me, I am so sorry. I was not paying attention to where I was going.” She bent down to pick up the flowers that had fallen out of the stranger’s hand. She stood, handing them back to the stranger without even looking.             “It is no problem at all.” He had a silvery voice that caught her attention.             She finally decided to look up to see the man she was talking to. He looked to be somewhat close to her age. His face was soft and soothing almost. His eyes had a grey tone to them that seemed exceedingly rare, and his blonde hair reminded her of Brooke for a moment. He has a strikingly muscular build that peeked through the tight white shirt he was wearing.             “My name is Brent.”             “Roxy. Nice to meet you," she responded while tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.             “Are you new to town? I haven’t seen you around here before.”             “Just moved in today. We moved in the house off Peak Dr.”             “Oh yeah. That is a nice place. I live not too far from there.”             Roxy repeatedly nodded her head. “Well, it was nice to meet you, but I should probably go.”             As she began to walk past him, a strong smell imploded all around him. Brent grabbed her by the arm before dragging her into a private corner away from the other customers. “Who are you? What pack do you belong to?”             “What?” Roxy was confused. How could he possibly know that she was a wolf?             “Do not play games with me. It is my job as the hunter of my pack to protect it from any outsiders.”             “Would you relax and let go of my arm?” He did as she asked but never moved his eyes from her. “I do not belong to a pack. I have only recently found out that I am a wolf.”             Brent began to laugh at her. “That is not even possible. If you are a wolf, it means your mother or father, or both were wolves. Then that would mean they were in a pack. The pack teaches pups about their wolf’s sides at a young age.”             “Not that it is any of your business, but my mom and dad left their pack and shortly after had me. They kept this part about me a secret, so I only recently found out. So, you can chill out. I can assure you I am no threat, and I am not here to cause anyone any harm.”             Brent eyed her suspiciously. “Let me talk to your wolf.”             “No!”             “What is your wolf’s name? Your wolf can vouch for you, but I need to hear it from your wolf.”             Roxy closed her eyes, allowing Rain control briefly. “Yes, what she has told you is true. She recently turned seventeen, and that is when I was able to connect with her, letting her know of her wolf side. Her mother explained the rest.”             “I see. What are your intentions here?”             “Her mother was offered a job, nothing more. We will not be in your way or in the way of your pack.”             Brent nodded as Rain turned control back over to Roxy.             “I will need to inform my alpha of a new wolf in town but will explain your situation to him. We are a tight-knit pack, and you never can be too careful.”             Roxy was curious. “What is the name of your pack?”             “We are called the Black Shadow Pack, but do not ever tell my alpha that I told you that. He does not do well with strangers in his territory. Just keep to yourself, and you should be fine.”             Roxy was still so curious. She wanted to know more, but she thought it best if she left it alone. The last thing she wanted to do was have a pack breathing down her neck, causing problems for her. It was bad enough that she did not know a thing about being a wolf, but now she had to worry about some mysterious pack that may or may not come after her. **             Brent walked into his pack house just on the outskirts of the town. He was there to inform his alpha of the new wolf in town. After all, it was his duty to report these things. Brent walked upstairs, making his way to his alpha’s office. He lightly knocked on the door waiting for the okay from his alpha that it was okay to enter.             “Come in.”             “Alpha, I am here to report a new wolf in town.”             “From any packs that we know of?”             “No. She is not from a pack.”       “So, she is a lone wolf. Kicked out from her previous pack, or she left freely?”             “Neither, sir. She never belonged to a pack. I spoke with her and her wolf, and they claim that she just found out about her wolf form.”             “Um…” The alpha considered what his hunter had just said. “That is exceedingly rare. I have only heard about it one other time in my life. Keep an eye on her and gather as much intel on her and her family as you can, then report back to me. Not a word of this to the rest of the pack until we know more.”             “Yes, sir.” Brent exited quickly, leaving the alpha alone to absorb the information he had just received about a possible new threat to his pack.
