15. Help me!

Her hands tightened on the piece of paper she was holding to her chest like it was her own heart, and she was afraid to lose it. "You!" She said; her eyes were sending daggers toward me. "It is only your fault!" I open my mouth to protest. But I was too confused at how she got there in that small room behind the wall, unable to see an entrance or stunned by how fierce and beautiful she looked. In a blink of an eye, she disappeared, leaving me frozen in the same spot for another few minutes before a voice calling my name brought me back to reality. “Alpha Levi! Are you all right? I called you a couple of times, but you seemed to be somewhere else.” Matias said, walking towards me. “Heck! That is a great punch you got there!” He added, looking at the hole in the wall. I turned at him with a murderous look, pissed off by how cool and happy he was. “You should keep going, Matias! It is not a good time!” I said and stepped past him. “Oh! The big Alpha is in a bad mood, uh? It seems that he doesn’t get enough attention from Luna!” He said, chuckling. “I said that is not a good time!” My voice boomed while my feet stopped working and my fist clenched. “Ok, ok. Calm down. I am not here to get on your nerves. At least not today.” He said, putting his arm in the air. “Then why are you still here?!” “I’ve… uh… I thought that you may need someone to talk to?” He said, sounding more awkward than he probably wanted to. “I don’t!” I said and started walking again. “Look, Levi. I am not your enemy here. The enemy is out there somewhere. I overheard your discussion with Luna Ella, and I get it. You are right; it is not fair to be left out like this now that you are practically part of this Pack. You need to know what we are dealing with here. Maybe then you will stop questioning us or, better said, doubting us. We are not the bad guys, Levi.” He said, walking behind me. I stopped in front of my door and sighed. “I found it fair for your precious Luna to enlighten me, but she doesn’t look like she will do that soon. So, please, enlighten me!” I said sarcastically. “Maybe we should go for a run.” He said with a smile on his face. “I can’t shift,” I growl in annoyance. “Oh, right. Then we should walk.” Matias replied and gestured for me to follow him. I noticed him keep looking right and left like he was hiding from someone. “Is there something you want to tell me?” I asked when he stopped at a corner and carefully ensured the hall was empty. “Not now.” He whispered. “We need to get out of here first.” He said, and I could sense a drop of worry in his voice. ‘Why was the Beta of the Pack so afraid of, to hide like a thief in his own Pack House?’ I thought. I kept following Matias till we stopped in a clearing near the border. “Ok. So now, can you tell me why the hell did you drag me all the way here and sneaked like a burglar?” I asked him, crossing my arms over my chest. “I needed to talk with you. You are the only person that can help me.” He said with eyes full of panic. What the hell was happening here? Was this one of Ellaire’s illusions? “Help you? But why would you need my help? You are the Beta of this Pack, and I can tell you are on excellent terms with your Alpha and Luna. The moment I mentioned the leaders of his Pack, I noticed his body become tense, tense with panic. “Look, Levi. We didn’t have a good start, but it wasn’t like I wanted that. I had orders to capture you, and that was all I did. You would have done the same.” “Capture me? Do you think that that is all about?” I said, chuckling. “Well… I enjoyed treating you like that. You know, my ego got over my head when I managed to bring you here - The Black Hunter. It felt great to be able to overpower some legend like you.” He said, with a proud smirk and puffy chest. “Overpower me?!” My laughter filled the clearing, scaring all the birds nearby. “Ok, Ok. Calm down, and they will know we are here if you keep making so many noises. “Who are they? Why are we here, Matias?” I asked, in a stern voice, my hands falling down my sides with clenched fists. “I need you to help me free her.” He said in a low and pleading voice. “What? Who is her?” I asked him, my body relaxing as I realised there was no trap or anything of this kind. I could sense his honesty and worry. I could feel his love and pain. “My Mate!” He added quickly, with pain visible in his voice. My eyes widened in even more confusion. ‘Why is he asking me to help him with freeing his Mate? Why me? And where is his Mate?” All my questions were being answered when Matias put his hand in his pocket and took something sparkling out. I could say that whatever he was holding was very special to him, from the way his fist was clenched over it. When he first opened it, and I saw the black sparkly bracelet with a green stone in a moon shape, I understood precisely why he needed my help. I stood there for a few moments, waiting for the fog to rise and the reality to be revealed. But it never did. “Is this a joke?” I said, realising that he had known Lira for longer than I did, yet he didn’t do anything till now. “What?! No! I would never joke about something like this! I swear!” He said in a harsh voice. “Then why now? And why not speak with your Luna?” “I can’t! She hates Lira deeply! You have no idea. She won’t let her go just because she is my Mate. On the contrary, she will take advantage of this and make her suffer more, using our bond. I would have taken her out of here long ago if I knew earlier that she was my Mate. But I only found out today. When I took her to the dungeons, something happened. I could feel the bond like it was always there.” I eyed him suspiciously for a moment without saying anything. “Please, Levi! I will tell you everything I know about the barrier and what your Mate tries to keep out.”
